So maybe it's a bit late.....

This week I decided to prioritise uni over Frisbee…...ridiculous I know! So I’ll get straight in to the results!

Game 1

Green Machine 9 d. Disc Jockeys 5

In what I was told a great game, the height lacking Disc Jockeys took on the overly tall Green Machine. With Captain Matt Hamilton feeling fantastic once again, the Disc Jockeys are no push over team. However, the height seemed to be the goods in this game with the Green Machine taking the win.

Tytans 10 d. Tye Dye Another Day 8

I thought that watching the White Savages against Tye Dye Another Day, this took confusing to a whole new level. In the battle of tie dye supremacy, the Tytans had a bit of an advantage being able to field a whole team…..however in a close game (with a score line that Finny assured me was ‘legit’), the Tytans took the win! Hopefully those Tye Dyes can live another day!

Lairy Canaries 10 d. Ginger Ninjas 4

With the Canaries already on the back foot without inspirational leader Hugh there to man the ship, the Canaries were in for a tough time against an in form Ninjas. However, the Canaries played to their strengths and with only 6 players managed to get a pretty comfortable win. Canaries had the game won after a mammoth point in the middle of the game went their way!

Hyper-Masculine Feminists 9 d. White Savages 5

The question of this game was whether handling king Owen could take down his former red teammates. With a strong showing needed by the HMF to keep their unbeaten record alive, the most unrecognizable superhero of the pub crawl Travis “Quail Man” Rivard put in a stellar performance to help his team take the glory.

Black Panthers 8 d. Albino Rhinos 4

This game, similar to what I’m sure happens in the wild, saw the Panthers take out the Albino Rhinos in the longest time capped game I have seen. With the Panthers sporting a very strong lineup, the Rhinos put up a tough fight to keep them to as many points as they did. Will be good to see these two teams face each other again in the finals!

Game 2

Tytans 10 d. Disc Jockeys 2

The Tytans, whose top of the table glory surely has to end sometime, again looked a team to fear in the finals with the win over the Disc Jockeys. With Carlos again starring for the Tytans, it’s hard to see where their winning streak will end! Disc Jockeys were simply outplayed by a very strong team.

Green Machine 10 d. Lairy Canaries 5

With the Canaries clearly exhausted after their mammoth effort against the Ginger Ninjas, the Green Machine looked to keep on rolling. And indeed they did, putting on a great showing to take down the Canaries. The Canaries can hold their heads high, and with the return of Hugh tomorrow night are sure to be dangerous!

Hyper-Masculine Feminists 10 d. Tye Dye Another Day 6

In another ‘Finny told me this was the score’ game, the HMF looked to keep their streak alive again. With captain Mike Larson spending most of this game off the field after a Timmy Roland run-in the previous game, the HMF played strongly and showed they can do it without their captain. This will be valuable experience for them with a 100% Mike in the finals.

Albino Rhinos 7 d. Ginger Ninjas 6

In what I personally have to say was one of the most enjoyable and well-spirited games I have been involved in, the Rhinos and Ninjas battled it out in a game that went all the way to the time cap. With the Rhinos throwing a strong zone defence, the Ninjas tried their best to compete. A couple of crucial errors by the Ninjas saw the Rhinos take this close game on sheer resilience and some smart changes in game plan.

Black Panthers 5 d. White Savages 3

In a very low scoring yet extremely competitive affair, the Panthers and Savages showed that defence is the best form of offense. With what Gibbo tells me was a game full of ridiculously long points, the Panthers took the victory and have kept their winning ways alive.

With Ultimate less than 24 hours away, it’ll be great to see 10 full teams there again tomorrow night! So happy throwing until tomorrow night, and may the best Ginger Ninjas win!

A take on the teams of Semester 1, 2011 - The top 4!

Tytans - Captain: Dave Dehollander

It seems Dave is keen to steer clear of the bottom of the ladder this time around. This team is fast and plays hard all game. They've got Carlos and Dave creating some good movement and both of them turning on a dime the whole game and being a handful. They've got "Springs" (Justin) downfield to provide some ridiculously high endzone grabs. But what else is it that's allowing them to tear apart other teams? Can they be that good? Can even the Red Tide stop them? Or is it just that virgin Tie Dye teams are gifted flawless seasons by the frisbee Gods ala The Tie Dye Hards last semester. Hopefully their good form continues and if so we might see them through to a strong grand final against another tough team.

Hyper-Masculine Feminists (HMF) - Mike Larson

Currently ranked second on the ladder after only dropping points in a tie. Starting with one of the fullest teams they've only expanded after picking up EVERY new player coming down to league (not a fact at all) and bringing along every brand spanking new frisbee-virginesque "recruit" most definitely in inverted commas (see def. 2). There's no reason this team should be even close to the top except for the fact they've got Ray Brigade cutting sick and tearing shit up, but well done that they are. A string of coincidental match-ups may be at work, getting to play strong teams when their strongest player were absent, or it could just be Mike's PMMT's (Psychological Mind Manipulation Tricks - search it on here) at work again. Lairies had them with their tail between their legs in a short game but the game was called to an abrupt stop after a solid comeback by HMF with the game ending in a tie. But good luck to them anyway when they face the variety of teams in the league, it will hopefully make for some interesting and tight matches. But for now, it is time for another team to get a stop and tear down their "SHE-MAN EQUALITY" placards they keep bringing down to the fields. Definitely not the underdogs nor the crowd favourites as Red team never is (at least according to the captain in his intro speeches). Some Presidential favour may swing their way during the spectating of the grand final if they're second to pay their league fees after the Canaries (remember...2nd for this one, not first) and with the last two club presidents on the team, they're probably the team to make that happen if not an almost flawless league championship win as well.

