Townsville Villains Aiming for a Second Appearance!

Townsville local growth and enthusiasm in Townsville is finally starting to take hold and we currently have a very keen group of people who play and party together and enjoy the game. As we discovered at the recent regionals competition we had plenty of people keen to make the trip to play.

Competitions that are coming up in the nearish future are Halibut at the end of July, Brisbane's mixed tournament, which usually has a large number of teams competing, and of course the potential for a Mixed Nationals team following in October. This is just a heads up on what we have coming up as a Townsville group.

It will be possible this year to send a team to Halibut and the time to start getting that together will be soon. An extra day of Ultimate a week to add to Wednesday night league, and Sunday King and Queen, a team based training is on the cards for very soon in process by Simon, to start getting some team orientated foundations. We're looking pretty good. For that added bit of fitness fun, only partly related to frisbee, Stine is kindly running a friendly soccer match currently on a Friday arvo at the uni AFL fields, but is likely to be booted out of this timeslot by the extra day of Ultimate soon. It's actually an OK sport except for the stupid handball rule, so no mid-air grabs.

Week 2 Results!

Week 2
Blue Sharks 6 – Motherhuckers 13
Hard Force 13 – Yellow Duncans 11
Heavyweights 11 – Pink BAMFs 13

This league is shaping up to be one of the most competitive ones we’ve seen with a lot of zones already being played against these fledgling teams and some very close games. I can speak for most people when I say that the wind tonight brought about some tough conditions to play in for most people, making catching and throwing a lot more difficult.

The Heavyweights’ game against Pink BAMFs really was a heavyweight matchup against some badass motherfuckers. Hard zone from both teams created a lot of turnovers and some long exhausting points. The scramble for the disc and the lead in these conditions created a lot of knocks and bumps this game. Handler extraordinaire Ashley deciding to get taken out of the play for a trip to the nearby hospital whinging about genital herpes or something. He may now get extra time on his assignments. Teammates Tim and Troy went head to head painfully enough as well, while I ingratefully knocked Bobby over to get at the disc. My bad, sorry Bobby. Great performances by both teams, but let’s try to be careful now!

Hard Force against the Duncans was mostly a man D and O affair with the Duncans taking the lead towards the end. Apparently the Duncans played some successful zone but opted against it for the majority of the match. A massive comeback from Hard Force saw them score 7 points straight with the Yellow Duncans sitting on 11 points to take the final lead and win the game.

The Motherhuckers are taking down teams in style with massive score deficits from the opposing teams so far. This week’s victim was the Blue Sharks who last week beat the Heavyweights in a close game. Two words for you: James David. With so many teams closely matched at this stage is it possible that Motherhuckers could reign supreme and be the dominant force this semester? Watch out for Micky L!

Week 1

These are the results from the first week of League, Semester 1, 2010

Week 1:

Blue Sharks 13 – Heavyweights 9

Hard Force 13 – Pink BAMFs 11

Motherhuckers 13 - Yellow Duncans 4

Remember, the first team to have all their members pay will play host to the greatest pizza party ever! My team, Heavyweights, we're still in the lead but have a few of the newest additions left to pay. See if you can get a loan for some of them.

Semester 1, 2010 League has begun!

After numerous rain delays it seems this season's beginner's league is underway. Looking more like a who's still around from Townsville it's really great to have such a huge number of people returning for this new semester. Of course there's still plenty of fresh faces around who this year will have plenty of help to go to from any of the returning players. So people do your best to help out!

The teams have formed and the first game has been played but as of yet I don't know who won. Sorry. Will get onto that soon. That's all I was gonna say.

Villains' first Regionals 2010!

A dear hello to everyone, it has been a while.

The TownsVillains headed down to Brisbane on the weekend for this year's Northern Regionals. After a slow start finding the numbers to play on the team, things just came together for us and we ended up with a strong 13 player side. The team was:

Simon Urquhart, Keith Cameron-Smith, Hugh Osborn, Mike Larson, Matt DeWitt, Vinko Grgic, Mat Ryan, Dave Dehollander, Chris Ende, James David, Dane West, Ryan, and Dave.

The results are approximately as follows:
Saturday - conditions - windy, usually sort of crosswind
Round 1 - Villains 15 def. Brisbane Beer Barbarians 1
Mike Larson wasn't able to throw a bad throw this game, with some casual slow sailing flicks just hitting their open target in the endzone every single time. Brisbane Beer Barbarians get to lay claim to being the first team to ever score against the Villains, something they should remain proud of and perhaps have displayed somewhere in their pool room...

