Round 5 Preview...
Field 1:
Rojo Raptures v Mad Hatters
Good strong game, will come down to possession and handling. The trick to this contest is making sure Bob’s throws are accurate and the return of Bobby Jackson is waiting. With Ellie running around, the Mad Hatters might be on target for an upset if they are up to the task.
Field 2:
Purple Cobras v Blue Sharks
This game will come down to sheer speed and agility. With the likes of Dane West and Peter Roach on the same field, grass is bound to be torn up. Will be interesting to see how each team plays their offence and defence. Will be worth watching.
Field 3:
A Knife in the Dark v Tie Dye Hards
The Tie Dye Hards are coming into this contest as heavy favourites as they are the only undefeated team in the competition. With the aerial capabilities of both captains, the game will come down to handling abilities and being able to spot the right pass at the right time. Will be a great match up.
Field 4:
Ogres v Yellow Snow
With team Yellow Snow heavily developing and keen to get revenge from a half time slump from the previous week, their players will be looking to “carve up” (for you Paula) on the Frisbee field. However, with the Ogres on a little bit of a roll, they will be keen to get another win on their belt. They will not let slide easily. This game will simply come down to who wants it more. Good old fashion grit and determination.
Round 4 Results
The games started of with the Blue Sharks taking on Yellow Snow. With Yellow Snow taking the half 7-5 fairly convincingly and Zane getting injured, the Sharks knew that had to work something out. With James returning from injury, he grabbed a quick fire 7 points over Deanna’s 3 and turned the game up-side down. Sharks taking the victory an 8-1 point turn around. 13-8.
Blue Sharks MVP
Peter & Deanna
Yellow Snow MVP
Shelby & Paula
A Knife in the dark took on Rojo Raptures on field 1 as the best in the sky came together. With Hugh and Mike’s aerial battles, it was hard to see what was going on. However it was Rojo Raptures who came out on top 13-7.
Rojo Raptures MVP
Nick P & Eilidah
AKITD MVP
Hugh & Amy
The Tie Dye Hard went up against the Mad Hatters, and it was the undefeated versus the defeated. As Bob tried incredibly hard to end the streak, it was to no avail as the Tie Die Hards strangled them to defeat. Tie Dye Hards remaining undefeated with a convincing 13-6 win.
Tie Dye Hards MVP
Finny & Lisa
Mad Hatters
Matt & Ellie
Finally, the Purple Cobras took on the Ogres. With the Ogres taking control of the game early, the Purple Cobras found it hard to keep up. However, with Sam Jones playing hard, it was always going to be a long contest. Ogres up 13-5
Purple Cobras MVP
JC & Sam Jones
Ogres MVP
Carlos & Echo
After this week, MVP’s will know be unknown with the exception of The Townsville Villain, as the awards will be unknown until finals night. Be sure to be there!

Round 3
Round 3 - By new blogger The Decoy.
Hot on the heels of a scorching Round 2, Round 3 promised hard fought, intense games. With everyone now schooled in the art of ‘disc’, Round 3 certainly delivered on its promises, bringing a new level of play to Townsville Ultimate. As ever, a great turn out and unquenchable team spirits brought out the best in all the teams, and each game was a spectacle in its own right.
Field One saw the Rojo Raptures make war against the Ogres. With both teams coming off victories in Round 2, it was obvious they were both keen to keep their streak going. Despite some excellent support play, and consistent determination, the Raptures proved too nimble for the Ogres to crush. For their part, the Rojo Raptures made excellent use of their handlers, and were able to exploit the pinpoint accuracy of their throws to great effect. A decisive 13-3 victory to the Rojo Raptures over the Ogres.
Rojo Raptures MVP:
Nick & Monica
The Ogres MVP:
Carlos & Echo
On Field 2, A Knife In The Dark brought their best to bear against the mighty Purple Cobras. Brandishing the blade quickly, AKITD tore ahead with a series of quick points. Not to be shanked so easily, the Cobras deflected the Knives’ thrust, leading from half 7-6. Despite rallying around a rousing warcry, and a late game comeback, AKITD was unable to match the Purple Cobras’ lightning fast and deadly accurate short throwing game. A hard fought, but well-deserved 13-11 win to the Purple Cobras over A Knife In The Dark.