Green Machine - Duncan Webley

The Big Man, Dee-Dub. Reigning down terror upon his opponents and his teammates alike! Salski's there to add a jovial touch to the sometimes scary and sometimes surprisingly friendly Dee-Dub demeanor. Whatever it is is working. The green team is gelling now and it won't be hard to imagine them making it some way into the finals. It's still a mystery what's getting them through the season at such a rate. Surely it's not the big man on his lonesome, handling? With half his throws heading straight to the ground in the trademark Duncan way and the other half packing heat that only a few hands can contain this does not sound like the usual recipe for success. Deanna Finn is present I hear. As is the puppy dog like Frenchie Tom. Not a huge team on paper or by means of number of players, this only means they've got more to gain come finals.

Black Panthers - Criegan "Gibbo" Gibson

Boasting the most subs in first week, this team is still a stronghold for full game pressure and tiresome offense. With C-dog's first stint as captain he's lucky to have some heavy ground support. This team has some fast and experienced players. It's boasting the official female fastest woman of Townsville Sarah, as well as the official top two fastest males, James and Peter. That speed is definitely being utilised by Peter whose quick acceleration can be hard to mark and whose mother can actually run faster than all of you out there, leaving you with no hope on the man himself. James' absence at the start hasn't been a hinderance as they're still sitting high on the table. Unfortunately Peter will be taking off for placement in a few weeks and this will provide a sniff of hope for other teams, but only a sniff...his mother is not allowed to replace him.

Well there it is, the teams of Semester 1, 2011. Hopefully it solidifies a few things and makes it clear what moulds need to be broken in the following weeks to advance successfully. The team unity should now be strengthening as the semester draws nearer to a close and the finals approach. The moment in time for leaving anything in the tank has passed and it is all or nothing on the fields now to get your team to the top of those rankings. This isn't life, or your girlfriend...excuses are not an option between the hours of 7 - 9:00 on a Wednesday.

Not long to go, bring your legs and your guts Wednesday night.

Good luck to all the teams and may they continue to enjoy the successful league that we have this semester.

Finals night - Semester 1, 2011

Results:

Grand Final:
Hyper-Masculine Feminists defeated Tytans
The HMF machine was too strong with the Mike/Simon/Ray Brigade trifecta wreaking too much havok for Dave's team. Tytans tried their best but the fast-paced strategy that they play too was overlooked by the composed winners of this semester's League.

3rd/4th playoff:
Ginger Ninjas defeated Lairy Canaries to claim 3rd place. Coming into this match neither team was sure whether it was going to played for real, with the clash of Origin one and the Grand Final that night affecting the mood to complete it early. Unfortunately it went on for a long time and both games were missed. A close game but the Lairies fell apart distracted while the better team on the night took third place.

Semester Results:
1st: Hyper-Masculine Feminists
2nd: Tytans
3rd:
Ginger Ninjas
4th:
Lairy Canaries
5th: Green Machine
6th: Black Panthers
7th: Albino Rhinos
8th: Tie-Dye Another Day
9th: White Savages
10th: Disc Jockeys

A take on the teams of Semester 1, 2011 - The bottom 6.

With such a large league happening, it's hard to know who's who and what teams to watch out for. Here's one such take on things with a not too serious edge to things and a lot of bullshit.

Lairy Canaries - Captain: Hugh Osborn

The Lairies are struggling with their identity after failing to realise earlier on what other words "Lairy" rhymed with. Those taunts have stung hard. Another one of the small teams in the league, having only ever had a grand total of 8 players. Fortunately they are the fittest, fastest, baddest 8 people ever to rock a tight-fitting yellow t-shirt. The group contains a complete handful of new players with a mixture of the best brand new "Townsville-based" recruits and the best of what's on offer from the US of A this semester. Two-game nights will make it tough for them to get back up the ladder but last week they managed a win with 6 players, so anything's possible for them.

Ginger Ninjas - Ashley O'Sullivan

Coping with things as any group of Rangas could only hope to do. The Gingers are playing well as a team, possibly better than expected and have had a lot of good upbeat games so far regardless of outcome. This should lead to a strong finish of the season. An injury to Ashley a couple of weeks back was a setback but nowhere near as much as it could have been. Coffee cups with their own names on each could be the key to seeing some more wins this season. No soul sucking though please.

White Savages - Tim Roland

The roster has finally settled after losing their original leader Bobby to an overseas trips. They've picked up the best potential players of the semester in visitors and the Townsville locals alike having gained Owen off the HMF and Damon "Rookie of the Season" Scott from the Canaries early on. Tim the idiot is typically busted up having dropped a full 50kg keg of beer on his big toe at the start of the season putting him out for weeks, and now apparently he's got a bung ankle after dirty tactics from Red team which they call the "Schmankle" or smashed ankle offensive. The leadership is spread three ways but without egos in these position that should be a great thing for them. Some more time is required to pool their collective know-how on captaining and playing ultimate and this will end up leading their team to get them some more wins. If they support each other in the manor of Tie Dye's last semester then they could probably come through as a more dominant team. This team could go feral or could bring down a Sabretooth. The passage of time will tell.