Round 2 - Firestorm 10 def. Villains 7
Firestorm were off to a good start this game taking it out to 4 - 0. Some smart play by Townsville allowed us to match them fairly well and claw back at their lead. Their set structures once countered with some thought of our own gave us more than a few easier points against this well-trained team. It became quite a matchup towards the end but they always held onto their momentum and kept their lead for the win with a points cap. It was an exciting match for Townsville and the one most of us had been looking forward to having. Thanks Firestorm!

Round 3 - Villains 14 def. UQ Lovers 4
One of the points of this game stretched into miles and miles of Huck City. Reece Stewart on UQ showed he was a good leader for their team and actually made this one of the harder fought games for us despite the odds against them and the scoreline.

Sunday - wet morning, some rainy points, some points with a wind.
Round 4 - Villains 11 def. Slamtown Flatball Club (Gold Coast) 10
Both teams had to get up early this morning to face off, with the only party bye strangely enough going to the team least likely to party, Firestorm. With both of our teams knowing we'd be playing again in the semis against each other, and the effects of a late night plaguing our brains, it was hard to find the momentum to push ourselves past a meagre 75% effort level. The Villains made a strong break away to try to end the game but Slamtown fought back to bring it to universe point at the end.

Semi-finals - Slamtown Flatball Club 12 def. Villains 8 or 9
Slamtown found their 100% and the Villains seemed to lose this one for themselves by just not clicking and not thinking as well as we had been on other days. A good game but a sad one for us.

Finals Firestorm 15 def. Slamtown 4

Good luck at Nationals to Firestorm.

We had a really great weekend with a really great Townsville side this weekend. We played some exceptional Ultimate. Congrats to Dane and James for their first tournament weekend they both had some outstanding games and were amazing to have on the team. Special shoutout to Micky L, Mike Larson who did well in the MVP votes and played superbly throughout the tournament as well as doing a great job leading the team. Also to the rest of the Villains who looked pretty fine in their brand new team get-up.

TOWNSVILLE NEWS

TOWNSVILLE ULTIMATE NEWS

Well, it's good to be back and I can't wait to see what's been going on since I left.

Start of the new league looking good
Well done to Simon and everyone else for an apparently very successful first night of the beginner's league. I hear that we got a visit from Matt Boevink to run everyone through the best way to teach new people to throw and I'm sure that was really helpful for this first night. I'm told there was a large turnout and we may go for a larger league this semester. This Wednesday at 7pm at the Uni AFL fields is the 2nd of the introductory nights and we'd love to see all the same faces plus many more!

Pick-up King and Queen style
In other news the weekend king and queen style pick up has been going well throughout the holidays. I hear that the tradition is becoming established of the swim down at the Strand after the game, on a weekend I believe this is a fine combination. This Saturday Zane cemented his lead as King even further by turning up in the pooring rain, commitment I'd expect of everyone. He was one of a 6 person strong contingent who were there. I'm not sure who's leading the Queen comp., Stine perhaps? It's coming up to the final weeks of the holiday rotation before we start a new one for the semester. It's also likely to be double points for the last day, so if you're close to beating The Quinn then make sure you're there for all of them, check the Villains facebook group for more details. It should be a Sunday 4:30 start at Queens Park, bring a light and a dark shirt.

Ambitions of permanent Pick-up turn Intermediate league
I'd love to see a league developing out of our regular pick-up days once it becomes further cemented and numbers increase. This will depend on us recruiting a lot more local people to play who will be able to stay around for longer, increase their skills and swell our ranks of players. The location of Queens Park I think is one of the keys. This is a visible location in the city area, a social part of town where local people head for coffees and lunch etc. Hopefully this will lead to us getting exposure outside the dimly lit closet of the university fields of a nighttime and having the community of Townsville take note!

More ambitions - of a swell Townsville tournament where beer flows daily and all weekend and is local and fresh!
My eyes have been opened as to how a not-so-crucial-to-win frisbee tournament should look, the Kaimana Klassik in Waimanalo, Hawai'i, or even the Hilo Hat Draw the week after! I don't think I can go back to a tournament without beer on tap for the whole duration, without camping nearby, without live music and without a whole lot of things. The most achievable and important of these I think is beer. Sure I don't think I'd want to see this at every tournament but for the ones that people go to for the party, it should definitely contain beer on tap all day. Obviously the trouble Australia has is horribly expensive alcohol and that's why I think the next thing on the agenda after this is rallying the government to remove a large amount of the alcohol tax, but first things first. I'm pooling my ideas for something similar in the humble city of The Ville, we have the wonderful island of Maggie at our disposal for it and a local brewery or the Brew-By-U to help lower the costs of the booze. If cost is still an issue due to alcohol tax and expensive local brews I guess goon on tap all day would be the last resort - it doesn't have the same ring! For a tournament like this we'd have to prove ourselves locally so this might need some time. Obviously this is just in the ideas stage but even if it drives Badman for his Birthday Bash to set up something similar for this year I think my job is done. We all know that's the best tournament in Queensland at the moment and is the only one in that niche, but I'd like to invite you to "Maggie Magic" for a few years down the track.

