Week 3 Game Previews

I don’t know about everyone else but Wednesday is my favourite day of the week! That’s coz it’s Frisbee day! Wahoo J
It always excites me writing up these previews because it gives me an excuse to think about running after a wonderfully aerodynamic piece of plastic. Kudos to its maker!
Anyways let’s get to it!

Field 1

RedBalls vs The Green Lanterns

After 2 weeks the RedBalls and Green Lanterns are at opposite ends of the ladder. I’ve heard the Green Lanterns don’t care for ladders though so with their capable line up they look to be able to put up a great fight to push the RedBalls.
After a freak drinking accident the Lanterns captain Christine looks to be down for a few weeks. Who from the Green Lanterns can step up to fill their downed captain Christine’s boots!?
That responsibility falls to Pretty Pete and his boys.
Can the Lanterns merge together to stop the killer one-two-three that is Dave, Mattie & Bevo?
That is what it will take to beat these flaming balls of fury!

Sparkles Tip – The RedBalls to work themselves feverishly to a 13 – 8 victory.

Field 2

Lascivious LadyFingers vs Dye Fast Tie Furious

After last week’s victory Lascivious LadyFingers look to keep on their winning ways against Dye Fast Tie Furious. The LadyFingers are looking good with a couple of key pick-ups in the form of Mark Genge and Junki. The real question to ask is will el Presidente Hugh be at the fields come game time or will he be swimming with the fishes?

The Tie Dye line up is hungry for a win after going down to the RedBalls by 2 in a marathon game last week. With Zane on tactical duties & Stacey on war cry duties expect to see a better prepared Tie Furious line up to come to the battlefield this week!

Some key match-ups across the park will be the battle of the bigs between Hugh & Finny and the battle of the brains between Mark & Zane.

Sparkles Tip – Tie Furious to push through for a 13 – 11 point win.

Field 3

Spastic Spunk vs Dark Matter

In the next match up between Spastic Spunk and Dark Matter the Dark Matter look to extend on their so far undefeated season, while the Spunk look to continue their winning form from last week.
With both teams boasting strong line ups the difference will be which team can show more patience with the disc to use their strike weapons more effectively.
Rumour has it that there has been some secret Dark Matter practise sessions taking part where the team has been practising secret plays code named 'greatest' & James vs Dee score off'. If these plays go to the book expect a barrage coming in through James and Dee being capably fed by Captain Ash O’Sul.
The Spastic Spunk has a solid line up all over. With the solid handling ability of Quint, Nick and Chris they should be able to work the disc all over the field at will.
A huge match up for the night will be Amy Nelson from the Spunk and Dee Finn from Dark Matter. Whoever comes out on top of this match up will go a long way to deciding this match.

Sparkles Tip – Dark Matter to continue in their winning ways taking the match 13 – 10.

Field 4

The Birds vs Clockwork Orange

In the last match up of the week we see The Birds taking on Clockwork Orange. With both teams losing tough games last week they will be looking to bounce back with a win tonight.

Unfortunately for Orange they are still without their inspirational leader Timmy, going down hard last week on his hand. His moral support from the sidelines will be available to rally the team! With the likes of Johannes, Ben & Carlos leading the guys around the park and Aggie DeHollander leading the ladies we can be sure to see Clockwork Orange rally together for an inspirational performance.

On the other side The Birds led by Damon, Cody, Dane & Bekah will be looking to get back on the winning ways shown in week 1. With capable support from Gibbo, FranDawg and the rest of the Birds we should see some good match ups across the park.

Sparkles Tip – The Birds to fly through for a 13 – 9 win.

That rounds up the games for this week! Let’s hear everyone else’s tips and results from last week! Last week I tipped 1 of 4!

Until next week! Keep throwing!

Love from Sparkles

Townsville Ultimate Disc Official Pub Crawl Correspondence

It has now been 3 whole days since the action took place at the pub crawl.

The build up was immense, the tension built as seats disappeared faster than you could blink and the second 60 seater bus then filled steadily to its peak come pub crawl night! Two completely full buses of 120 + Ultimate Pub Crawl patrons with a bloody ludicrous night ahead for all! One sad truth emerged on this pub crawl and it was a lowly blow to all...there is a limit, albeit quite high, on an Ultimate Frisbee Pub Crawl!...I am gutted to discover this as it shakes the ground we stand on and the core of who we are... But fuck now we know and so I look forward to next time when we party harder and test it again!!!

I won't go into a write-up of the night, as familiar as I am with the pub crawl write-ups of old, as ol' MWTDT, the Crow, has gone into the details for us all. Frankly those are some details finer than I could ever imagine and well done sir for compiling those thoughts in the aftermath, you are a brave soul.

I'd like to thank Tim for putting the whole shebang together, as well as the man with the mad pub connections Bobby for getting us some great discounts on drinks and making sure it was a big night. The Ultimate Pub Crawl has certainly cemented itself as a special part of the club calendar and I thank these two for putting their hand up to help out and organise the most anticipated event (bar the Finals) every semester! Well done!

Thank you to everyone who made it along to the pub crawl and to your friends who you brought down. There's a swag of things to look forward to this semester so get your mates down for the barbecues, Australia VS. The World night, the parties, the games, the fun and the Finals. May the best team win, or the sexiest (Lascivious Ladyfingers).

As a reminder to you all if I am not around this Wednesday, it's the last week you can claim the early bird special so don't forget your money or to see Mattie Hamilton to make arrangements on the night. Thanks and enjoy your games!