Albino Rhinos - Chris Ende

Not much is known of this rare Rhino. Apparently it lacks pigment which expresses the underlying skin as a kind of salmon pink colour that Chris finds to be a turn-on when worn on guys. Captain Chris Ende. Rampant. Raw. Viscous. Those are the words I would use to describe his frisbee. RRV is the acronym for that. The same sound as the Albino Rhino is rumoured to make during mating. It's actually quite a high-pitched sound and is often mistaken for the call of a bird. Birds. Their shadows during the day make me think someone's thrown a frisbee over my head that I need to try and catch.

Tie Dye Another Day - Matt "Finny" Finn

Finny. Struggling to get the wins he had last year. Has a lot of up-and-coming handler types on the team but it just doesn't seem to match it against the teams in the league this semester. Perhaps more patience with the disc will prevent the fat lazy handler stereotypes from having to play the much dreaded defense? Patience with the disc and some more team building exercises might be the only way to get these guys some more wins - perhaps some trust exercises or a boozy weekend away up in Cairns? Get the disc away from Finny's hands and put that lanky freak in the endzone already. Put trust in God's Hand-lers.

Disc Jockeys - Matty Hamilton

Not jockeying with much down at the bottom, perhaps only the Tie Dyes. This team are keeping their heads held as high as possible after discovering early on that Matty H's 5-foot nothing was the team's tall timber! What a shock. Promises of some support in the way of pick-ups has been thrown out the window by the leadership and the pick-ups showing up and they're gonna have to hang tough and pull through it without. Mixing things up on defense and offense and doing some experimenting might be a lot of fun. Might not help. But fun and new could be winners! They did manage their first win the other week against the Ginger Kids. Well done to them, they can keep their pants on!

Tomorrow will follow the top four teams spiel-ly goodness...

Competitions

One of the best ways to improve your skills and enjoy Ultimate to its fullest extent is attending competitions. This is where it's at! You get to travel with your mates, play ultimate, party, and generally be all-round successful at life and stuff or at least relive your glorious moments from the day on the field. But seriously, flights are cheap and billeting is easily provided so really you shouldn't have to struggle in the financial department to attend one or two competitions a year or as crazy many as you want. Start putting away some money for these now, you won't be disappointed.

There are many different types of tournaments. Varying number of days, beach or grass, fun, State level, National level, International, Mixed, Open's, Women's, Hat tournaments (team is picked out of a hat for duration), King and Queen Hat tournaments (individual plays on newly created teams each game), party based tournaments, "boutique" party based tournaments aka. Byron Badman's Birthday Bash in Nov.? etc etc. the list goes on!

Many non-serious competitions will usually offer a pick-up team or can slot you onto a team IF you aren't up for organising a group of 10 - 20 people to attend with you. Or with Hat tournaments, the object is not to have a team to begin with and to play with many new players, often with Worlds level players alongside you (eg. Melbourne Hat). If you know enough people from other towns and cities who want you on their team you can maybe even start doing this for more serious comps. But whatever you do, don't miss out because you don't have a team, because that's not an excuse.

Now having said this, Halibut is coming up. Halibut is the best regular Queensland Mixed Tournament and usually runs out of Brisbane around the end of July (my Birthday), though this time the beginning of August. This time Stef Rappazzo the Mayor of Slamtown, is hosting the tournament in the Gold Coast. Last year he was Tournament Director of this event and it was a beautiful affair with creative new additions from previous years including the addition of much needed new shorts, Halibut shorts. This time around it will probably be even better as he's running it from home. I believe it'll be a weekend after uni semester 2 has kicked off, but very close to the start.

The spiel from the AFDA (Australian Flying Disc Association) website.

So now that you know, start talking amongst your mates, see who wants to go, whether you want to go as a team or pick up on a team and learn from some new people or whatever. Pick a few other comps for later on! Melbourne Hat I would highly recommend, except it's fucking cold and wet there, but those problems can be counteracted somehow which I haven't yet figured out. Usually the limiting factor in Townsville for team formation is girls so find as many of them as you can who'll be here in August and take them to beach for a throw. Pretend it's for social reasons, but really keep that underly focus inside your head of improving their throwing technique and layout abilities so that they can be Halibut ready by August (no sexism intended). If you need extras start talking to players from the host city, usually there are people who miss out and don't get on a team...you might have to cause...shotgun, Sarah and Dee and Sam already. Anyone I missed, shotgun.

Lastly, Townsville usually gets an automatic spot for Mixed Nationals which is held in October in Melbourne this year. With the majority of Townsville's players having only just tasted tournament level ultimate at Regionals here this year, the extra experience of more tournaments is necessary to prepare you to tackle the bigger, longer, tougher ones so that you can contribute more and more to the team. Whether that experience provides a physical test of your abilities, mental strengthening, or makes you more aware of areas you can improve or are good at before next time, then it is well worth investing in to make that progression up through the ranks and to help develop Townsville Ultimate by upping your own skill level! Get your arse to some more tournaments already! What are you waiting for! Visit www.afda.com

Finally.....league is back!