Regionals 13th - 14th of March
The next most exciting news for Townsville is Regionals in 2 weeks. This is Townsville's biggest realistic chance of representing themselves for this half of the year (unless our players somehow find money and we make it to Nationals). We've got brand new team jerseys on the way, we've got new shorts coming even! Whoa! As well as that a new disc design is completed and discs should be around the corner too! Our team list is as follows so far, if you're coming sign up on AFDA.com! If you need more money (everyone) fill one of these out and bring it along to Wednesday or Pick-up and we can submit it as a group. http://www.townsville.qld.gov.au/services/departments/cip/grants/sport-rec

Matt Anscomb - does he really want to drift away into Ultimate oblivion and be remembered by this photo only?

Most of you probably don't know Matt Anscomb, but he is a fine Townsville fellow who a while ago retired from Ultimate and who since then I have been carefully trying to coax back in to playing. He is old, that is why we want him back. He has years behind him and some knowledge. That is what makes this photo fun to look at. Go to the Brisbane Blog and click on the label Townsville and what you will find is Matt A making the 2000's seem like a very long time ago. He is sporting some embarrassing-looking tiny footy pants. Very unultimate of you Mr. Anscomb. Will he stop being so whipped and return to the field? Does he want this to be the way his Ultimate Glory is remembered? Or should it be the way he partied at Kaimana or trained hard for everything? Will he ever face these questions? Only time will tell...only time will tell.

Brisbane finds out about Townsville Blog

JdR has discovered us. The secret ramblings of Townsville's Ultimate Blog which is sometimes about ultimate is now uncovered to the entire Brisbane community and those connected to it. Scary. Anyone interested in adding a few thoughts to it should get in touch with me. Any Audrey Siples out there should also start typing, the eyes of the world are now on you. For some reason they also think that the blog is written by some Hugh character? Not so, my dear Brissie friends, not so...it is actually written by.....TOMSTEVE!

Ok not really. But that would be fun I think. Perhaps I will recruit him.

Ultimate Frisbee in Townsville

If you're interested in playing this Ultimate Frisbee in Townsville then we are looking for YOU! While it is the university holidays we are currently playing twice a week with one afternoon being team training. We meet at 5pm on a Sunday afternoon at Queens Park for a casual game. We also train and play on Wednesday at 5:30 at the Ignatius Park fields.

Join the facebook group Townsville Villains - Ultimate Frisbee Group if you want to receive messages about times we're playing. Request to join the group and leave a message saying you'd like to start playing. Or even better get in contact with Simon Urquhart, simonurquhart2 at gmail dot com to talk directly to someone organising the current games.

Once Uni begins we will also be running our beginner's league. This may be the right way for you to begin playing if you have never played before as we will teach you all about the game from scratch along with plenty of other people new to the game. This league is a lot of fun and you will get to meet a lot of people. Keep checking back for the exact time and date.

Hmmm, what a surprise! Holiday laziness!

Hahaha, aaaaaah. Well I'm thinking, am I allowed to just fill this blog with ultiporn or will someone come along to make me pull all this ultismut off the internet! "Yes, you heard me boy ultismut! I know what you were doin' in your room! And if I catch you looking at that filth again boy, you're gonna meet with some serious punishment! Now get to bed before I have to tell your mother what happened here!!!"

Anyway, I have to laugh because a: the last thing I put up is ultiporn and now this and b: because somehow I missed something the first time which is replayed at the end. There's a few nicely placed large hucks and hammers of pretty decent skill level in there so they make for good ultiporn - makes you fantasise a little bit, that's always key. I might need to change the name of the blog soon to xxxultiporn.com.au. Now I'm probably at risk of having those people come along to shut my shady operation down. Anyway, what a surprise, some more ultiporn from Mr. Lazy here, can't be bothered going to play real Ultimate himself and get some real action.

Holiday inspiration

It's obvious. I am an ulti-porn addict. But seriously watch this highlight video (click link or search youtube for 2007 upa club nationals remixed) I just came across and tell me you lazy Townsville person currently on holidays barely playing any kind of sport that it doesn't make you itch and want to get out and play spectacular amazing ultimate (is that too many adjectives perhaps? nope! cause the last one's a noun). Apart from some real cockiness in the video from a few seppo wankers, most of it appeals to my ultiporn tastes. And now I have to go to bed thinking excited thoughts about getting back out and playing. Sleep will not happen easily tonight.