Townsville Mixed Ultimate League Power Rankings – Week 3

Townsville & out of town readers, thanks for coming back for week 3 power rankings for the Townsville Mixed Ultimate League.
Let’s get straight to it!

1

Dark Matter + 2

With two weeks of games down Dark Matter are sitting pretty on top of the weekly power rankings. The early return of Air David helped to pull Ashley’s Dark Matter together to take a big win against The Birds. The combination of James David & Dee Finn on the field has reformed from last season and is looking just as deadly. This is the team to beat!

2

RedBalls + 2

The RedBalls jumped ahead 2 spots this week with an impressive team win against Dye Fast Tye Furious. The RedBall girls showed their grit spending the first half of the game playing savage. This kind of determination and persistence will keep them going throughout the year. They have a great opportunity to keep up their winning ways with a game against the winless Green Lanterns.

3

The Birds - 2

The Birds went down in a close game against Dark Matter on Wednesday night. Possibly could have been due to being distracted from the amazing shirts that Franich designed himself! Very good effort! With this week’s game being against the winless Clockwork Orange it will be a great opportunity for the Birds to jump back on the winning track! If they underestimate Orange though they could see their fall in the rankings continue in the weeks to come!

4

Dye Fast Tie Furious - 2

The newly named Dye Fast Tie Furious are coming off a tough loss to the RedBalls last week. Some very promising performances from the newer players should help the Tie Dyes join together for a strong showing on Wednesday night against the LadyFingers.

5

Lascivious LadyFingers

The LadyFingers had a strong win over the still winless Green Lanterns last weekend. The addition of plus 1 ex-President Mike 'The General' Larson to Hugh's LadyFingers for the week made for a huge line-up that the Green Lanterns couldn't hold against. With that being Mike's only full game appearance for the LadyFingers it will be interesting to see how Captain Hugh adjusts this week. Expect to see more team involve with some strong showings from Mark Genge and Junki!

6

Spastic Spunk

+ 1

In week 2 Spastic Spunk got a facelift! Getting near on their full team in attendance, with star recruits Bobby Jackson, Duncan the miner & Sammy Morgan stepping into the line-up plus a great new shirt design from Amy Nelson the Spunk are looking legit! The hardest thing will be the ability to fill Duncan the miner's size 16 boots in the alternating weeks he is away! Still a very deep line up with the ability to go far if they can keep on improving!

7

Clockwork Orange - 1

Clockwork Orange have struggled with numbers in the first two weeks of the comp. With week 1 having too many and week 2 having to few they are hoping to balance this all out in week 3. With captain Timmy Roland out for a couple of weeks after injuring his hand it will be up to Johannes, Carlos & Ben to fill the void. With a very solid line up across the park I expect these guys to get some wins under their belt in the next few weeks.

8

The Green Lanterns -

The Green Lanterns are coming together quite quickly now. Following on the green tradition of getting some solid training done before games under the leadership of Christine you can see the team improving more and more with every point they play. With Christine leading the ladies & Peter Roach, Rob Davies and the Man with the Dragon Tattoo running around the park this team has the potential to turn their season around. A tough game against the second seeded RedBalls this week will be a test for them!

With the season moving along nicely we are sure to see some movement with the power rankings in the weeks to come. With one of the most even starts to a season the championship race is still wide open!

Keep your eyes open for more breaking league updates from Sparkles and the Man with the Dragon Tattoo.

Until next time, this is Sparkles signing out.

I'M NOT A REAL BLACKBELT!

Seriously, where do I start? How do I begin to tell such a tale? Do I follow the events in chronological order or dare I tell each story leaving the best for last? By the way, I lied. What happens in Townsville never really happened, but I’m still telling everyone. Why? Because some wondrous people deserve credit where credit is due, because legends cannot grow without one person reciting them, and because it’s just too damn funny. I guess I’ll start off our story like this:

3 cheers for Sean “Bevo” Beveridge
Hip hip Hurray
Hip hip Hurray
Hip hip Hurray

Slow clap as we all read this blog.

I know it has been said time and time again, but if you cannot look into the eyes of Timmy Roland and either give him...

gratuitous amounts of hugs
A beer (or shots)
A smile
A simple thank you

...then you deserve to take classes in courtesy and respect. Not only did he have to organise and collect payment, he had to delegate between others in the allocation of bars. He had the ability to grant us not one but two buses. He gave you opportunities to pay in advance or later the night of the crawl. We all know the pub crawl was a success because of many other people on the Board of Directors, but this was Tim’s baby. Thank you sir. Job well done.

The night started like any other, and as I predicted, many were already tipsy when they got to the bbq (Camila, Germans). With a rusty, small, uneven bbq, “The Crow” (NOT MARYLIN MANSON) was able to accommodate everyone and ward off the line cutters. I’m talking about you, Germans. My outdoor kitchen is not Poland -- even though my family is primarily Polish. One hotdog per person until everyone eats then you are free to grab as many as you want. I witnessed some great costumes such as: Camila Salazar as “The Spirit”, two Wolverines, two “Easy A’s”, Captain America, Black Swan, Iron Man, Maximus from Gladiator, Agent Smith, Men in Black, The Mad Hatter, and the way too popular Karate Kid.

There were obvious clashes in costumes. Mud wrestling was put on the table for the girls to battle over who was the better character, but in the end a chugging race was needed to settle the scores. Who was the impostor? Results below...