Its goooooood to be back! You get the pleasure of everybody’s favourite Ginger Ninja Ashley guiding you through this week in Ultimate! It’s been a long time in between this week’s games and the last time we had league. But after the quality of the games on Wednesday, it’s as if we never left! With each team having to play 2 games, it made for an interesting night indeed.

Game 1

Disc Jockeys vs Ginger Ninjas

In what was to be the battle of the cellar dwellers, both of these teams came out on the field with something to prove. With injury/illness doubts over the fearless leadership of both Matty Hamilton and Ashley O’Sullivan, it was sure to be a tight contest. However, the Ninjas came out very strong and never looked back! Withstanding a couple of onslaughts by the never say die Disc Jockeys, the Ninjas ended up taking this one comfortably.
Final Score: Ginger Ninjas 10 d. Disc Jockeys 1

Tie-Dye Another Day vs White Savages

Finally having a chance to use their newly made (and might I say, pretty fancy looking) jerseys, the Tye-Dyes were hoping that this would take them to victory. Unfortunately for this band of rainbow coloured players lead by Finny, the White Savages had other ideas. The Savages through smart throws, cuts and I’m sure a little bit of afro magic, ended up with the win.
Final Score: White Savages 10 d. Tie-Dye Another Day 2

Black Panthers vs Green Machine

A game that pitted former team mates Duncan “Midget” Webley and Gibbo as opposite captains was sure to a fiery encounter. With the return of James “Pinky” David to whichever team needed more subs, it was sure to be a close encounter. After a number of comebacks and surges by both teams throughout the game, the influence of James and super-sub Rob Edmond was the difference and the Green Machine powered home to victory.
Final Score: Green Machine 8 d. Black Panthers 5

Tytans vs Albino Rhinos

Having already sealed more wins in two games than in his whole last season, it looks as if the Tytans and Dave DeHollander are the goods this season. However, the clearly colour-confused Rhinos were hoping to put a stop to this. With Carlos looking as dominant as his namesake Fidel in offense, the Rhinos were powerless even with the best effort of ET “Phone Home” Hine.
Final Score: Tytans 10 d. Albino Rhinos 2

Hyper-Masculine Feminists vs Lairy Canaries

Just about the most hotly contested 60 minutes of Ultimate you will see pitted the Canaries against the Feminists. The HMF were strengthened by the return of Simon “Team +1” Urquhart after his tour of countless licensed venues overseas. Either someone forgot to tell these teams that scoring points is how you win, or some of the best defensive efforts in Townsville Ultimate were put on show in this game! Either way, it made for some great entertainment.
Final Score: Hyper-Masculine Feminists 6 drew with Lairy Canaries 6

Game 2

Disc Jockeys vs Tie-Dye Another Day

With both teams suffering heavy defeats in the first game of the night, I’m sure both of them were looking to turn the tide. With Nic Pattillo strengthening the undermanned Jockeys and Megan Lundin on fire in offense, they looked for their first victory of the season. In a close encounter and solid showing by both teams, the Jockeys took the win over a Tie-Dye team that may be partially blinded by the brightness of their shirts. Good showing by Mollando Bloom who scored a point!
Final Score: Disc Jockeys 8 d. Tie-Dye Another Day 6

Ginger Ninjas vs. Green Machine

After falling before the line in a couple of games, the Ninjas looked to keep their winning ways going against the Green Machine and their solid offensive assembly. For two very attacking teams, this turned in to a game of defense and patience for both teams. After losing Hannah at half time (who unlike Hugh Osborn, hasn’t figured out that ultimate is more important than uni), the Ninjas were reduced to 6. With this advantage in players, the Green Machine and offensive weapon Jen Newton piled on the pressure, but the Ninjas held strong to take the win in a great game.
Final Score: Ginger Ninjas 7 d. Green Machine 6

White Savages vs Tytans

Two teams in great form faced off in this top of the table clash that can only be described as “white versus basically white”. With the Savages threatening the whole time with a zone defense, and Damon Scott always a danger in offense it looked a tough task for the Tytans to keep their unbeaten streak alive. In a game that I’m told was much closer than the score line reflects seemed to come down the clutch finishing of the Tytans, in particular that of JT and the ever reliable Sammy J. Tytans took the win and kept their streak alive!
Final Score: Tytans 10 d. White Savages 3

Black Panthers vs Lairy Canaries

There is one thing Hugh Osborn likes less than losing: tying. In this game versus the never-ending bench of the Panthers, it looked like a chance for Mr. Ultimate and his Canaries to get one back. However, with James and Peter renewing their Blue Sharks days on the Panthers team, this turned out to be a tough assignment. With the engaged/doctor/all round great guy Peter putting on a Frisbee clinic, the Panthers held off the Canaries and the best efforts of Stephen Wyka and his magic headband.
Final Score: Black Panthers 8 d. Lairy Canaries 7

Hyper-Masculine Feminists vs Albino Rhinos

In another game for the colour blind, the red HMF took on the pink Rhinos. Undefeated to this point, yet somehow not on the top of the table, the Larson show hoped to carry on against the deepest cutter of them all, Rhinos captain Chris Ende. With star players Bevo and Ray Brigade on fire as usual, it looked to be one for all the feminists out there to celebrate. Although Godfrey did his best to distract the HMF with his ridiculously pink clothes, it was the Feminists who took it out.
Final Score: Hyper-Masculine Feminists 8 d. Albino Rhinos 1

Well that’s about it from me, with so many games going on during one night, I apologise for the Hugh Osborn-like essay of games descriptions! Until next week, happy throwing!