Purple Cobras MVP:
Dane ‘Guy-in-Yellow-Shorts’ West & CaitlinA Knife In The Dark MVP:
Aaron Patterson & Amy
Meanwhile… Field 3 saw the Tie Die Hards pitted against the Blue Sharks. With Sharks’ co-captain James David out for this round, the Tie Die Hards may have come to the game expecting a walk through the park, or perhaps, a safe stroll into the sea? Alas, no! Well, not entirely. The Blue Sharks gave a good showing, not letting the Tie Die Hards blow them away, but unfortunately went down to a cohesive and coordinated team. Tie Die Hards de-finned the Blue Sharks 13-8, despite the best efforts of MVPs Deanna Finn (heh, get it?) and Peter.
Tie Die Hards MVPS:
Finny, Cooper & Lisa
Blue Sharks MVPS:
Peter & Deanna
And all this time, Field 4 was witness to the effervescence (try saying that holding your tongue!) of 7-Up against Bob’s Team’s err… unpunability… A spirited bunch, that Bob’s Team. Despite being down a man, Bob’s Team managed to give a good showing to the lustrous 7-Up, not letting them run away with the game. Not quite a seven-up victory, the win does indeed go 13-7, to 7-Up, over Bob’s Team.
7-Up MVP:
Ian & Sarah C
Bob’s Team MVP:
Matt & Ellie
And so ends Round 3… The landscape of the teams shifts again, but always remains subject to change. With victories won, and lessons learned, it’s important to hold tight to that team spirit. Ever elusive to define, it’s team spirit that keeps us fighting on when the score looks grim, and a comeback seems nigh impossible. Stick together, teach each other terms, and practice throws together! Being able to trust each other on the field is what separates a great team from a good team.

Round 3 Preview..
On Field 1 we have the Rojo Raptures facing The Ogres. After both teams are coming of hard fought wins from the previous week, both teams will have their confidence levels sky high. The game will come down to the control of the disc and The Ogres must play their game and not get carried away with playing Mikes game if they would like their winning streak to continue.
On Field 2 we have the Purple Cobras coming up against A knife in the dark. With Hugh in unfamiliar territory with wins at the start of the season, he will be looking to keep the wins flowing up against the Purple Cobras. However, with the Purple Cobras improving at a spectacular rate, Hugh’s hands will be full with the task.
On Field 3 we have the Blue Sharks facing off against the Tie Dye Hards. With one of the Captains out injured the on field duties will remain solely on Zane’s shoulders for the entirety of the match. However, with Peter stepping up in the deep, the Blue Sharks will be fine without James. However with Finny stepping onto the field and getting familiarized with his captain’s job, he will be hard to stop. This game will be a thriller.
Finally on Field 4 we have Bob’s team coming up against 7-Up. Bob’s team has just come off a narrow loss in universal point from the previous week, and are looking for redemption from the Frisbee gods. However, with Shelby and co. on the other side of the field, their task will come down to precision passing, careful cuts and patience with the disc.
All games this week are looking great and I can’t wait to see each team go at it! Play hard!
The Townsville Villain.
Round 2
On Field One was the clash of the Americans. Mike Larson and Shelby Jones. After Shelby’s MVP efforts in the previous week Mike had some work to do. However, with Mike’s ability to turn a game upside down, that is what he did. Controlling the game with his throws, Mike slowly found confidence in his players and his abilities to exploit every strength in every player in his team was put on show. A tight game right to the end, finishing with a courageous win to Rojo Raptures 13 to 11 over 7-Up.
Rojo Raptures MVP:
Mike & Melana
7-Up MVP:
Johannes & Paula
On Field 2 was The Tie Dye Hards v The Purple Cobras. With handlers like Lisa and Cooper it was always going to be a hard task for The Purple Cobras, however as proved in the score line, the game was no pushover. The highlight of the game was definitely watching Finny one on one with Dane West, in the ultimate battle of aerial and speed skills. The duel lasted all night and it was great to see both players having fun whilst being competitive. Great game of Ultimate, and both teams will be looking forward to their next games coming up.