Battle #1 - The “Spirit” of Pub Crawls
Camila Salazar vs. Another Spirit dude
Winner = Little Ecuador woman by a mile

Battle #2 - Wolverines - Whose brain cells heal faster?
Quint vs Charlie
Winner = Charlie (the flannel shirt was the decider)

Battle #3 - Lora Croft - Such a Beer Chick
Maxamiliane Schwarz vs. Stacey Weinstock
Winner = Stacy, too legit to quit!

I Didn’t catch the red headed battle between Jaime Broadbent and the other “Easy A” so someone will have to fill us all in with the results.

For those who never witnessed, the lovable James David nearly missed the bus ride from Uni to Riverview Tavern. Taking on his “Air” nickname a little too far, James was dressed with white wings and a diaper for whatever weird movies he is into lol. With an attempt to fly to the next bar a disastrous fail, James stepped into the middle of the road and got the bus to stop before it began its trip to the next bar. Once we arrived the liquor was flowing, the music was bumping, and the antics began. Fresh off her win, Camila’s “spirit” embodied her to take on a game of dares with a sly French man, which ended up with her motor-boating Sammy’s Daisy Dukes. Sammy’s boyfriend, Bobby (The giant banana) was at first stunned, but he quickly expressed his “anything you can do I can do better” attitude.

Other notable costumes were Carol’s genie, Jennette Lund’s Avatar, and the ever greasy “James Dean” look from Mr. Luke McClellan. His rebel without a cause demeanor was showcased in his ability to only buy suspenders as part of his costume.

“I really don’t care if no one knows who I am supposed to be. The costume was cheap and easy.” (Insert funny quip).

Very rebellious buddy. Karina McGrath also dawned the Super Trooper look, and who could forget our favourite kid from the gutter; Antonio Montana! Mr. Manuel Vega sported the rocking white suit and burgandy shirt, allowing us to all find the gangsta inside our souls. Last night the world was his, and he made the most of it, or so I was told.

As I walked around the Avenue I noticed the shots being fired back in rapid succession. So much so that the bartenders forgot to keep count. When asked if the shots were still being served, Luke McClellan confusingly stated:

“Fuck if I know, I’ve had 5 already.”

On the bus ride to the Great Northern Hotel Agent Smith (A-O Suv) and Mike Larson (Gladiator) decided to boycott seats and held onto the rails and each other in a thrusting position that made many weak in the knees. We all desperately tried to recite some drinking songs on the buses but were too drunk to think of some and thus had to keep hearing the German ones about 1,000,000 times too many. You guys have Oktoberfest, there has to be more than one song you know lol.

Who could forget the amazing costume from Raymond Everest “RAY BRIGADE”, who went as the pioneer of the film industry, Charlie Chaplin. Did anyone catch the “Runaway Bride”, Lucy Jensen and her $15 wedding dress? Julia Roberts would have been proud. Beetle Juice was in attendance as well from the blonde vivacious Rach Collett, and I believe I spotted Tinker Bell. I know I saw Peter Pan and his paper mache hat, along with his Native Indian girlfriend Tiger Lilly. Yeah I watch Disney Movies, so what. Haters, relive your childhood once in a while.

To be honest, I don’t really remember much after Monsoons. And the Bank Nightclub was just a blur with hints of raw energy and seductiveness. I blame the techno music and bright lights. It was the same energy that caused Timmy to lose his shirt and proceed to dance on the floor. Word of advice, if you drink with him or anyone else from the Parkfit Gang I would make sure to place a beeper on his face. He was found passed out on the street about 50 metres from the driveway. The Bank was also the proud new owner of my black wig. I actually had no idea I took it off until I got off the bus with Luke and rubbed my head.

“Luke, where’s my wig?”
“You tossed it in the toilet when we were in the bathroom. You said ‘Fuck Wigs!’, and threw it near the urinal of a dude pissing. But he was drunk and might have drenched it.”
“Thank God I didn’t put it back on eh.”

Finally, who could forget President Hugh and his alter ego “Pugh”. The Karate Kid himself, dressed to impress and acting on “energetic” impulses, apparently tried to steal a tazer from a cop after he was refused entry into the Bank. It took 3 cops to take down the mighty “Mr. Miyagi” recruit, who upon noticing the use of brute force to his stomach and face cried out...

"It’s not a real black belt! I’m not a real black belt!”

Word spread fast on the buses and cab rides home. People who didn’t end up going to the crawl knew about it last night. Larson and I even had a drunken conversation/laugh about bailing him out but not being able to do so until Monday. No amount of magic was going to get him into that club, but we admire and love his effort and his hard work to allow us to play frisbee every year. Seriously dude, might need to dial it down a notch next time we drink lol.

If I missed any story then feel free to leave a comment on this blog or in the Facebook group. Better yet, tell me and everyone else on Wednesday how you loved to hang out with us. There was one Facebook comment that went up the night before the crawl.

Katie Morgan, aka Wilma Flinstone: “I’m legitimately sewing a dress for pub crawling tomorrow. It's gettin real up in here.”

This sums it all up. We keep it real here in the Ville and in the Frisbee Family.
So from all of us to all of you, thanks again for a great night. Cheers if you’re still recovering, thanks to everyone who came out, and see you all Wednesday. You have just experienced a pub crawl - Frisbee style. It’s a social explosion, and any of you who were on the bus when Timmy and I gave our speeches I hope you listened. These days will never happen again for some of you. Australia is only a few months for some, but the memories can last a lifetime. Don’t be a stranger anymore and come say hello. I would be honoured to meet anyone new to the family.