Audrey Siple - American Correspondent

Introducing to you Audrey Siple, American Correspondent. Over the past few months I have roped Audrey in to write a little for the Townsville Ultimate Blog! I haven't yet seen anything produced but I can guarantee that is what the new year will bring.

Audrey was here in the second semester of 2008 along with close friend Christy "Balls" Johnston from the land of America. She is an American. Both these girls are what I would consider to have been some of the finest already-established female players we've had land on these Townsville shores. I mention Christy because it is likely that any article written by Audrey will be done under the influence of alcohol in the company of Balls. These girls played on Townsville's 2008 entry into Mixed Nationals Hand of God (HoG for short) and were a key part. She is also tied to Hamish Pope, former Townsville Ultimate President and local player for 4 years. He is currently staying with her in America, so expect these three to have their way with the blog.

Audrey is one of the best female players I've ever actually seen play. On a basic level I used her as a scrap collector, collecting many of my errant throws in those days on the red team with Simon...(name eludes me at the moment but one fine looking team), and many of the scars on her arms and legs can be attributed indirectly to me. Apart from the layout catches, she is a great middle player in the stack, always a workhorse, the first person to cut, and who some people look to when in trouble. She even taught me how to throw a high release poppy backhand in the days when I thought throwing was for chumps. I've also seen her sky some of the guys in Townsville (not cool), as well as outrun and catch over some of the male players of the Townsville league (poor bastards). Either we have too many chumps here (quite possible) or she's a strong player (equally plausible). The most important thing I learnt from watching her play though was just the timing on the cuts, never stopping and that having rapport with a player (Balls) can be a huge advantage.

Apart from the obvious skills at the game Audrey is probably one of the most absurd people I've had the pleasure of meeting, so hurry up and write something damnit! The first 2 or more conversations I had with her took place with both of us pretending to be someone else, the first one was a character who did not speak english using only the words "noo" and "si". I took me three conversations to realise that she was to be avoided. At one time when I was quite a mess she had me convinced that Hamish had gone missing and I apparently proceeded to search the house high and low in the hope of finding the poor boy, including under the kitchen sink. Luckily he was found to be safe. Not to mention the much acclaimed welcome/farewell dance that took place with her, Christy and myself.

I look forward to her articles on Hot Girls of Ultimate and one about Fancy Dress in Ultimate or anything else that might be on her mind, even if it is actually about playing ultimate such as Playing Ultimate in America.

Cheers Audrey,
The great thing is you can write whatever you want cause there's only about 3 people that read this! New part: And if you don't write anything I will hate you forever and recruit Balls instead cause she's better at Ultimate and parties anyway!
Hugh

Meet the Villains

Hey Villains,

Yes that's right you are a Villain! Townsville's Ultimate teams have now had a change of name from Townsville Thor to the Townsville Villains, or The Villains! The men's team has been known as Thor for the past few years but it was resolved, as sad as I am at it's passing (Thor for Life!), that we needed to stamp a new brand on Townsville's teams and hold it strong! There's a plan in place to ensure we always represent our team in the team stripes and look and feel the part!

Kudos to Simon and Mike I think for coming up with the great new name!

REMEMBER VILLAINS: JCU Market Day in O' Week is on the 17th of FEB. We'll need your help recruiting then and before then, so keep an ear out and talk to everyone you meet about getting into Ultimate.

13 - 14th of March is Queensland Regionals down in Brisbane, go to AFDA.com and register to get your AFDA number for registering to Tournaments, insurance and to check out the dates of all competitions. START saving and looking at webjet.com for cheap flights there and back! Accommodation usually comes in the way of kind billets from Brisbane, so never fear, costs aren't too dear!

Much love from this guy:

Internet Interest: Ultimate Frisbee club loses season after nudity

You gotta feel for this American University team. Here's a quote:

Team co-captain Dusty Becker said Monday that while he was sorry, he didn’t see a problem with the team’s recent behaviors.

“Speeding, drinking, nudity they’re not bad things,” he told the executive committee. “They’re things a big portion of the community doesn’t think are wrong.”

He's right. We should send angry letters to the people who made the decision, telling them how angry we are. Someone find their address!

The New Year 2010!

Welcome to 2010! It is the New Year and it will be a good year for Townsville Ultimate, so Happy New Year!

Only a few weeks ago many of the folk who call Townsville home attended our first holiday game of Ultimate which was a success. It was so great to see everyone attend with such enthusiasm even in the light of hangovers from the Saturday night before, lack of fitness since the end of the season and even unsatiated hunger for the barbie after. It was nice to follow the game with a cosy barbie back at our 2 President's, Si and Mike, before we broke up for Christmas!