Tie Dye Hards MVP:
Cooper & Lisa
Purple Cobras MVP:
Sam Jones & JC
On Field 3 The Blue Sharks faced off against Knife in the Dark. With Simon following Hugh for the second successive week, AKITD was looking to be a good side. However, it was the Blue Sharks who took the half 7-3. With a power speech from the captain, AKITD came out with a different outlook and began to turn the tables. However, one could say that their courageous captain Hugh Osborne took out opposing Captain James David in a very suspicious bid. With that being said, AKITD squared it up at 10-10 and it came down to the last few points. As each point seemed forever, AKITD took it out in a thriller 13-11 over the Blue Sharks.
Blue Sharks MVP:
James & Deanna
A Knife in the Dark MVP:
Hugh & Heidi
In the last game on Field 4, it was the clash of the big D’s. In Duncan the Midget Webley and well... Bob. With Dave working on controlling the disc and working around patience, the tactic seemed to be working in the first half. However, the big man was just getting warmed up. Firing up his troops, he found gaps on the field and managed to get the Ogres over the line in Universal Point. 13-12.
The Ogres MVP:
Michael & Ellie
Dave’s Team MVP:
Mark Genge & Echo.
With Round 2 over, its time to look towards Round 3. Keeping in mind that a lot of the beginners in the league have picked up the disc for the first time 3 weeks ago. It is important not to rush into too much of the technical side of the game as it may drive many future potential players away from this great game. Also, it is imperative to keep team spirit as this is one of our best seasons and that these preliminary rounds are not about winning, instead about making sure players stay. Encourage beginners and girls to catch and call for the disc, as they are the future of the sport.
Happy Throwing!
The Townsville Villain.

Townsville on AFDA
http://www.afda.com/trashtalk/showarticle.php?articleid=770
Hey der, I heeryoo went on the Skying Fligh Pub Crawl!!! A memoir of the Sky High Pub Crawl...
Whoa! All I can say is I’ve lost my Pub Crawl virginity in the right way at the right time!!! There’s no way any other pub crawl or meagre night could have topped that!!! If that is my only ever pub crawl I will still die happy with my efforts. I doubt it will be my last though.
The night began with the red-carpetesque arrival of everyone to Campus throughout the next hour, as each person entered heads turned to see who’d outdone whom in the costume stakes. Names were ticked off, green armbands were given and trusty goon-punch cups thrust into the awaiting hands with directions toward the large vessel holding each arrivee’s fate for the evening. The barbecue was tightly manned. There was a bevy of girls with delicate wings affixed to their fairy costumes, well-trimmed commercial pilots with aviators masking their features and scruffy air force pilots in jumpsuits. There were also cute ghosts, bees, ladybeetles, a pyjama-clad sand(wo)man, hippies. A superhero theme – a bat(wo)man and a Captain Finny. Iceman from TopGun joined the dogfight. A couple of Buzz Lightyears were unpacked. There were some questionables such as a double rainbow, which was “starting to look like a triple rainbow” as the night progressed. A white haired white eyed guy freaked everyone out but still we didn’t know. Penguins - WTF mate!? I like, I like. There was also some culture a famous cartoon character from
And so began the party! The copious amounts of goon-punch provided received some early and surprised compliments before some minor ingredients ran out and taste-buds lacked to tell the difference. “10 minutes till bus, drink up” was announced just as the 30L container was once again topped up with another 3 or 4 few casks of goon and a splash (bottle) of Rumba! Five minutes later it was almost all gone!
