Another Successful Season

A big thankyou to all the players, captains, volunteers & supporters who have stuck with the club through the rain, wind & cold of this wacky semester.

It's because of all of you that we have had such a great semester.

To all those heading back to your motherlands, you will be sorely missed but not forgotten & we hope you continue to spread the frisbee dream wherever you go.

To those here again next semester, have a nice break and we will see you all on the field soon.

Again, thankyou all for playing, it's been one of my favorite semesters yet!

Love Duncan & Hugh xxoo

Semi-Finals and Placings Week, Semester 1, 2011

The results of Final placings and Semi-Finals.

The Gods of frisbee thought they'd not only piss down on us this season, but they'd also start farting in our general direction as well, as for the first time this season teams faced some Townsville wind just in time for semis and placing games!

Games were back to full length with the two semi final matchups taking place on the more crosswind fields, while the other 3 games may have endured slightly more upwind points. Wind on the night would have separated the weak throwers from the strong and forced a change in tactic from many teams. The addition of alcohol to the system of many players in their final match also added that extra element to the games tonight.

5th/6th
Green Machine 13 d. Black Panthers 8

The placing game for 5th/6th took place with Green Machine matching up on the once fearsome Black Panthers. The Panthers were dominated at the start with Green getting off to a quick 8-0 buffer, and Captain Criegan was surely wondering how to come back from this embarrassment. But respond they did, soon fighting back to 11 - 4, and then finally making it 11 - 8 to Green. Green Machine took the win in the end 13 - 8.

7th/8th
Albino Rhinos 13 d. Tie-Dye Another Day 12

Playing off for 7th and 8th and not facing the wooden spoon is a new one this season and surely both the Tie-Dye Another Day and the Albino Rhinos are thankful for that. Thankful enough that Tie Dye decided to celebrate it a bit. The wind played havoc for both teams and probably the alcohol with the Tie Dyes too struggling along with half their team slightly intoxicated. Both these elements would have ensured long points would have featured. Chris Ende the Rhinos Captain choosing injury last week has meant he's missed the last game with his team, but luckily this should allow some off-season recovery time for him over the holidays. Fantastic game between Tie Dye and Rhinos. Rhinos played well and deserved the win in a game won 13 - 12 on universe point wtih scores having been locked at 9 all going one for one to the end.

THE WOODEN SPOON MATCH 9th/10th
White Savages 13 d. Disc Jockeys 4

History is not too kind. Sure it will remember the greatest wins, but it also remembers but the biggest losses. The result of this game is the story that will be remembered long after the final point is scored or the last can of beer drunk mid-game.

Despite the White Savages' drinking and unorthodox playing style, they came out on top of the Disc Jockeys, who seemed to have issues playing the wind. Both teams were looking to win and escape the notoriety of losing a season! Matty Hamilton unfortunately will have that monkey to get off his back next season as Tim and Damon and the rest of the team come free and get the win.

Semi Finals

Semi Final 1

Tytans 12 d. Lairy Canaries 10

Once again these two fast-paced teams matched up with a similar result and the Tytans just edging out the Lairy Canaries.

Tytans d. Lairies 12 - 10

Hyper-Masculine Feminists d 13 - Ginger Ninjas 4

13-4 to Red. They had a wide variety of people scoring on red team and playing against the zone in the wind proved to be too much for the ninjas. It was a very excellent game from everyone, though the score doesnt reflect the difficulty of the game.

Grand Final next week
Hyper-Masculine Feminists to vs. Tytans

3rd Placing
Lairy Canaries to vs. Ginger Ninjas

Finals Night Preview

The night has come at last, a night of fun, frivolity, fierce heckling and a finite fury for four teams to come out on top.

In one corner stands the stealthy Ginger Ninjas, sporting a mix of agility, speed and absolute danger with a disc, in the other corner, the Lairy Canaries; calm, collected and not lacking in height, ready to do battle to see who will come out on top of this 3rd/ 4th match up. The game is sure to be fast paced and electric as these two teams clash heads and discs in a battle to the end. Predictions could be made but would likely be wrong especially when Hugh brings his hucking magic and Ash his fight-from-behind fury to the field on this Wednesday night, either way this is going to be a game to watch.