Preceeding the game people involved or beginning involvement with the committee attended a quick meeting summarising the look of our next year. It was good to see some new faces particularly Sam, Bobby, and Finny.

The meeting was a success with many new things discussed some of the more exciting ideas being a demo game of Ultimate before a Fury match, possible press release of results into the paper, and my favourite, one that I've personally wanted to see for years but which was suggested by male stripper extraordinare, Bobby, a nude calendar of all our hottest frisbee players delivered with the quote "175 grams is all that stands between me and your wildest dream." The only issue being after we fill the first few months with pictures of Bobby, what to do with the rest of the year. Simon's solution was simple: "Kittens in bowls for the last 6 months". Now I really do hope this next semester brings some female calendar interest for everyone's sake.

Oh and a side note: Pretty girls of the past 5 years of Ultimate if you ever get to read this, you know who you are, don't make me name you (if Hamish ever made advances on you then you may or may not fit this description - sorry Auds you can cough it up). But seriously please send any photos suiting the above description involving a disc and themed or unthemed nudity that we could use in our Girls and Guy of Townsville Ultimate Charity Appeal Calendar to our email address on the sidebar or to my own. They will be greatly appreciated. Anyone who is interested also feel free to drop us a line.

All the best for the New Year,
Hugh

The Semester 2, 2009, Finals

The League Finals, Semester 2 2009.

The Finals were played on Wednesday the 28th of October '09 in windy conditions between the Racist Dropbears and The Fraternal Order of Red. It was attended by a good sized crowd for the barbecue and to watch the game. Unfortunately the Dropbears were unable to pull it all together against Red and went down 13 to 3.
Well done to both teams for making it this far. Congrats to The Fraternal Order of Red for their success this season and for winning the Townsville Ultimate League Semester 2, '09.

From the top: Beers with Bobby & Finny, Steve throws a flick past his marker Ian, Matt Esser & Katie "Eugoogley" Gilluly manning the barbie, the sideline crowd.

Thanks for another great Semester of Ultimate Frisbee! Looking forward to the next one.
Over and out.

What is your Ultimate Desire?

A foray into UltiPorn.

Do you watch Ultimate Porn? If so what takes your fancy?

Ultimate Porn or Ultiporn for short: What is it and who is it for? Well, there are many different forms of Ultiporn, just as there are many forms of internet porn. Some of the forms might be particular fetishes like sex only using the feet or girls with fake breasts as opposed to real ones. Wait, sorry. Some of the forms that excite ultimate players might be media such as videos and pictures of elite level games where players have performed spectacular acts such as throws, dives, and catches, while alternative forms which please could be tightly detailed descriptions of a particular defense or an advanced throwing drill. Other people might even get theirs from seeing minutes of a club’s meetings, team lists from their upcoming tournaments, or emails from their team captain! Just as normal pornography excites and arouses the human desires, so too does ultiporn but to the extreme, this time it's the human's ultimate desires.

Sexxxy???

What types of ultiporn are there? How do you choose a favourite?

When the ultimate senses wish to be indulged and the option of a real game is not there, the potential for other methods of indulgence is realised. The closet pervert among us might prefer top quality pictures of events to pore over, hoping to spy a daring act such as someone laying out or a player getting skied by a big receiver. The text lovers might get it out by reading about their mate scoring on twitter, or perhaps get worked up over the release of the team list for the next national side. The devilish ones out there just can’t wait to get an email back about the funding being approved for a new video camera which they can’t wait to use. The experimental ones might get excited over finding a new website which has all sorts of plays they’d love to try out with their team when the time is right. It's not uncommon for young easily influenced kids even to prefer games such as fantasy ultimate over the real thing.

Of course, if you’re reading this or any other ultimate blog at the moment then you’re already indulging in ultiblog-porn. But rest assured, there’s no need to feel dirty, it’s all perfectly natural. Choosing a favourite type all comes down to experience and ultimate sexual preference.

With so many options how does a new person begin? What is the attraction?

Better than tits?

Obviously the most common mainstream form includes ultimate videos, particularly highlight reel videos (www.ultivillage.com). This is many people’s introduction to the world of Frisbee porn. Of the ultiporn video formats some of us prefer having a full game approach as opposed to those who may only prefer the quick sharp staccato rhythm of highlight reels. Of course people exist who will like watching both full games and highlight reels, and some people may not like any at all. So what is it that attracts some people but not all to even this basic form of ultiporn, because some people just do not get off on this at all? Is it their religious beliefs? Is it a moral or ethical code? Or do they just get enough Ulti Sex, real game-time experiences? These question remain to be asked more often and answered more thoroughly. My belief is that they’re a little bit gay.