An extra funny moment for you to read: I woke up in my bed with my pillows covered in face paint and 5 keys missing from my Macbook Pro. I must have ripped them off in a fit of joy. Oh yeah, send me pictures and videos of the night and I will incorporate them into the big movie slideshow. iMovie is a sweet program and I would love to see shots from everyone involved.

I hope Friday night was everything you could hope for and more.

Sincerely,
The Man with the Dragon Tattoo

Week 2 - Is that Bacon I smell?

Stay out of the editing room "Observer" aka Duncan Webley. I know your tricks.

Another Wednesday has passed (sad face) and therefore another review of the games must be given. I told your captains to enlighten me with some interesting stories, majestic points scored, and inside jokes for today. I was given a variety of those and I hope you enjoy them, Buddha knows I had a laugh or two. It should also be noted that I am expecting a drop in team lists due to everyone dying from the pub crawl. Go hard I say, but be safe and have some fun. Make memories that can be remembered, or have someone film it so you can remember it in the morning. Either way works wonders for myself and the Facebook group. You are all welcome to participate in an Epic Meal Time - Australia Style, which will commence as soon as we can garner enough people to pay for supplies and decide on a perfect date as I am sure we cannot do it before the crawl as scheduled. Anyways, enjoy the review my friends!

Spastic Spunk vs Clockwork Orange
Spunk take it 13-7

The Spastic Spunk's were nearly renamed to the Premature Spunk when they witnessed the awesome stencil that Amy Nelson did for the team shirts. With the added persona the Spunk got off to a good start by taking the first point only to have Clockwork fast forward time and put two on in rapid succession. The game was tight till half time (7-5), but the Spunk started to build a lead due to a lack of battery power to Carlos and the gang. The competition of this game became quite fierce. War cries from Amy, and jacked up grunts from Bobby ensured a less than clean result. After all, where there is spunk there is blood?! Captain Chris you have a dirty mind whilst sending these reviews, and apparently you understand what it's like to go at a woman "Braveheart Style".

The Blood bath began with Timmy Roland going down in a tight contest and losing the ability of his finger (I blame Old Mary Jane Rotten Crotch and her pretty pink panties - bonus marks if you understand the reference). This was only bettered by Ben Prior backhanding Lucas Langlois, breaking his glasses and leaving what will probably be a nice shiner. Clockwork showed great spirit throughout the game despite all the blood, sweat and spunk! Seriously Chris Ende? That's just gross.

Dark Matter vs The Birds
Darkness take it 13-10

"We take you now, live, to Ollie Williams for his in game report. Ollie?"

"IT'S GO'N RAIN!"

"Thanks Ollie but I guess we'll ask the captains themselves."

With the return of James David the team felt like a win was definitely on the cards. Everyone thought this game was going to be close, and evidently enough it was. Dark Matter had a really strong start, forcing two early turnovers in the first 2 points to take an early 2-0 lead. These goals came from the dynamic duo of James and Dee. From then on they used their immense gravitational force and pushed it to 4-1 with some quick points and ending with a 7-5 half. A-O Suv scored his point for the season to get it to 7. He legitimately doesn't care for them, only assisting them. The birds pecked away and retaliated like a batch of hungry woodpeckers and scored a lot of quick points themselves (strategy against Black - catch them off guard with their laziness). This was a really high intensity and fast paced game, each player ran, and ran, and ran! Highlight was Jamie-Lee scoring 2 solid points for the game (therefore scoring as many as James!) There were good hucks from Ash, Dee with her 5 points, and great effort from both teams.

RedBalls vs Dye Hard Tie Furious
Balls 13-11

RedBull may give you wings, but the Redballs give you everything they have. They started the game strong by getting the first 2 points through some good disc movement and patience from each player. Patience is the key new players. You have 10 seconds to figure out a plan of action. Finny's Tie Dye'd commandos pulled back with the next 3 points via some good long throws and some quick movement, as well as some continuation plays. Tie Dye got a break and took half 7-5, but deep down in the reservoirs of his team, Captain Matty Hamilton pulled out some extra cocaine in a can and shot the effort up 10 fold. They gathered their strength together after half and pulled ahead 10 - 9 where the points went back and forth: 11-10, 12-10, 12-11, and you can guess the end. The highlights throughout the game were significant and deserve mention. On the Redballs, Sean Beveridge performed the ever-incredible "Full body layout" to catch the disc on his right side. It was a really sweet piece of ultimate! Other solid performances came from Mattie H running himself ragged all game and handling really well, as well as Allyissa for running hard all game long with minimal subs! For Dye Hard we had great team work from Rohana, Phil & Jackie working the disc among themselves 3/4s of the way up the field and scoring on their own while Finny, Zane & Stacey just cruised along behind them. Ephrain also has been showing some huge improvment already with his cuts,

Last but not least
Green Lanterns vs Lascivious Ladyfingers
Gay Bananas 13-4

With the return of Captain Christine, "Rolo" Peter Roach, Little Godfrey, Ryan Miller, and Robert Davies, The newly named Green Lanterns were set to take on Hugh's Ladies and one other straggler. Leave it to El'Presidente to grab a ringer in Mike Larson. The all encompassing free agent of Townsville Ultimate. Many can describe him as having the ever amusing personalities and indecisiveness of Anne Heche's sexual orientation. "I'm not playing this semester. I am, I'm not"...and so on and so forth. The Lanterns should have pounced on his poaching skills and focused on using their extra amount of male players to run them into submission. Sadly the deep bombs and teamwork play from Hugh and Larson were too much for some of the beginners on the Green team. Hugh relied also on his female of choice, Sanne. Many have predicted she will take the female rookie award in a clean sweep. She may even give Ms. Femme Fatale (Deanna Finn) a run for her money. The interesting job will be how to break a tie if it occurs. See Air David for suggestions.