But the ultimate (pun intended) battle taking place tonight is between two highly anticipated teams who truly have lead the field this season, without further ado;

In the red corner, standing at little under 6ft but not lacking in leadership or commitment departments stand the Hyper-Masculine Feminists.
The HMF have a lot to prove this final game of the season, they were a slow starter but have definitely claimed top two spot for most of the season. A team of social misfits, with long range runner and receivers like Ray "Pedo Mo" Brigade & Sean "Legs like Lightening" Beveridge, an eager group of boys and girls who don't care who they crush on their way to victory and their mid season addition and final season player Simon "Bottoms Up" Urquhart.
Expect smart plays from these guys as they go blow for blow, point for point with their cunning and eager to prove opponents.

In the tye dyed corner, sporting funky shirts, belligerent attitudes, cunning in disc play and feisty when it comes to their ultimate goal stand the ever present Tytans.
The Tytans have been a force to be reckoned with all season, punishing teams left, right and centre who over-compensate for their speed, smarts or massive jumps for that flying piece of plastic. Led by local socialite Dave "Party Animal" DeHollander, this group of energetic and eager animals are one step away from utter victory, sporting a excellent win/ loss record and supported by a pack like Carlos "Tooth Destroyer" Castro, Justin "Jumps" Bowers, the finesse of Sammy "Cut Throat" Jones and their motley crew, this team is going to be hard to outsmart this finals night. This is a team who don't like to lose and will be sure to push the HMF to their limits for every point of the night.

But as to who will be the winner of this Clash of the Titans, you will have to be there on Wednesday night, to see the action unfold!

Finals Week 1

Apologies for the late write-up, now we will do our best to swamp everyone with the week's worth of blog posts spread out over one day while ignoring uni for far too long before more finals games take place in less than 24 hours.

Game 1
Game 1 was much of a formality but what was not a formality was the serious chance of an upset from any team coming into this game. Alas that was not to happen and each game played out to the rankings coming into this round. The closest 2 ranked teams Lairy Canaries and Ginger Ninjas still ended up with the higher seed on top.

HMF 9 d. Disc Jockeys 5

Tytans 9 d. Tie-Dye Another Day 6

Black Panthers 10 d. White Savages 8

Green Machine 10 d. Albino Rhinos 4

Lairy Canaries 10 d. Ginger Ninjas 6

Game 2.

While HMF and Tytans relaxed on the central field, with some stubbie guts hiding their fear behind laughter and too afraid to face off before their foolishly "assumed" Grand Final appearances, the rest of us had games to take care of. Both BYE teams looked anxious and their players were behaving in ways that can best be described as "drunk" and "fearful", and they also smelt like homeless people.

Tie-Dye Another Day 9 d. White Savages 8
Tye-Dye brought it all out this game to move out of their low placing and gave it a serious crack. Looks like the White Savages weren't giving in either but their recent form may have just given them doubts in the tighter moments. Tie-Dye if given another semester to tighten the rubber bands they used to make their shirts could potentially give many more teams a run for their money and this late game is their way of saying that to the other teams. A close attempt by the White Savages, they're going to wish they won as they'll be facing an overexcited DJ's in their next game, the "other one" everyone remembers forever!

Albino Rhinos 8 d. Disc Jockeys 5The closer rankings of these two teams was sure to produce a slightly more satisfying result for the Disc Jockeys, but it looks as though the Rhinos showed their true calibre, perhaps a little late. This game was targetted as being a good chance at the Disc Jockeys' first win of the season (correction: they beat Finny's team so cannot be pantsed) and from what I hear it was nice to play in a tight match up. Alas, it was not to happen. They should return this week for their final chance at not being pantsed this season being awesome. I'd advise it cause that oval is looking mighty big!

Lairy Canaries 10 d. Green Machine 4
The Green Machine was looking a bit dusty tonight, long in need of a waxing, while their opposition in this Quarter Final, The Canaries seemed chirpy. Green Machine had some good offensive moments threatening with some flicks off the Dunc and some well timed shots from Geoff Couper to the girls deep. A change in force from the Canaries, began shutting off the Dunc's flick option and then the female Canaries went on some full field runs taking it up the field singlehandedly. Sally was threatening from the Green Machine with some long cuts, but not every option paid off.