The Rain is Gone, So We Play On!!

Hey All :D,

At last the sun has come out and dried out our fields and we are good to go this Wednesday night.
As briefly mentioned last Wednesday night, this week and next weeks games will involve 2 x 75min time-capped games (or first to 10 points) in order to catch up with the league games missed.
I understand that this may seem like more work and fatigue players but when you consider most games we normally play don't finish till 930 or 10 this is pretty much the same in length of playing time.

We need everyone to be down at the fields by 7pm if not earlier so the games can start on time and not go too late.
The fees will stay at $40 for this semester, they will not go up and the prize of a pizza party is still in place for the first team to have all its players fees paid for.

The draw for this week is:

Round 1 (7.15pm to 8.30pm)
Field 1 - Disc Jockeys v Ginger Ninjas
Field 2 - Tye-Dye Another Day v White Savages
Field 3 - Black Panthers v Green Machine
Field 4 - Tytans v Albino Rhinos
Field 5 - Hyper-Masculine Feminists v Lairy Canaries

Round 2 (8.30pm to 945pm)
Field 1 - Disc Jockeys v Tye-Dye Another Day
Field 2 - Ginger Ninjas v Green Machine
Field 3 - White Savages v Tytans
Field 4 - Black Panthers v Lairy Canaries
Field 5 - Albino Rhinos v Hyper-Masculine Feminists

I know this semester has been a tough one because of the shitty weather but all looks good to round the remainder of the semester off with a bang and I encourage you all to foster your people to play this semester through and to have a fun time doing so.

Lots of Love,

Who can tell me how to make the columns wider?

Ok so I've pretty much been wondering how to make the writing space wider since we got this blog. Anyone done it before and want to let me in on the secret?

Thanks.

Round 3 Results

After a rained out Round 2, the draw skipped ahead to Round 3 match-ups once the sun returned which provided some well-matched games for teams to test their skills during their second game!

Black Panthers 13 d. Ginger Ninjas 12

Criegan's team looked strong on the night, partly due to their intimidating black outfit and partly due to their size. With most teams containing smaller numbers and far less subs, the Black Panthers were about 14-strong giving them a bit of a fitness advantage in the early weeks of semester. Though the Ginger Ninjas weren't undermanned themselves it still may have given that edge to tip out the Gingas...OR maybe it was purely due to newly engaged Peter gaining some extra strength from his recent marriage proposal! Congrats again!

Tytans 13 d. Lairy Canaries 12

A trade to give the White Savages a boost to their currently depleting leadership ranks, star player and Rookie of the Year from last Semester Damon, was traded for an absentee from the other team, resulting in a no-subs look for the males on Lairy Canaries. Matching up against the returning-player heavy side the Tytans, lead by Dave Dehollander and with Sammy J strengthening the girls, it seemed unfair, but results show it was tightly contested and the Lairies continually brought their deficit back to nearly take the game away from the Tytans. "Springs" otherwise known as Justin was a standout with a great aerial grab over both the tall Max and the sheer brute force and speed of Josh both from the Lairies, earning "Springs" his nickname from the Lairies for the rest of the game. Jacqui from the Lairies had a standout game for the girls scoring a number of goals during the game. The end point came from a relatively undefended run from Carlos and Dave on the final point after a gruelling 2 - 2.5 hour battle that was almost gifted to them by the tiring opposition squad. A scoober from Carlos to Dave sunk the the Lairies at the end.

Hyper-Masculine Feminists 13 d. Green Machine 8

The red team! What more to say. Lead by the controversial Mike Larson, this team will be an interesting one to watch throughout semester. Already informed by their captain to be prepared to receive no cheering if they make the finals, the Hyper-Masculine Feminists are not going to be an easy push-over with their high intolerance of the male race. Though losing a tidy pick-up in Owen with height and playing ability also to the White Savages, they are still surely going to find a way to the finals, or Mike Larson's name is not Mike Larson! The Green Machine this week were a little bit short on their experienced players with a couple of key ones missing, but still held on to go down fighting with a not too shabby 8 points.

White Savages 13 d. Disc Jockeys 3

The White Savages were almost a completely new look tonight with the addition of Damon and Owen and the return of Tim Roland to the field after some improvements to his crushed toe. Though they were another team with low numbers, this time there was strength in "low" numbers because of the experienced line they had available. A crushed toe was never going to be enough to stop Tim's return, his addiction to the sport and foolhardiness would surely get in the way of anything sensible like that! The Disc Jockeys seem to have had a rough night, only converting 3 points. The team they were playing however currently contains the three names above and Bobby currently who departed today on his around the word Adventure, but who in the following weeks is being replaced by the new recruits. Perhaps some good D points will return the drive to the Disc Jockeys next week after a slightly demoralising round against a tough opponent containing some competitive guys and girls...