First stop Riverview Tavern! Feeling seedy already but we got stuck into the jugs and shots here! Loud chanting of names this week not allowed “
Let’s go! Next stop, I have no idea where! 60 odd people on a bus once again traveling blind, darkness outside the bus and intoxication inside the head! I do believe we made our way to
Another great part of the night spent as we head out to await the bus after finishing up the stint here. Bus delays, WTF all you had to do was wait there for us, where did you go bus/bus driver? The double rainbow idea is now starting to feel a bit more like a Gay Jesus than a triple rainbow as I made a final return to the pub smoking area alone to scan for lost Frisbee players. The derogatory thought had been implanted by Dave only hours earlier and it had seeped its way in.
Again the bus. Spirits are very VERY high. I’m not sure but I bet it was jostling inside this thing as we made our way. Complete blackness outside the bright lights inside. Nothing suss going on in the bus or so we thought, but once again, where are we? Townsville has finally appeared like a large city and made us feel lost. We arrive at Unknown Destination Number 3! Everyone has climbed off and is almost inside when I follow TopGun back having heard that somehow a magical spew has appeared. The night has claimed its first victim. Upon returning the magical spew has vanished. The bus driver has redeemed himself, and also run out of rags. Hooray! I get to keep both my rainbows…this time!
“Venue 3” is a great place to hit after the first few. If I hadn’t known better I would have guessed we’d left Townsville, because I was at a pub I’d never been to. This is like a cheap holiday! Get real drunk, drive around in the dark and forget you’re still in Townsville. The lighting inside is getting darker. It’s working hand-in-hand with an increase in blood-alcohol level. Lots more dancing and silly stuff. Party looking “
Bus….Sketchy bits again….
We’re in town on the bus still! Outside Flynn’s. Here’s familiar territory! And with familiar territory comes the decision I’d been dreading. Do I need to don a t-shirt and remove my gay jesus costume to appeal to the bouncers, the spear poking Romans of Towntown or should I risk persecution for the cause that I embody? People start slapping me on the bare skin of my back. Perhaps as they walk past to exit the bus, or perhaps just because they’re sadisic. Then it gets harder. They’ve started using the wooden spoons from
I hope everyone had not just a great night, but one of the best nights of their year so far! Thanks to everyone who helped out in some way and particularly to Sam and Sarah for their efforts in organising such a memorable event (we know there’s something good to remember, we just don’t know the details)!

Round 2 Preview...
On field One, Mr. America will come up against his fellow country man in Shelby Jones. Shelby will be looking to maintain his red hot form from last round with his MVP efforts proving to be the difference in the teams. However, Mike who has hardly seen a loss on his career belt has started off the season slow with a very convincing loss to Team Finny. Mike will be looking to dominate the game and developing each player. Townsville Villain Prediction: Shelby to continue with his dominance with help from impact player Ashley O’Sullivan to take the victory in a thriller, 13-10.
On field two we have Team Finny coming up against Sam Jones and Chris Ende. Finny will be looking to use Cooper as a strike player with Rob handling, this will put him in an awesome deep cutting position to hopefully get his team over the line. However, team Sam is no push over, with strong girls on their team, possession will be strong. In addition, MVP from round 1, Matty Hamilton will be looking to touch the disc every second throw and with Dane West making an appearance, Finny might find it hard to find disc in the end zone. This game is looking to be a ripper. Villain predicts Team Finny to take it, 13-7.
One field 3, we have the league leaders, the Blue Sharks coming up against ‘A knife in the dark’. After clutching a sudden death victory from Round 1, AKITD will be looking get off to a solid start. With Hugh and Aaron running amok, AKITD will have no trouble finding speed around the field. However with James and Peter marking, they will make their lives hell. The game will come down to long points, pin point throws and clever cutting. The Villain predicts the Blue Sharks to take the victory 13-8.
Last but not least on field 4 we have Team DeHollander coming up against The Ogres. With both teams coming of losses in the previous week both will be looking to get off to a good start and focus on playing defensive. However, team DeHollander holds the key to the victory through specialist strike player Ray ‘Brigade’ Everest. With Ray sporting his brand new footy boots, he will be looking to break ankles all over the field. Townsville Villain predicts Team DeHollander to take the victory 13-9.