Ginger Ninjas 8 d. Black Panthers 4
Semi final two of the night saw the daunty Black Panthers take on the Ninjas. The Panthers have been one of the least favoured to play against teams this semester with good reason. They must have forgotten to tell the Ninjas this as all they could think of was getting through to the Semis. Even the Panthers facepaint wasn't working. The last game running of the night which managed to gather it quite a crowd. We saw the longest point in history with both teams getting excited like a teenage boy alone in a bed with a pretty girl and things just not going to plan. Many many questionable options were taken and those questions were quickly answered with a "Yes, that was a terrible idea" but the point was nonetheless exciting. Brigi Palatino was everywhere on the field that point compiling a highlight reel of her own. Peter Roach unfortunately was the teenage boy of the Black Panthers letting the white disc fly all over the playing field! Let's just hope he can shake those nerves before the honeymoon not too far down the track!!! Best of luck Peter! A riotous upset by the Ginger Ninjas giving them a semi final berth they must have thought shattered only a game earlier.

This Wednesday History will remember those in the wooden spoon-off and those who missed out on the Grand Finals. Our hearts will remember the rest. Be merry and prepare to relax after the games! Bring along a drink or two to enjoy with your team after last game (not an official endorsement of drinking by this club)! Enjoy responsibly!

Shit yeah. Results yet to be posted but we all know the rough outcome. Fuck yeah. Getting excited.

3 Week Finals Format!

To give teams an idea of what is at stake, the entire finals structure is now on the BLOG! More details regarding each week's activities and the finer details will be posted as we progress through but for now have a look where you want to be!

Week 1 of Finals aka tomorrow aka THE NIGHT OF THE UNDERDOG will feature TWO Games which allows every team one last shot at playing in the Grand Final! First game top team plays lowest teams and so forth. Top 2 teams get through to finals and may elect to scrimmage in the second game timeslot of the night. The second game of the night for the remaining teams will then be the next 4 highest teams (rankings 3, 4, 5 and 6) competing for the 2 Semi Final spots with the two losing teams then ending up in the 5/6 Bracket. The lowest 4 teams compete to be placed in the 7/8 Bracket or the 9/10 Bracket. Exact positions for the Bracketed teams will be worked out in Week 2.

Week 2 of Finals aka LET'S WIN SOMETHING will be the Semi finals for the top 4 teams and the ranking games for the remaining 6 teams (5th through to 10th position up for grabs) and their last shot at GLORY! Who will win the wooden spoon? Who will get their team up through the ranks for a respectable position and some credibility to take home?

Week 3
of Finals will be the GRAND FINAL and the 3rd vs. 4th playoff for bragging rights. This night the final will be staggered to start slightly later so that everyone is free to spectate and heckle and drink beer. Some fun games will also take place before the final is expected to start. Be there, bring friends, bring drinks!

IF you're confused the simplest way to think about it is this:

Turn up every week and try to win! In the third week bring beer and goon and yell at people! Get amongst it!

With all the hard work done already in Excel it is much easier to plonk a picture of that up on the narrow columned blog! Sorry for this laziness, click to make it bigger!

Results - Final Round Robin games

The last night of Round Robin games before finals begin!

Game 1

Lairy Canaries 8 d. Disc Jockeys 4
Questions about the Disc Jockeys' struggles were answered this game when they came out with a strong offense and Matty looking unstoppable. Zone defense from both teams mixed things up to see some good performances with players stepping into new roles on the field with Jacqui of the Lairies looking extremely comfortable as a wing-handler! Both teams managed to breeze through the opposition's zones and overcame the learning hurdle which is often the main factor in a zone on the windless nights in Townsville.

Hyper-Masculine Feminists 8 d. Tytans 6
A fierce match-up for the last week of games, top ranked Tytans vs. second ranked HMF. HMF are finding some rhythm and may be difficult to stop in the lead up to the finals. Tytans were unfortunately knocked off their perch this time. In their first match-up who knows what the true ranking of these two teams really is. Both teams claim it was a two player team that they played against with the Simon-Mike show versing the Dave - Carlos spectacle. If they both make the Grand Final it'll be interesting to watch.

Green Machine
8 d. Albino Rhinos 6
A fierce effort by the Albino Rhinos against the steam-rolling Green Machine. The Green Machine seem to be having a good run of luck. Are they a finals contender or is it just that, luck? Will someone put a stop to them? This guy is willing to have a crack at the Green Machine and his Co-President.