Tie-Dye Another Day 13 d. Albino Rhinos 12

Perhaps they spent too long in the sun over the weekend but the Albino Rhinos just couldn't pull through with the win in this one, despite having a reasonably strong line up of returning players. Tie-Dye Another Day however may have found their one, two or quick give and go option in newly returned Damo who is quickly grasping the face pace of the game after not too long playing. The Albinos with ET threatening deep all night had Finny run ragged by the end and opting for the "I'm just gonna mark you deep every time" option.

Check out the previous post for your next match-ups! Cheers and see ya Wednesday!

Round 4 Draw

Hey all! Games for this week (30th March) are as follows:

Field 1 - Disc Jockeys (Blue) v Ginger Ninjas (Orange)
Field 2 - White Savages (White) v Tie Dye Another Day (Tie Dye)
Field 3 - Green Machine (Green) v Black Panthers (Black)
Field 4 - Albino Rhinos (Pink) v Tytans (Tie Dye)
Field 5 - Lairy Canaries (Yellow) v Hyper Masculine Feminists (Red)

Good luck teams! Don’t forget to bring water and anyone who wants to come!

Regionals Write-Up!

Queensland Regionals or to the non-frisbee initiated, Queensland State Championships, was held on the weekend of the 19th and 20th of March 2011 in Townsville, North Queensland. As we're aware this was the first time it was held in Townsville (or for that matter anywhere but Brisbane?) and we're pretty damn proud of that fact.

Here's a quick look at the teams in colour:

The Hosting Teams from Townsville

The Towns-Villains

The Quinns Strike Back

The Travelling teams

Firestorm (A + B) (Brisbane)

Axis of Awesome (Cairns Ultimate Disc)

Slamtown Flatball Club (Gold Coast)

We take our hats off to those who quickly moved on from it being held elsewhere than in Brisbane this year and made the trip up to return the favour to those of us up here and help grow the sport of Ultimate! The benefits of having having held Regionals in Townsville I think are enormous for the sport and the players up here. According to the Brisbane Blog this was the largest attended Regionals so far (84 players officially including 1 girl Alecha from Cairns. Unofficially 85 and 2 girls. Due to a sneak game played by Deanna from Townsville in the game against Cairns to give Alecha a break from D'ing up guys all day!), which probably would have happened had it been in Brisbane (and some more players moved their butts to take part), but what that really tells you is that there's a whole swag of people up here who want it just as bad! It doesn't tell you that almost entirely 2.5 - 3 teams of worth players of Townsville and Cairns stock took part in their very first Ultimate competition. Without Regionals here this wouldn't have happened, and these guys may never have had the chance to get a taste of the sport at a tournament nor have sought it out.

From a Townsville club perspective what this does for us is gives almost everyone in our club a taste for tournament level Ultimate which I think will only commit them further to the sport! So thank you again and hopefully this leads to you seeing some stronger teams from Townsville down your way and one from Cairns in not so long as well!

The Tournament began with the arrival of most players mid-Saturday morning. Most of them took the couple of hours free to walk down to Palmer St. and the Strand to grab a coffee and a bite to eat and then wandered back to the fields to relax and, if early enough, watch the end of the Tsv. vs. Tsv. game.

Games began with match-ups being against the nearest seeded team with the tightest game being the Axis of Awesome (Cairns) vs. The Quinns Strike Back (Townsville B) game with the Townsville gang going down by 1 point 12 - 11 to the mighty Axis of Awesome.

Not long after the first games most people realised that it was quite a warm day! Matt Anscomb stopped by to spectate which was quite a treat as one of the original founders and ex El Presidente's of Townsville Ultimate. He brought with him his favourite frisbee line "You gotta lay for those!" done in the pseudo accent of an American or something. Loved hearing it again as embarrassed as it makes me to know him!

Luckily, teams only had 3 games to play in the sun before a break for dinner, the AGM, and a meander across the road to the nighttime venue of the Sports Reserve. The damage to the Queens Park lights during the Cyclone turned out to be a blessing in disguise because 4 teams got to play on some extremely professional looking fields with a bit of grandstand action happening alongside the Firestorm vs. Slamtown match-up which added a second showcase game (including the final) to the tournament for players to watch.

From what I hear these Sports Reserve fields were great to play on, and from asking the layout master Stu, they also had enough give in them for the odd layout. A group of boarding school kids from the nearby Grammar School somehow had turned up, and Rob Trachter quickly got them involved and cheering loudly for Firestorm. By day 2 they'd come back for the finals and left with a signed Townsville disc from all their favourite Firestorm players (and this guy! after begging to sign it as well) which was great to see. Cairns and Firestorm Ignition battled it out silently on the neighbouring field but unfortunately for them most of the crowd were comfortable on the seats on their far side. End day 1 of tournament.

For most day one was a long day requiring recovery from the stress of the heat and humidity. Though playable, add to that a day of tournament games and most were ready to hit the hay. The obligatory "party" or drinking session in town was won most likely by TomSteve though, arguably and quite lamely if true, by Mansauce. Mansauce's only argument is that technically TomSteve had arrived too late and had missed the official party. Other than that pissweak claim I'm pretty sure he got trounced because he left town before TomSteve had even finished his warm-up predrinks. I personally brought out "the handler" to an adoring crowd and did a "body shot" (what a flaming woman-lie) off the forearm!?!? of a promo girl before the free lift home claimed me and stripped hopes of the title clean out of my grasp.