Point of the game went to Robert Davies and his acrobatic ankle-slip-back-flip-no look grab. The Lanterns were more concerned with getting everyone to touch the disc. The force is working better as well as the stack with cuts coming from many directions. Game point was also decided by a long point resulting from on going "cockroach" techniques. See other veteran players for clarification.

So there you have it again, and sorry for the late response. It is now 2:45pm on a Friday and I know you are all excited for what is to come. Remember my fellow "Ultimate" friends (PUN INTENDED)...Parties come and go, some are good, others are crappy, and then there are some that are grandiose. Think of a Frisbee Pub Crawl like a party run by Sean "P. Diddy" Combs. They cannot be matched.

And for all the suckers who will attempt a Hangover costume, know that you may not be the only ones to do so, and know that this night is not going to be like your nights in Vegas. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. We know that motto, but Townsville has a saying as well:

"What happens in Townsville never really happened."

Our pub crawls are like Pandora's Box. The question is.....can you handle it?

Enjoy the food, the shots, and the memories. See you all in the alcoholic induced gutter we call Flinder's Street.

Your friend and colleague,
The Man with The Dragon Tattoo

Week 2 Game Previews

Week 2 Game Previews

Week 2 of league kicks off tonight! Hope everyone is excited to get started! Some big games around the park all night long. With the 4 winning teams from week 1 playing each other the field of undefeated teams will be thinned out to just two, who will they be? On the opposite end of the ladder the 4 teams that fell short in week one are playing for their first wins of the season. Who will be our cellar dwellers in week two? Maybe Hugh is planning an early bid for the Wooden Spoon to regain tradition? Who knows! We will find out all over the next 12-14 hours!!!

Field 1

Lascivious LadyFingers vs Team Green

In week 2 the games kick off on Field 1 with a cracker of a game with Hugh’s Ladies & Lady-boys & Christine’s green clad team (perhaps their lack of a name is an attempt to lull their opponents into a false sense of security?)
With the return of Christine, Peter & Rob to the battlefield Team Green will be a completely different look side come Wednesday.
While on the other side Hugh has picked up a gun in the form of Mark.
Who will win the battle between Hugh & Peter for aerial dominance?
Will Hugh’s ladies be able to step up and shut Christine down?
Both of these will go a long way to deciding the outcome of the game!

Sparkles Tip – The LadyFinger’s to use their soft touch to take the win 13 – 10.

Field 2

RedBalls vs Tie-Dye

In the first of the two games with last week’s winners Mattie’s RedBalls will take on Finny’s Tie Dye team. With the battle for bragging rights within mates this is sure to be a heated contest!
The combination of Mattie, Dave & Bevo is not to be underestimated. These three leading a relatively new team to victory last week speaks very highly. With the rest of the team mostly unknown they will keep the Tie Dye clad warriors on their toes.
The much awaited return of Tie Dye to their former glory is well underway with the leadership team of Finny, Zane & Stacey passing on their experience to the rest of the team. With promise showing after just one week of games expect great things from this team!

Sparklets Tip – Finny’s Tie Dye squad to dazzle and awe the RedBalls to a 13 – 9 victory.

Field 3

The Pink Birds vs Dark Matter

The second game with the winners from the last week is sure to be a great match! Dane, Cody, Damon and Bekah running around in hot pink for the Birds makes a very solid line! Their capable beginners are sure to help to make life difficult for Ash and the dark side!
On the other side Ash’s powerhouse squad will return the favour to make things tough for the Birds! The real question we have to ask is will James ‘Air’ David make his triumphant return from injury this week or will Ash have to work without his Halibut star? For Ash’s sake we would also hope to see the sticky handed Damien return to the fields!

Sparkles Tip – After a game for the ages Damon’s Pink Birds to fly through convincingly 13 - 8.

Field 4

Spastic Spunk vs Clockwork Orange

On the far side of the park Chris’ Spunk will clash with the Clockwork mechanics of Timmy’s Orange side. Possibly the two quickest teams overall in the entire league, this game will leave the ground scorched from the blistering pace of each team.
With Chris squirting Aaron, Ryan, Bobby, Nick & Amy across the fields you are sure to see some quick disc work from the team with some very very quick points happening!
Timmy will be working his clockwork offence for some very quick points as well with Carlos, Johannes, Josh & Aggie DeHollander tearing up and down the field.

Sparkles Tip – Chris’ Spastic Spunk to fall short just before the climax for Clockwork Orange to go the distance 13 – 11.

Keep those comments rolling in. Hope to see everyone else’s tips as well.

Until tonight, this is Sparkles, signing out.

Townsville Mixed Ultimate League Power Rankings – Week 2

Welcome to the first ever Townsville Mixed Ultimate League Power Rankings!
For all the new readers the purpose of this is to let everyone know what I expect from the league week in week out. Also hope to provoke debates between the teams!
With one week of official league games finished here are the power rankings for week 2!
Lets get to it!

1

The Pink Birds

After one match The Pink Birds led by the talented trio of Damon, Dane & Cody have come out on top of the first ever power rankings. If they can pass down their many talents to the newest recruits then these guys could go very deep into the post season! We will have to wait and see if they can hold form in the weeks to come!