Black Panthers 7 d. Tie Dye Another Day 4
Black Panthers have a gun line-up and are one of the most underrated teams in the top 4. This team, if they can organise the troops, are looking dangerous. Tie Dye's effort to get some points on the board is more likely an indication of what the Panthers didn't do rather than what the Tie Dye's did well. Matching the Black Panthers' deep line of players would have been hard with the undermanned Tie Dyes.

Ginger Ninjas 10 d. White Savages 1
This scoreline indicates A FLOGGING. White Savages looked extremely good on paper but must be languishing near the bottom of the ladder after this performance. The 2 of the best players from HMF and the Lairies went to strengthening this squad after the early pull-out by America Phone Home Bobby, who has gone on a world tour. Perhaps it is a lack of moral support doing them in, or perhaps just silly drops. Tim Roland, Mr. Injury and the official captain of the team stayed home to post youtube videos on facebook, this does not bode well for team morale. Ginger Ninjas are finding some excellent form at the right time and are a real danger of sneaking their way to a semi final berth.

Game 2

Black Panthers 10 d. Disc Jockeys 1
Once again, no mercy from the black pussy cats. They come out guns blazing and if you are caught off guard you've got a fat chance of coming back. Disc Jockeys unlucky enough to have to match them just when they seem to be working through some of the kinks. Whoever has this team next week I wish them luck.

Albino Rhinos 10 d. White Savages 5
Albino Rhinos get a convincing win here over the White Savages. Captain Chris Ende has toned back the flick hucks and was playing to strengths in this win learning the negative effect of a few turnovers as the main handler on the team. A timely lesson it seems.

Hyper Masculine Feminists 8 d. Ginger Ninjas 7
According to word of mouth this was another Simon-Mike show, what else does team HMF have on offer, or are other great performers being swept under the rug by jealous opposition? Who knows what devastation the Ray Brigade unleashed this game or the last with all this 2 man team talk! What about the girls? Mike's teams in the past have featured heavily on well-drilled female scorers and all round disc movement! Well they did play to their female strengths with a good ratio of female HMFers challenging the Ginger Ninjas to play a woman down and these girls presented many good offensive options. The Ginger Ninjas had some great mid field plays and worked the disc around well, with many of their girls outclassing Red on offense to get open. HMF were in front early and were up 8-3 but Gingers brought it back to 8 - 7 with one of these points an excellently weighted deep huck from Ash to Danny who raced Simon deep and beat him to score. Timecap was the real winner as the Gingers just ran out of time. By all accounts said to have been a great game!

Lairy Canaries 7 d. Tie Dye Another Day 5

A friendly match-up against two teams taking it easy for the night. Tie Dye Another Day struggled to get seven on the line at game start with many players nursing injuries. At an unspoken mutually agreed halftime by both exhausted teams after a long point, Tie Dyes were given the chance to nurse their injuries and both teams took to the field with 6 players, with Lairies dropping a guy to keep things fair and to give the Lairy guys the full game experience for once by having to sub. The Lairies had another shot at their 6-player, captainless win of the week before and displayed their natural flair for understanding a new sport, however this time around those few points were not a charm and the Tie Dyes caught up. The match-up of the night was definitely the Kellie (Lairies) - Amber (Tie Dyes) one with Amber just being the Tie Dyes scoring machine despite Kellie's flawless efforts on defense. After a few close points scored by soldering iron-hands Amber, Kellie shifted the momentum back to the Lairies with a good block or two and a memorable endzone catch.

Tytans 7 draw Green Machines 7
The Tytans would have entered this game demoralised after their loss to HMF, but assuredly this was not the only factor in the tight end score to this game. Green Machine as mentioned have been on a winning spree the last few weeks which we are yet to see the end of. Deanna Finn when committed to it is usually an unstoppable female component of the team and like her off-field personality this is easy to take advantage of (just joking Dee, GEEZ!). Green Machine also features the wiley Tom Felix of french origin. Being French does not seem to inhibit this speedster on the field and he is fast adapting to the game and would have been an easy target in the endzone. The Tytans dependence on Carlos and Dave for the big plays in the earlier games may be coming back to bite them with other teams now matching them on a team scale but this would just be speculation. A tight match-up from two good teams showing that the Grand Final is still up for grabs by any teams willing to give it a chance.