For the rest of us anyway, those who don’t yet know where they fit in, we can pick and choose between the different types of ultiporn as we may desire. Some of us may be satisfied with only one or just a few forms. We can also expect that there will be people out there who indulge or have indulged at some time or another in all known forms of ultiporn. Some say change is as good as a holiday, and these people seek change and variety like a hamster seeks out the warm depths of the human colon, as we all too often hear about. Another thing we can be sure of is that there will be people who are shocked when they hear about what another person finds to be a normal and satisfying form of ultiporn!

Case Study #1: Jason DeRooy: Likes: basically all forms of ultiporn from writing emails, filling out blogs, to organising tournaments in his spare time and being executive of QUDA (Queensland Ultimate Disc Association). Lives for ultiporn.

Dislikes: Men in women’s clothing, idle chitchat.

Normal or unacceptable?

So these questions should be asked: What is normal and accepted and what is not? What we should remember is that when it comes to people’s tastes and preferences it will be different for everyone. Where should the line be drawn? For each person this will be different. Some people may draw the line early at the more conventional forms such as highlight reels. Others among us will just keep pushing the boundaries, poring feverishly over administrative details and organising events such as tournaments where their fetishes can be realised and real Ulti Sex can even take place. Every person should feel free to experiment with their Ultiporn desires and be encouraged to step things up to newer levels when a previously favourite experience becomes old.

Acceptance is the new excitement! Go out there and get some ultiporn into you!

Results of Semi Final Round, Semester 2, 2009

The Semifinals Commence!

The Semifinals commenced this week with some different than expected matchups. The Fraternal Order of Red played against 2nd/3rd placers Hammerheads due to confusion with the team rankings. The Hammerheads had to start off their game without team captain Matt Esser who was off fraternising with other sporting codes for the first hour. The arrival of this ultimate dynamo came too late however with a comeback bringing the final score to The Fraternal Order of Red 13 def. Hammerheads 6. Good luck to the team powerhouse Redcoats in the final.

A handblock from Katie "Eugoogley" Gilluly on Simon "Bob Fossil" Urquhart shook up the big zookeeper pretty good in the later stages of the game. However the dominant display by Simon's team of "Racist Dropbears" made sure to keep the not-so-white Pink Panthers from entering their Zoo...

Bob Fossil - great guy
Racist Dropbears 13 def. Pink Panthers 6 to move ahead to the finals.

The game everyone was looking forward to on this finals night was the wooden spoon game of The Last Surviving Dragons against the wooden spoon minor premiership team The Savages. The Last Surviving Dragons showed up late numbering only five or so minus their captain Matt De Witt who's still off living the dream (ie. not being in Townsville). Meanwhile The Savages surely shook them to the core with their full squad looking pretty intense during a number of warm-up drills. Alas the organisation was to end so soon with the fateful decision to hand over their two superstars 6 foot something-taller-than-most-people Adrian Sullivan and Cody "Quick Hands" Hall to provide numbers and apparently even up the game.

The Savages got off to a dominant start scoring a number of quick points and taking the lead which they held for most of the game. For many of the points the whole team was playing their part helping them to victory while the dragons looked decidedly pick-up-y. The Dragons got their scramble on and took things back with little Matty and southern ring-in Sara Cargill utelising their team and throwing lots of things including a few frisbees to Heather in the endzone for some goals.

Now realising there was a chance they could win a prize this year, albeit the wooden spoon, The Savages were torn apart to go down in history as one of the greatest frisbee teams ever!!! Steve Jamieson has now been on the wooden spoon team both semesters he's played in Townsville. Thank god he will be leaving Townsville in a week or 2, I'm sure this is the same reason he had to leave Adelaide. Good luck though Steve, maybe next time your luck slash frisbee skills will improve.
The Last Surviving Dragons 13 def The Savages 11 (Wooden Spoon winners Semester 2, 2009)

SCOREBOARD, WEEK 8, LAST OF REGULAR LEAGUE GAMES

Sunday, October 25, 2009

Crazy Nuts!

Look, it's getting tough figuring out scores and shit! But remember! Wednesday Night is the frickin' league final! We've got the Racist Dropbears squaring off against the Redcoats (The Fraternal Order of Red)! We're hoping this game will be a cracker and that you crackers are down there for the barbie, cheap piss, and the heckling. Mike's team will be the obvious underdogs coming into this game (NOooootttT!) and we Australians love to cheer for the underdog. So get your red shit together for this top match. Also remember to bring along some gear to play in as there's gonna be a second field set up for a pickup match on the side (a bit like having salad on the side with a steak - it's nowhere near as good as the steak, and mostly kind of pointless, but it still happens somehow).

Anyway see you all there kids. The results will eventually go up when I'm more sober.