Tonight will be cold with field one being very muddy. It is wise to invest in a pair of football boots, a water bottle and maybe a jumper if need be. Be sure to turn up early for your team for some much needed warm up and pre game tactics. Good luck to all teams!!

Round 1 Results
As the large clump of people were split into 8 even teams, the variety of different faces became obvious. With each team stacked almost evenly, the smell of a great season was present. Moderate wind and heavy rain the previous day meant for a hard day at the office for many handlers, and many beginners stood tall. Round One is where each player must first associate themselves with their team and then work on individual brilliance, as team bondage is a must in the game of Ultimate. With eight captains all hungry for a championship, it seemed every one of them felt that this was their semester, and that this was their team that would lead them to victory. Only time will tell...
The familiar sights and sound of the Blue Sharks were spilled onto Field number 3, with the echoing sounds of “du du du du du” playing a major role in phyching out the opponents. However, with Duncan standing tall (no pun intended), ‘The Ogres’ were not going to be pushed over easily. After 2 quick points against the Sharks, the Ogres looked content, however, with the handling skills of Ben and Ricki, the game turned into a blow over with long points dominating play. Blue Sharks winners 13 to 5.
Blue Sharks MVP:
Ben Prior & Martina.
The Ogres MVP:
Echo & Michael Macon
Shelby was placed with the arguous task of not only playing on Australian soil, but being in charge of 13 keen ultimate players. But, as witness, leadership was an attribute that Shelby did possess. With his calm handling and pin point accurate throws, Shelby took the game out of the other teams reach and led them to a tight fought victory over Sam and Chris’ Team. Paula was ok too I guess... With teams just getting to know each other, Sam’s team will prove to be a jaggernaught of a team to play later on in the season. 7-Up winners 13 to 7
7-Up MVP:
Shelby & Paula
Chris’ team MVP:
Sam Jones & Matt Hamilton
It was Mr. America v Flying Finny. The grudge match of the century where the most experienced captain on the field came up against the least experienced. In a game of control and speed, it was a surprise not to see Mr. America take control and completely dominate the game with his high release flicks. However, it was a game of beginners are Team finny got the better of Team Red and took home the victory in a blow out. Team Finny up 13 to 6.
Team Red MVP:
Cooper
Team Finny MVP:
Cameron
With a new season, Hugh had something to prove and went out onto the field with one objective. Win a game. However, with Dave playing this was not going to be an easy task. As Dave has been preached as one of the best teachers of the game, his beginners were always going to have the advantage, and with Simon floating, the game was always going to be interesting. As one team raced out to a significant lead, the other pulled it back to even it up at 12-12. Right at this point, the lights went out, only to further insult the White team when a snatch was made in the in goal. A Knife in the Dark finally coming up first round winners. Close game and a very awesome finish. Keep it up!
A Knife in the Dark MVP:
Damon & Amy
Team White MVP:
Eddie & Ashleigh
Being the first time in history to have 8 teams, this proves that Ultimate is ever expanding and further proving that the great game of Ultimate is getting publicity. Each team is adapting very well and each beginner is picking up the game incredibly fast. For those who are keen practice throws, investing in a disc is the best move you can make. See Simon Urqhuart with $20 and he will hook you up.
Hope to see you all next week.
The Townsville Villain.
Semester 2, 2010
Ah, the long awaited start to the Frisbee season has finally paid off. After countless Sunday sessions of preparing our bodies for the arduous task of playing 90 minute games we have realised that we are all still unfit, with the exception of a few of course. This season has turned out to be the biggest yet, with 8 teams managing to be made with an even amount of subs. Numbers have been counted to range from anywhere between 80 and 100 and we are hoping that this remains consistent throughout the season.
The club has also expanded internally as jobs were delegated to those who were nominated. Positions are as follows:
Presidents: Hugh Osborn(e) and Duncan Webley (and Simon until he leaves)
League Co-ordinators: Mike Larson and James David
Equipment Manager: Dave DeHollander (Bob)
Fundraising and Advertising: Sam Morgan, Sarah Caitlin and Sam Jones
Treasurer: Zane Quinn*
Secretary: Chris Ende*