That is all I have time for for the post game "analysis" this week based on very little actual facts which were spread through 10 games of frisbee. Hope you enjoy.

Keep posted for the Finals Format being posted later today.

Leaderboard after Round Robin

So here is the leaderboard after the completion of the Round Robin all prettied up by Ashley - what a great quality of work, thanks Ash!

The best way to view it is to click to enlarge the picture!

Tuesday, May 3, 2011

So maybe it's a bit late.....

This week I decided to prioritise uni over Frisbee…...ridiculous I know! So I’ll get straight in to the results!

Game 1

Green Machine 9 d. Disc Jockeys 5

In what I was told a great game, the height lacking Disc Jockeys took on the overly tall Green Machine. With Captain Matt Hamilton feeling fantastic once again, the Disc Jockeys are no push over team. However, the height seemed to be the goods in this game with the Green Machine taking the win.

Tytans 10 d. Tye Dye Another Day 8

I thought that watching the White Savages against Tye Dye Another Day, this took confusing to a whole new level. In the battle of tie dye supremacy, the Tytans had a bit of an advantage being able to field a whole team…..however in a close game (with a score line that Finny assured me was ‘legit’), the Tytans took the win! Hopefully those Tye Dyes can live another day!

Lairy Canaries 10 d. Ginger Ninjas 4

With the Canaries already on the back foot without inspirational leader Hugh there to man the ship, the Canaries were in for a tough time against an in form Ninjas. However, the Canaries played to their strengths and with only 6 players managed to get a pretty comfortable win. Canaries had the game won after a mammoth point in the middle of the game went their way!

Hyper-Masculine Feminists 9 d. White Savages 5

The question of this game was whether handling king Owen could take down his former red teammates. With a strong showing needed by the HMF to keep their unbeaten record alive, the most unrecognizable superhero of the pub crawl Travis “Quail Man” Rivard put in a stellar performance to help his team take the glory.

Black Panthers 8 d. Albino Rhinos 4

This game, similar to what I’m sure happens in the wild, saw the Panthers take out the Albino Rhinos in the longest time capped game I have seen. With the Panthers sporting a very strong lineup, the Rhinos put up a tough fight to keep them to as many points as they did. Will be good to see these two teams face each other again in the finals!

Game 2

Tytans 10 d. Disc Jockeys 2

The Tytans, whose top of the table glory surely has to end sometime, again looked a team to fear in the finals with the win over the Disc Jockeys. With Carlos again starring for the Tytans, it’s hard to see where their winning streak will end! Disc Jockeys were simply outplayed by a very strong team.

Green Machine 10 d. Lairy Canaries 5

With the Canaries clearly exhausted after their mammoth effort against the Ginger Ninjas, the Green Machine looked to keep on rolling. And indeed they did, putting on a great showing to take down the Canaries. The Canaries can hold their heads high, and with the return of Hugh tomorrow night are sure to be dangerous!

Hyper-Masculine Feminists 10 d. Tye Dye Another Day 6

In another ‘Finny told me this was the score’ game, the HMF looked to keep their streak alive again. With captain Mike Larson spending most of this game off the field after a Timmy Roland run-in the previous game, the HMF played strongly and showed they can do it without their captain. This will be valuable experience for them with a 100% Mike in the finals.

Albino Rhinos 7 d. Ginger Ninjas 6

In what I personally have to say was one of the most enjoyable and well-spirited games I have been involved in, the Rhinos and Ninjas battled it out in a game that went all the way to the time cap. With the Rhinos throwing a strong zone defence, the Ninjas tried their best to compete. A couple of crucial errors by the Ninjas saw the Rhinos take this close game on sheer resilience and some smart changes in game plan.

Black Panthers 5 d. White Savages 3

In a very low scoring yet extremely competitive affair, the Panthers and Savages showed that defence is the best form of offense. With what Gibbo tells me was a game full of ridiculously long points, the Panthers took the victory and have kept their winning ways alive.

With Ultimate less than 24 hours away, it’ll be great to see 10 full teams there again tomorrow night! So happy throwing until tomorrow night, and may the best Ginger Ninjas win!

A take on the teams of Semester 1, 2011 - The top 4!