2

Tie-Dye

The traditional colours of Tie Dye for Finny are looking to treat him better than in the previous season. After a slow start in game one against a tough Spastic Spunk team the Tie Dye line-up pulled together to show how even the mere thought of running around in rainbow colours can help form lasting bonds on and off the ultimate fields! Look out for the Tie Dye clad team running around the fields on Wednesday night!

3

Dark Matter

With a name like dark matter you know these guys are going to be trouble! Lead by the Dark Leader Ash O’Sul himself these guys are trouble all over the park. Ash’s leadership abilities combined with the capable abilities of Dee Finn & James ‘Air’ David not to mention the solid beginner talent that is coming together will make this team a force to be reckoned with. A huge match against The Pink Birds this week gives Dark Matter a chance to leapfrog the competition to the top of the Power Rankings. We will see what happens on Wednesday night!

4

RedBalls

With Mike ‘The General’ Larson abandoning his Red coloured post it left the colour open to be taken by the promising leadership talent of Mattie ‘White Chowder’ Hamilton. Joined with the capable support of Dave ‘Bob’ DeHollander and Bevo and a team almost entirely handpicked by Mattie means this team is here to shake this comp up! With a crucial matchup against Finny’s Tie Dye clad warriors this rounds off the top half of week 2’s power rankings!

5

Lascivious LadyFingers

Next on the line is El Presidente Hugh Osborn’s line up of ladies and lady-boys sporting the lovely soft hands (possibly due to the use of special team issue moisturising gloves? Hugh please advise if I can get some of these?). While boasting a solid line up against the Air David less Dark Matter in week one they fell short on Universe Point at the end of the night. Look out for these guys in week two though! After a crucial mid-week trade / league directors generosity they have picked up Mark Genge. This team of lady-boys are ready to slide their way into the winners circle!

6

Clockwork Orange

As our man with the Dragon Tattoo stated last week, Clockwork Orange and RedBalls battled off for the dominance of the warm colours, with RedBalls winning in a thriller. Don’t write Orange off though! With a ton of male talent & experience and one of the star female recruits Catherine ‘Aggie’ DeHollander we are sure to see great things from this team! Watch out for the battle this week between the league’s leading thugs, Carlos ‘I even take out my own team’ Castro & Chris ‘I’m gunna get right in your grill and make you angry’ Ende. Will be a great game to watch!

7

Spastic Spunk

Speaking of Chris Ende, his team, the curiously named Spastic Spunk are coming fresh off a tough match up against Finny’s soon to be Tie Dye clad team. With the quality players in the current line up and the talent still to come in Ryan Miller, Bobby Jackson and big Duncan Webley I can see Chris’s spunky team working its way up the power rankings in the weeks to come!

8

Team Green

Last but certainly not least comes the currently un-named Team Green. A tough week 1 game with key players unavailable, Godfrey, with a injured wrist (maybe he should try the other hand in the future?), Peter "Rolo" Roach, with prior commitments, Rob Davies, spending his time in the snow & Captain Christine Kline, down and out with sickness. With all this talent sitting on the sidelines it was left to The Man with the Dragon Tattoo to lead the team against the number 1 ranked team, a tough ask for anybody! In week 2 with all of this talent coming back into the line-up expect things to get shaken up very quickly!

With the 4 winning teams from week 1 facing off this week we will be down to only 2 teams with undefeated records come the end of week two. This leaves opportunities for every team to push their way up both the official ladder and the unofficial power rankings!

We will leave it at this for this week, until Wednesday Townsville Ultimate disc players, remember play hard & party harder!

Sunday Funday!

It was a dark, ominous, and mysterious time. Many had wandered blindly into the abyss of school, work, and trivial parts of their life, and it could be said that they were looking for an escape. There was the afternoon beer, wine, spirit, and even Australian moonshine available to certain students, but the void seemed to be growing with every slight sip and every glance towards the hills of Mt. Stuart. As the times seemed darker and the hours longer, the Gods of Frisbee proclaimed this day a sacred day.

"LET THERE BE FRISBEE", they said.

And so it came to be. Every Sunday from now on, Ultimate would be played at the sacred AFL fields at 3:30pm. Allegiance may be given to God, Allah, Buddha (although I'm sure he wouldn't mind if you took the day off), and John Smith on a Sunday. But second in your mind should be the idea of honouring the ancestors of this great sport with a well rounded game, awesome friends, and an occasional brew. Drinking with friends is always better than by yourself.

Sooner or later the Wednesday games will become more competitive, more entertaining, and more exciting. Sooner or later, Wednesday will not be enough. So I invite all of you amazing friends from lands all over the world to come and participate in Sunday games/practice sessions at the stomping grounds of JCU Ultimate Frisbee.

The great French author, Albert Camus once said:
"Life is the sum of all your choices."

If that is the case, why not make a great choice in coming to a Sunday session? School matters, priorities are important, and managing your time is a skill most have a hard time achieving. But a couple hours out of your day to rejoice in friendship and positive energy is just what the body and the heart needs.

This coming Wednesday I will be asking and looking for the following from your captains:
1.) Outstanding performances from each player
2.) Examples of altruism and good will to all players
3.) The biggest smiles in the history of smiling

All will be incorporated in next week's review. I want to hear some funny stories. I want to hear new nicknames from your team captains, inside jokes, and all around great memories. The more I hear, the more I write. And that way you can remember them forever. My written words will make you immortal and will do their best to make sure that you never forget your semester abroad. I write because I want you to never forget life in Australia.