Round 7 Results and Table

Here are the results from the first week back after the midsemester break.

Hammerheads 13 defeated The Last Surviving Dragons 4
The Fraternal Order of Red 13 defeated The Savages 4
Pink Panthers 13 defeated Racist Dropbears

Delays and Holidays

Sorry for the delays on the blog, I haven't been around to do any of the scores and whatnot. Tasmania however had some pretty sweet weather and some really weird looking people like you've never seen before. I will do my best to soon update it and I will probably need Kevin to tally the scores for me cause apparently they're wrong.

Anyhoo, finals begin this Wednesday with it being potentially the last game for many teams. But don't forget that it doesn't end there for you people. The week after will be the finals and a barbecue and it is everyone's job who won't be playing to make it down to the fields. Once there please refer to the acceptable "sport" of heckling and fantasy ultimate (one version of the rules on this page: http://www.mit.edu:8001/activities/ultimate/flu/flu.html) for some great ways to abuse or show love for the players on the winning teams.

Lots of love

Ultimate Frisbee: The Top Frisbee Sport!

According to a recent assumption Ultimate Frisbee is the top frisbee sport!

Image: http://www.toothpastefordinner.com/archives/2008/Sep/
That's frickin right! Stupid penultimate frisbee.

This is fantastic news for any Ultimate player who's had to put up with people laughing at them, girls disrespecting them, work colleagues feeling sorry for them or passerbys in cars yelling "frisbee is for gays!" loudly out their windows. Ha! Ha! Take that all you doubters! Who's having the last laugh/act of abuse/show of sympathy/yell now! Ultimate Frisbee is, that's who.

Frisbee Facts you should know!

For those of you who didn't know an ultimate frisbee frisbee holds: approximately 1630 ml of liquid. That equals approximately 4.34 beers. Or approximately 1.42 jugs of beer. Or 2.86 pints. Or 3.83 schooners. Or 5.71 pots of beer. That equals enough to get you messy if you have 3 or 4 of them.

Use this knowledge wisely. Tell your mates.

Just what are you gonna do now?
Option A: Throw Frisbee
Option B: Drink Beer
Option C: Paperbag girl and have your way
Option D: Pour beer into frisbee, drink beer from frisbee, throw beer, paperbag girl.
Vote now!

Round 6 Predictions and After Game Comments!

Until I get to add the actual results I thought I'd have a crack at predicting the winners for the next games and mention the idea of getting some after game comments happening.

PREDICTIONS
The Savages over The Last Surviving Dragons (please let this come true)
Hammerheads over Pink Panzies
Racist Dropbears over Redcoats (I'm making Mike's team the underdog so that people feel more inclined to cheer for them)

AFTER GAME COMMENTS
What the other point of this preemptive post was, was to give people an opportunity to post their comments on the teams, their opponents, teammates, and any great performances from people worth a mention, with the opportunity to begin immediately after the game. So let's try and make this particular comments section a bit more of a good wrap section. Begin from this post and we'll see how it works out. It'd be great to hear from individuals in the games. Thanks.

Results Table, Round 4, Semester 2, 2009.

So I'm not too good with computers so it isn't too pretty, but my maths skills are hopefully good enough for this to be the correct tally of Wins and Losses for each team.

Round 4 Results

The Last Surviving Dragons 13 defeated Racist Dropbears (white) 10
The Fraternal Order of Red 13 defeated Pink Panthers 9
Hammerheads 13 defeated The Savages 6

This week we have a special writeup from top dog Kevin Staples on his team's game against what we'll now call the Redcoats. Where did you find that shirt Mike? Here's Kevin:

Score 13-9 in favour of the enemy Redcoats (or whatever their name is).

This match was one of the grudge variety. Red was looking to avenge their tight loss from the week before, while we were trying to keep our winning momentum intact. Defense was the theme of the game, as there were a couple points that were more like marathons held within a square pitch. Even though Red sustained multiple injuries, they were able to fight through this and, buckling down at their own endzone multiple times, take advantage of our turnovers enough to pull out the W. The score is not a good indicator of the closeness of the match, so admitted both sides.

--Media's favourite disk handler,

Kevin

As Kevin points out defense is definitely becoming the deciding factor in these games. Our game against the Hammerheads read very similarly. It was a close and intense game and tough fought for the points we did get even though the score shows differently.

Most teams are now using a zone defense as a main defensive strategy and it is rewarding them with a lot of turnovers close to the endzone at this stage from rushed throws and over-eagerness. It is early days yet so hopefully soon the hard work on offense in these long zone points translates to more goals. Good to see!

Controversial Drunken Dancing Styles - The Handler - A moral obligation or too intense ninja?