Tytans - Captain: Dave Dehollander

It seems Dave is keen to steer clear of the bottom of the ladder this time around. This team is fast and plays hard all game. They've got Carlos and Dave creating some good movement and both of them turning on a dime the whole game and being a handful. They've got "Springs" (Justin) downfield to provide some ridiculously high endzone grabs. But what else is it that's allowing them to tear apart other teams? Can they be that good? Can even the Red Tide stop them? Or is it just that virgin Tie Dye teams are gifted flawless seasons by the frisbee Gods ala The Tie Dye Hards last semester. Hopefully their good form continues and if so we might see them through to a strong grand final against another tough team.

Hyper-Masculine Feminists (HMF) - Mike Larson

Currently ranked second on the ladder after only dropping points in a tie. Starting with one of the fullest teams they've only expanded after picking up EVERY new player coming down to league (not a fact at all) and bringing along every brand spanking new frisbee-virginesque "recruit" most definitely in inverted commas (see def. 2). There's no reason this team should be even close to the top except for the fact they've got Ray Brigade cutting sick and tearing shit up, but well done that they are. A string of coincidental match-ups may be at work, getting to play strong teams when their strongest player were absent, or it could just be Mike's PMMT's (Psychological Mind Manipulation Tricks - search it on here) at work again. Lairies had them with their tail between their legs in a short game but the game was called to an abrupt stop after a solid comeback by HMF with the game ending in a tie. But good luck to them anyway when they face the variety of teams in the league, it will hopefully make for some interesting and tight matches. But for now, it is time for another team to get a stop and tear down their "SHE-MAN EQUALITY" placards they keep bringing down to the fields. Definitely not the underdogs nor the crowd favourites as Red team never is (at least according to the captain in his intro speeches). Some Presidential favour may swing their way during the spectating of the grand final if they're second to pay their league fees after the Canaries (remember...2nd for this one, not first) and with the last two club presidents on the team, they're probably the team to make that happen if not an almost flawless league championship win as well.

Green Machine - Duncan Webley

The Big Man, Dee-Dub. Reigning down terror upon his opponents and his teammates alike! Salski's there to add a jovial touch to the sometimes scary and sometimes surprisingly friendly Dee-Dub demeanor. Whatever it is is working. The green team is gelling now and it won't be hard to imagine them making it some way into the finals. It's still a mystery what's getting them through the season at such a rate. Surely it's not the big man on his lonesome, handling? With half his throws heading straight to the ground in the trademark Duncan way and the other half packing heat that only a few hands can contain this does not sound like the usual recipe for success. Deanna Finn is present I hear. As is the puppy dog like Frenchie Tom. Not a huge team on paper or by means of number of players, this only means they've got more to gain come finals.

Black Panthers - Criegan "Gibbo" Gibson

Boasting the most subs in first week, this team is still a stronghold for full game pressure and tiresome offense. With C-dog's first stint as captain he's lucky to have some heavy ground support. This team has some fast and experienced players. It's boasting the official female fastest woman of Townsville Sarah, as well as the official top two fastest males, James and Peter. That speed is definitely being utilised by Peter whose quick acceleration can be hard to mark and whose mother can actually run faster than all of you out there, leaving you with no hope on the man himself. James' absence at the start hasn't been a hinderance as they're still sitting high on the table. Unfortunately Peter will be taking off for placement in a few weeks and this will provide a sniff of hope for other teams, but only a sniff...his mother is not allowed to replace him.

Well there it is, the teams of Semester 1, 2011. Hopefully it solidifies a few things and makes it clear what moulds need to be broken in the following weeks to advance successfully. The team unity should now be strengthening as the semester draws nearer to a close and the finals approach. The moment in time for leaving anything in the tank has passed and it is all or nothing on the fields now to get your team to the top of those rankings. This isn't life, or your girlfriend...excuses are not an option between the hours of 7 - 9:00 on a Wednesday.

Not long to go, bring your legs and your guts Wednesday night.

Good luck to all the teams and may they continue to enjoy the successful league that we have this semester.

Finals night - Semester 1, 2011

Results:

Grand Final:
Hyper-Masculine Feminists defeated Tytans
The HMF machine was too strong with the Mike/Simon/Ray Brigade trifecta wreaking too much havok for Dave's team. Tytans tried their best but the fast-paced strategy that they play too was overlooked by the composed winners of this semester's League.