Act out, go crazy, smile. I will be when I see you. Enjoy Sundays because Monday is around the corner, and I for one can't stand them lol.

See ya out there Champs!

Week 1 - Holy Santa Clause Shit! This will be a fun Semester

Yeah, I got drunk again. But this time I was given some information from your fearless frisbee leaders on how your games went. Hopefully I can give your excellent energy and enthusiasm the justice it deserves in the following summary of Wednesday, August 17th, 2011. Game on folks....here we go.

First on the docket:

RedBalls vs Clockwork Orange
13-9 for RedBalls

On Field #4, Matty's Redballs battled Clockwork Orange to decide who was the dominant “warm” colour of the spectrum. It was a riveting game that truly showed how beginner Frisbee is supposed to be played. Even in such a short time, these two teams came together and really started to jell. After an early lead Clockwork backed off the blistering pace to ensure that the new players received some disc time and could learn more about the game we all know and love. While Captain Timmy’s veterans tended to a stricken red player, Dave Dehollander snuck the Ballers into the lead and took the half. Red shot to 11 points after the break. However, using all the cogs in their vast machine, Clockwork orange grounded out a 5 point come back before Hannah 'Tigress' Karlson took the game point for the Reds. These are two very good teams to watch in the future, especially with Dehollander’s team making it to the finals last semester. And those clockwork fuckers are crazy, basing their name off of a deranged serial killer from Stanley Kubrick. Well done captains, because this game could have gone either way.

Dark Matter vs Lascivious LadyFingers
13-12 Dark Matter

Down 7-3 in the first half, the Darkness came back in the second. It was as if a black hole was sucking all of the discs into the hands of Luke’s deep cuts and Nick’s tireless defense. Point of the game went to Jamie-Lee and Brooke's back and forth momentum to each other from halfway to score. There was a good running match-up between Deanna (who is Townsville's amazing female player) and Sanne, who proved herself to be the Ladyfingers' scoring machine in last week's game. As it drew to a close we saw the score tied 12 all, and it was up to the coaching strategies of a sidelined James, A-O Suv, and Deanna Finn to find a winning throw. To be honest, when you have James “Air” David and Ashley taking the guys under their wings, and Dee leading her Femme Fatales, The Dark Matter are a definite team to watch out for. Don’t count out the LadyFingers. Captain Hugh leaps for those discs in a way that mimics the energy of a “lascivious” old man chasing after a sorority girl. And Robert Dehollander has some handling skills as well. Hugh, did you enjoy this “lavish” gesture of incorporating your team name to your skills? Seriously, watch out for this Luke character. Haven’t seen speed like that since last semester’s road runner, Danny Incontrera. How is it possible that Ashley gets the speedy ones?

Team Green vs The Pink Birds
13-3 - Birds

Both teams are a working title (at least the Green team is) so look for some improvement in next week’s blog. Tonight’s matchup proved to be the very essence of what Ultimate Frisbee really is. It was an incredible social experience with a tonne of new players basically being thrown onto one single team with a few vets and thus learning the fine points of the game. There was comradery, respect of each teammate on both teams, positive feedback, and motivation. That’s what it’s all about. And everyone played their hearts out. The girls of the green team have shown excellent stamina and determination for the disc. Big ups to Sophie for getting open and scoring a point, Ricky, for handling the whole game, and Larson for helping out in the first half. I see an immense amount of improvement to come, especially with Mitch’s general manager skills and trade negotiations. The Birds were dominated by Dane West with his acrobatic leaps and defensive maneuvers, Creigan Gibson’s handling skills, and Captain Damon’s leadership. The Green team has done some major restructuring so do not count them out when you see them on the schedule.

Spastic Spunk vs Tie-Dye
13-7 - Tie-Dye

The Spastic Spunk and the Tie Dye's dived straight into their game and began to tear the pants off each other. Both sides traded points and felt each other up on what can be seen as the definition of defense. Eventually the Tie Dyes found their mojo and created some much needed breathing room. In the end the Spastic Spunk's were left chasing their tails. It was a hard fought game with lots of movement around the field to all players on each team. Kudos to all that played! It should also be noted that the Spunk have what seems to be a very aggressive, competitive, energetic and diabolical female player. I think her name is Amy. Don’t be surprised if she starts scoring up a storm. The “ultimate” force is strong with that one. And I know I'm still kind of new to the family, but does Finny always choose Tie Dye? Is there some hidden joke I still don't know about? Spunk players keep notice, Captain Christopher has already changed his Facebook picture to a sperm with sunglasses. Expect some t-shirts made in the future.

So that's what happened this past week. To all of the new recruits, I can tell you that it only gets better. Day and night, it get's better and better, till you wish that every day was Wednesday. The days fly by and every hour that passes brings you closer to the action. It's a fun and harrowing feeling that rises up like a storm until the sound of thunder echoes in your mind. Its origin is not from the mind, rather, the thunder comes from your energy on that field. It resides in your ability to make the most of your time in Oz and it puts a fire in your soul that breeds and lives on positivity. This energy echoes to everyone outside of the AFL fields and lets them know what they're missing.

I hope you all had as much fun as I did, and I hope you are all eagerly awaiting next Wednesday and the pub crawl to follow.

Yours truly,
The Man with the Dragon Tattoo

Welcome to the Jungle and the Best Semester of Your Life

Well I have to say I was taken back when the Frisbee gods asked me to join the blogging team. I will do my best to keep this short and sweet and leave you with some words of wisdom that hopefully brings energy and motivation to this semester. In the future I will help out with reviews of the games in action. Tonight's post will encompass a few facets of why joining the Ultimate Frisbee crew was the best decision of your life, and by the end of your reading I hope that you will do your best to be open, honest, care free, and down right extroverted to the max!