Day 2 began with brekkie in the shade and the final rounds needing to be played out. The final round for Slamtown and Firestorm Ignition was converted, to avoid two identical match ups in the dessicating heat, to their semi-final playoff. Slamtown were not the disciplined machine of their game against Firestorm A and were looking rather seedy from whatever happened at the Hotel Allen the night before.

The Villains realised their place in the pecking order when sizing up Firestorm and decided to save their strength too for their semi-final against the loser of that game, Slamtown, to try to garner the final spot on offer for Nationals. Axis of Awesome and The Quinns Strike Back squared off for their big bout, a meaningful one to both teams as they were fairly evenly matched with Cairns taking it.

In the 3rd/4th playoff The Villains this year just lacked a few key bits of strength as well as some experience with many freshly new to the ranks. Slamtown seediness aside they were now just buggered from the heat but they took the game in their stride following against the fresh Townsville team and just worked hard out there to push themselves through for the win. With Donnie mentioning in the huddle that this was the hottest game he'd played in his many years of playing including that hot regionals in Brisbane in 2007. The high humidity pretty unique to up here but still something all the Queensland teams dealt with well!

It was the two Firestorm teams who were warmed up and ready to go as the Butcher on Bundock's sausages cooked away (they were good) and fruit salad was slurped down. With the division of ability between the two teams having been decided already back in Brisbane it was a concern that we wouldn't get our money's worth. That was quickly proven wrong with a very competitive display from both teams and there was no telling them apart on their desire to win. Firestorm A got the win in the end to take out the tournament but both teams were happily through to a home Australian Nationals which is a great result! Thanks to all the teams and helpers who made the tournament possible - you know who you are!!!

Round 1 Results! Semester 1, 2011

Round 1 results.

We're gradually working our way out of a write-up deficit here and are now back to being only 2 weeks behind!

After 2 weeks of practise games we were ready to begin the league and break up into teams. Games were a hard slog both physically and mentally as there's plenty to learn on both fronts. Nothing is definite in the league at this stage that's for sure. The biggest factor MOTIVATION is yet to be defined by each team! Good luck!

Here are the results.

Albino Rhinos (Pink) 11 def Disc Jockeys (Blue) 5

Hyper Masculine Feminists 12 def Black Panthers (Black) 8

Lairy Canaries 12 def White Savages 9

Ultimate Frisbee Pub Crawl Semester 1, 2011, Video Recap By Amy

In the absence of a post-pub crawl write-up, the addition of Amy Broman's summary video may serve to jog the memory of those in attendance and record some of fine history of the classy establishment that is Townsville Ultimate Disc.

*It should be noted that the video features stupid homo "Penis Straws" and that though peer pressure attempted to force two indecent offenses from one unlucky "pub goer" he was almost able to outwit them completely. The first was to drink through a plastic penis, the second was to consume beer through a straw. Thankfully through pure genius and to the uproar of the crowd said pub goer was able to outsmart them by flipping the straw upside-down and drinking through the bottom, therefore avoiding the penis end. On the second note, attempts to drink around the straw did not satisfy the crowds, so this act of beer blasphemy had to fail in order to avoid the first offense.

Let's Raise for "Raze for Ray"

The brainchild of a hopped-up Adam Nelson at his girlfriend's going-away party "Raze for Ray" is basically what we've all been thinking about, without knowing how to express it. Not only will we remove his "pride and joy" but as a reward for his participation we'll also be giving Ray his first non-button up t-shirt - with a Villains Logo (this may require a uniform order in the near future)!

Raymond Everest aka Ray Brigade has been with the club for just over a year now, a softly spoken young cub who's nearing the time to make his first kill. We hope that by offering a helping hand we'll see him tackle a zebra or something. Over that year he has flaunted a flair for a particular style, Raywear, and has naught been seen in anything but (including while exercising) a shirt with buttons, usually of some hushed-tones in a hawaiian design and a seedy paedophile-esque/jaunty cop moustache. We here believe he's too young for rocking either of those looks and that the moustache should be reserved for a later time in life perhaps when he's married and needs to throw some spice into the relationship. We don't doubt the mo's capability for that.

"Raze for Ray" the catchy warcry for our bid to free Ray of his own self-sacrificial facial hair with many-fold rewards for Ray, but which will provide some relief for each of us AND ADDITIONALLY donate some money to the Leukaemia Foundation. Please donate generously so that we as a whole RAISE (money and awareness) for "Raze for Ray". RAISE FOR "RAZE FOR RAY"!

The mo' blow, where we cut that shit off, will take place at the pub crawl pre-drinks which will be at the Geo Sciences Courtyard (near building 17) this Saturday from 5:30 - 7pm.

"Ray Brigade": Note the mo and presence
of buttons.

Artist's impression: "Ray Brigade"
after the Mo' is Go' (slang for gone).

PLEASE BRING: Your own massive donation and a sense of pride as we watch this enormous event unfold, as well as lungs capable of chanting "Raze for Ray!". All the money we raise for Ray will be donated by him to the organisation "Shave for a Cure", the father organisation to "Raze for Ray" who had their World's Greatest Shave day last week. Ours will be this Saturday.