We all know the common drunk dance moves on the dance floor such as The Egyptian, or The Sprinkler but who among us has dared use The Handler?

Of all the drunken dance moves I've rehearsed or pulled out in the past I'm sure most people will agree with me when I say that ripping out frisbee moves on the dance floor is a sure way to impress people with your dancing know-how. One of the great things about this dance is that actual throw execution doesn't play a part. You are The Handler, the greatest handler of them all. So you can sit there faking smooth short backhands and then switching and going for the no-look high-release inside-out forehand huck or how bout spreading those legs and throwing lower than you ever thought possible until regrettably you sack yourself, people are gonna be wowed no matter what!
Suddenly a world opens up...

But the moral obligation must come first: Is it fair to use ultimate frisbee moves on the dance floor? Or are they just too intense ninja for normal people?

Some people will argue against it saying you couldn't possibly still have the disc after more than 10 seconds of faking throws, how can you still be dancing?? But my counter to this is that you 'll only have 10 seconds if someone is counting. And who would want it to end, really?

Please be careful.
Please be very careful.

And here's a tip: use only one disc at a time unless you want it to look like only a training session instead of the real thing.

Rules of Ultimate

Below = Pretty Picture:

A Full Sized Playing Field

We have a short time to teach you the game of Ultimate each week so for those who need to/want to know more about the rules here's two links from the AFDA website. The first is just the rules. The second is a more compact version which might suit you better for printing to read in the toilet, while still saving you enough money to buy toilet paper later in the week had you printed the other one.

Round 3 League Results and Apologies to Kevin

Apologies to the diehard fans such as Kevin Staples and...oh wait that's it at the moment, but I managed to forget to put up scores from Wednesday night. This is quite a booboo because that's about all I have to write about and it's much more fitting when it's closer to a time when you can remember it and it still matters. I would normally try and come up with an excuse but I probably just forgot and maybe went drinking the following day and forgot even more. Sorry Kev, the rest of Townsville Ultimate and Ultimate players of the world, no hard feelings.

Without further ado for Mr Staples and the rest, here are the results from last week.

Pink Panthers 13 defeated
The Last Surviving Dragons 12
I'm told that the Dragons had a good lead early but failed to finish it off with a comeback from Pink Panthers stealing the win.

Racist Dropbears 13 defeated The Savages 7?
The Savages are still struggling to find some form early in this league, hopefully once things settle and they get used to playing savage they will get some wins. Some quick disc movement from the Droppies helped them to victory.

Hammerheads 13 defeated The Fraternal Order of Red 12
This showdown between these two stubborn teams went on well after the other two games. The crowd gathered on the sideline cheering on the underdog which was always gonna be the Hammerheads because Mike Larson happens to be captain of Fraternal. The result was some intense playing from everyone on the field and a strong fight back from the Hammerheads to get the win.
As Mike duly noted to his team at the start of the season, the crowd was never gonna be cheering for them in a tight game. I have personally experienced this phenomenon on many separate occasions playing against Mike last semester, however I always thought they cheered for me because I'm such a great guy. I will cheer for you next time Mike, unless we showdown again in this year's finals, then we'll be going for the jugular while looking underdoggy and forlorn so the crowd likes us more.

Successful Barbie! Plus Sausages versus BBQ flavoured Satay Sticks and what to call them!

Thursday, last week, saw what I think was the second club fundraising barbecue of the semester at the Uni Club. The Club's opening hours have now returned to the old closing time of 1am meaning a better, drunker, hungrier night for all.

Thanks again to Duncan for organising the barbie and manning the tongs all night. The addition of kebab sticks/satay sticks with BBQ flavour or whatever you want to call them was definitely an improvement on the thoughtlessness of only offering woolies sausages and tapped into the market of the "person who refuses to support the cause because we're only selling sausages". This is a niche which far too often remains untapped leading to an increase in the number of these people about. However, the strange part about it was that people actually complained when the sausages finally disappeared, so we won't be seeing the end of them anytime soon.

The best part of the night was enjoying the company of those who helped out and all our friends stopping by where they could rest their drink/s allowing the double fisters among us to free up a hand and have a chat. So thanks to everyone who came and helped we had a lot of people there making the night fun. I think Jared managed to keep us in business early on by eating 9 sausages and a kebab stick at last report. All our food ran out with pretty girls lining up for Matt Esser's skills at cooking the satay sticks, which is a great way to finish a barbie! The best thing about it for me was that it allowed me to come out and socialise but kept me tied down and away from the booze a little more. So well done to the barbie!

An intervention will be held next time for Dave Dehollander who drank 6 or so red bulls and became quite strange and spoke really really quickly by the end. This may just involve stealing his car keys and getting him drunk.