3rd/4th playoff:
Ginger Ninjas defeated Lairy Canaries to claim 3rd place. Coming into this match neither team was sure whether it was going to played for real, with the clash of Origin one and the Grand Final that night affecting the mood to complete it early. Unfortunately it went on for a long time and both games were missed. A close game but the Lairies fell apart distracted while the better team on the night took third place.

A take on the teams of Semester 1, 2011 - The bottom 6.

With such a large league happening, it's hard to know who's who and what teams to watch out for. Here's one such take on things with a not too serious edge to things and a lot of bullshit.

Lairy Canaries - Captain: Hugh Osborn

The Lairies are struggling with their identity after failing to realise earlier on what other words "Lairy" rhymed with. Those taunts have stung hard. Another one of the small teams in the league, having only ever had a grand total of 8 players. Fortunately they are the fittest, fastest, baddest 8 people ever to rock a tight-fitting yellow t-shirt. The group contains a complete handful of new players with a mixture of the best brand new "Townsville-based" recruits and the best of what's on offer from the US of A this semester. Two-game nights will make it tough for them to get back up the ladder but last week they managed a win with 6 players, so anything's possible for them.

Ginger Ninjas - Ashley O'Sullivan

Coping with things as any group of Rangas could only hope to do. The Gingers are playing well as a team, possibly better than expected and have had a lot of good upbeat games so far regardless of outcome. This should lead to a strong finish of the season. An injury to Ashley a couple of weeks back was a setback but nowhere near as much as it could have been. Coffee cups with their own names on each could be the key to seeing some more wins this season. No soul sucking though please.

White Savages - Tim Roland

The roster has finally settled after losing their original leader Bobby to an overseas trips. They've picked up the best potential players of the semester in visitors and the Townsville locals alike having gained Owen off the HMF and Damon "Rookie of the Season" Scott from the Canaries early on. Tim the idiot is typically busted up having dropped a full 50kg keg of beer on his big toe at the start of the season putting him out for weeks, and now apparently he's got a bung ankle after dirty tactics from Red team which they call the "Schmankle" or smashed ankle offensive. The leadership is spread three ways but without egos in these position that should be a great thing for them. Some more time is required to pool their collective know-how on captaining and playing ultimate and this will end up leading their team to get them some more wins. If they support each other in the manor of Tie Dye's last semester then they could probably come through as a more dominant team. This team could go feral or could bring down a Sabretooth. The passage of time will tell.

Albino Rhinos - Chris Ende

Not much is known of this rare Rhino. Apparently it lacks pigment which expresses the underlying skin as a kind of salmon pink colour that Chris finds to be a turn-on when worn on guys. Captain Chris Ende. Rampant. Raw. Viscous. Those are the words I would use to describe his frisbee. RRV is the acronym for that. The same sound as the Albino Rhino is rumoured to make during mating. It's actually quite a high-pitched sound and is often mistaken for the call of a bird. Birds. Their shadows during the day make me think someone's thrown a frisbee over my head that I need to try and catch.

Tie Dye Another Day - Matt "Finny" Finn

Finny. Struggling to get the wins he had last year. Has a lot of up-and-coming handler types on the team but it just doesn't seem to match it against the teams in the league this semester. Perhaps more patience with the disc will prevent the fat lazy handler stereotypes from having to play the much dreaded defense? Patience with the disc and some more team building exercises might be the only way to get these guys some more wins - perhaps some trust exercises or a boozy weekend away up in Cairns? Get the disc away from Finny's hands and put that lanky freak in the endzone already. Put trust in God's Hand-lers.

Disc Jockeys - Matty Hamilton

Not jockeying with much down at the bottom, perhaps only the Tie Dyes. This team are keeping their heads held as high as possible after discovering early on that Matty H's 5-foot nothing was the team's tall timber! What a shock. Promises of some support in the way of pick-ups has been thrown out the window by the leadership and the pick-ups showing up and they're gonna have to hang tough and pull through it without. Mixing things up on defense and offense and doing some experimenting might be a lot of fun. Might not help. But fun and new could be winners! They did manage their first win the other week against the Ginger Kids. Well done to them, they can keep their pants on!

Tomorrow will follow the top four teams spiel-ly goodness...