Hugh gets internet for first time in over a year, Regionals write up to come

Unfortunately there is very little internet coverage in the area in which I live and my housemate whose parents own the house are slowly making progress on this one to get me internets. Along with this lack of home internet, uni commitments and increased responsibilities within the club have meant that I don't have access to as much spare internet time as I'd like to have for the blog. To improve this Criegan/ "Gibbo" who has introduced himself has been recruited to write-up the weekly games, meaning both James and I will have more opportunity to post other material.

Regionals which was now already 2 weeks ago is one of the most important events not yet recorded on the blog. Tonight I hope to slip past the wary eye of my housemate and access her USB stick internet for long enough to complete a writeup of this major Queensland Ultimate event. Sorry for the delay...

Welcome!

To new members: Welcome J

To old members: Welcome back!

I trust that you guys all had great holidays and made it through the Cyclone OK, with $1000 to compensate for your “emotional grief” that you suffered through it. A new Frisbee season is upon us! I am your host, Criegan Gibson and I’ll be updating this blog from time to time with info on tournaments, league scores and timetables, and most importantly; the pub crawl date and time! And now to the bread and butter of the matter…

On the 23rd of February (last Wednesday), our first Ultimate Frisbee session was held on the JCU AFL Fields kicked off at 7:00pm. It was an excellent turnout with a lot of fresh faces, both local and international. It’s good to see new people down on the fields; Frisbee is a great way to meet a lot of fun and friendly people as well as getting in shape. The parties held are the absolute best, and the camaraderie is second to none. If you haven’t attended any Frisbee sessions yet, that’s perfectly fine. We have another Ultimate Frisbee session running from 7:00pm onwards on the 2nd March. You don’t have to worry about paying anything as this session is free! We are still just helping people getting into the groove of things, such as teaching how to throw, positioning, etc. So whether you’re a green-horn or a rugged veteran, come down and introduce yourself!

Oh, and not to forget, Frisbee is also held on Sundays down at Queens Park near the strand at around 4:00pm. It’s basically just a training session at a relaxed pace to help get you into the rhythm of things. If you want to keep in contact via FaceBook, just join this group.

See you on the field!

Social Frisbee League First Night!

The first night of our Semester 1, 2011 Season is about to begin. If you're unaware of the details this is a social league and it's a mixed sport! The first few nights will introduce everyone to the sport and teach you some of the skills. Bring as many friends down as you like, the more the merrier, everyone will be new to the sport so you're in the same boat! Once again we're looking to fill the fields with many teams!

It will be held on Wednesday the 23rd of Feb at 7pm, which is during week 1 of uni. The fields are the AFL fields which are located near George Roberts College and the swimming pool.
Once we're all settled into things we also have our awesome pub crawl to look forward to, which was a messy yet successful affair last semester! I personally can't wait!

Thanks and we're looking forward to another great semester with everyone! See you at the fields!

Queensland Regionals 2011

Hey there southern ultimate players of Queensland (oh and Cairns too if you're about) - welcome to 2011 and an invitation to a very first Northern Queensland regionals! This will just be an introductory note about regionals. I hope that everyone is coping ok with the massive floods. I'm pleased to report that tropical Townsville has received no such flooding, though the region has had its share of rain this wet season.

If you need to dry your feet and weren't already coming to Townsville for Regionals on the 19th and 20th of Feb I'd like you to sign up for the event! There will be plenty of teams who would welcome extra players, we'll have a Cairns team taking part for the first time lead by Corey and I believe JdR who may welcome an extra pair of legs, as well as 2 Townsville teams with Tsv 2 welcoming more players and I'm going call it and say Dusty and the gang will be around too! So there it is, plenty of pick-up options. Contact me at one of the below emails if you'd like to find out more, or sign-up on AFDA to the team "Players looking a team" and we'll sort you out from there. A combo team of Townsville/Cairns/Brisbane would be like the lovechild of some attractive celebrity extra-marital coupling such as a Brad Pitt and Miranda Kerr slip-up with genes somehow getting in from Mansauce (via IVF for this guy probs), it would be almost too perfect except for the Mansauce aspects(I have heard of a condition on "weird or what" where 2 eggs are fertilised and merged into one leaving a person with 2 sets of DNA - theirs and their twin's, so it would be plausible to have this 3 way gene set occur). Talk to your fellow players and look into getting a couple of keen people together, the rest will be easy.

Due to the well known fact that it can be quite rainy at this time of year we have gone to the liberty of pencilling in a few different field bookings to ensure we have somewhere to play if one lot of fields becomes too wet or whatever it may be. At the moment our primary field choice (yet to be decided)is Queens Park which is close to the strand and always lush. If you have the energy after the tournament from here you can walk the hill with all the other die hard fitness freaks or wander down to the strand to cool off.

For those who aren't aware the competition has been registered on AFDA now since at least October. We understand that team selections are still taking place but if you're sure that your team will be coming up Captains, please go ahead and register your team. This will help speed up some aspects of organising for us. And don't forget to register yourself if you need a team.

If you'd like accommodation make it known by filling out your details on this spreadsheet. Let me know if it doesn't work. And don't forget to say the same thing on the AFDA rego. The earlier the better.

We can be contacted via our club email address:-townsvilleultimate at gmail. com or personally if you wish to contact hugh:-hughosborn at hotmail. com and mike:-mikelarson2 at gmail. com.

Further details regarding costs, making payments etc are still to come. Most details will be posted here until more players are registered to the tournament, so keep a look out.

Thanks and we look forward to your visit!