Before I go on we all need to again recognize the contributions the Board has made to make the season a success. 3 cheers for Hugh, Duncan, Finny, Zane, Ashley, Tim Roland for his "MONK" recruitment tactics, and a whole bunch of others who (as A-O Sullivan stated) "are the first to arrive and the last to leave".

For those who don't know me, let me fill you in in the simplest way I can. I joined this league during the first semester. I had no idea what I was getting into but rest assured, it was the best decision ever made. Why? Because it gave me the ability to meet everyone from across the globe, it allowed me to learn a fast and skillful game, and they took me in as family. Why would anyone not want to join this group? If you haven't seen me on campus or on Wednesdays it's because I was on practicum, teaching boarding school kids and having them laugh at my accent. I am a Canadian from the great province of Ontario. I play lacrosse, study education and hope to teach History and SOSE to these little Aussie brats for as long as I can. I was a member of the best looking frisbee team in the history of teams - THE BLACK PANTHERS! The rest you can find out on your own. I don't bite. I'm the tall, smiling, nice, funny, charming Canuck with bright tattoos. Enough about that, let me tell you what you are in for these next 4 months.

You are to expect the following: Raging parties, Facebook adds from many, nicknames being made, inside jokes being created, and bonds to last a lifetime. Other notable memories include (but are not limited to): death defying plays, a smile from ear to ear when you see Wednesday on the calendar, and one of the best games of the semester "AUSTRALIA vs. THE WORLD". All you Americans, Norwegians, Germans, French, Greek, and my fellow country men and women must all be there. I am tired of hearing the Green and Gold goat us and act the opposite of humble. Some notable memories for you all to laugh at and for some to remember:

1.) During a pool/bbq party a bat flew by and shit directly into Timmy's beer while he was actively swimming. I wish I was making this shit up but I'm not. That bat has the accuracy of a Apollo's arrows.

2.) A pub crawl where we saw more than one Superman, an interesting Hulk, a Robin Hood who dropped his bow and arrow in the Men's Stall (Ashley you pisstank lol), a Batman being asked to stop acting like he can fly from atop a bar table (know your role kiddo, Batman can't fly), a Thundercat (excellent choice in costume!), and the Red Guy from TRON...Larson your costume was EPIC!

3.) Some interesting team cheers that required the remembrance of a techno beat with Barbara Striesand, and a poetic masterpiece by Captain "Gibbo" - Creigan Gibson.

4.) An after frisbee game that required ninja focus and lightning reflexes...See Finny and David Dehollender for clarification.

5.) David's bold move of chugging Canadian Maple Syrup on Canada Day.

6.) Matt Pyne's ability to miss almost the entire season of frisbee with his Black Panther team. It's ok bud you'll always be a panther.

7.) Captain Gibbo's ability to wear one shirt every time he went out drinking. The infamous Striped Shirt

So to all of you fellow foreigners, Welcome to the Jungle! North Queensland is filled with excellent scenery, a beautiful beach, and every known poisonous organism ever known. WATCH OUT FOR DROPBEARS! But you are now part of the frisbee family, and oh how lucky you are. We will take care of you and make sure that you have the best time of your life. Life is simple. Live in the present moment, smile, realize that life has no ordinary moments. Happiness is not something to be attained in material fashion. It is a mindset. I guarantee that you will have that now that you are a part of this family.

Get ready, get set, get your f***ing game faces on! Townsville Ultimate Frisbee has commenced once more. Don't you dare hold back, and don't be the one to say: "If only I was more social, how much more fun would I have had." You get what you put into it.

Welcome to Mother Nature's Thunderdome...and congratulations on realizing this:

"Life is a book, and those who don't travel only read the first page."

And I'm going to say it again, seriously...be positive. There is no room for negativity here.

See you on the field of battle "With Faith and Honour held high!" -- It's a Black Panther thing

Sincerely yours,
The Man with the Dragon Tattoo

Halibut Summary 2011 by Finny

Finny's Halibut Summary from the Gold Coast 2011 taken from the Townsville Halibut Facebook Group
So Town Town - Taste my Rainbow performed admirably at all levels of the Halibut tourney. Won 4 of 8 games, came last at the talent show (very poor strip tease and rainbow interpretive dance) special mentions to Slick McWings aka Hugh & Brandon Godfrey for being our strippers & to Megan Barnes for ripping good ol' Slick's shirt straight off his back. Won the party though, the legend himself Matthew Hamilton was last man standing, spending the last 3 hours out in town alone doing shots by himself, such a MC! Although he was wrote off until the 3rd game of the day (epic hangover / epic softcock) also got gum stuck in his hair somehow! EPIC!!! We also seem to have a ready made Villain in the fold Christine Kline who was stealing things left right and center. Best steal was a bottle of wine in the middle of the foyer at the party, good effort!

Sunday night team bonding session was lovely beverages followed by a night out at Infinity, a laser light and optical illusion tourist attraction, highly recommend going! Very good end to a very good weekend! Oh and can't forget the The most amazing pie shop in world, Pie Face. Just wow.

All in all was a amazing weekend that I would recommend to all! Bundles of fun along with aching legs from epic games! Can't wait for next year!
Time for team breakfast after another great night!
Until next time, love from Finny aka Mr. Sparkle! (ask for story for new nickname)
