Is Our Glass Half Empty or Half Full?

Facebook will soon be able to showcase “On this day in 2011” in 2012. And when you are all snuggled up in your warm beds, halfway around the world once more, you will read about how this week in frisbee was a definite game changer. On Wednesday, September 7th, 2011 the world of frisbee was turned upside down and counter-clockwise. On this day every team gave it their all and learned valuable lessons about their teams and themselves.

First up!
RedBalls vs Spastic Spunk
13-9 to RedBalls

This was an intense game where both teams gave tremendous efforts, going toe to toe for some ridiculously long points, and for bragging rights of climbing the ladder of Sparkles’ power rankings. The Spunk were all over the balls scoring the first 2 points of the match with some epic zone play early in the game. This almost seemed to have “tipped” the pace of the game in favour of the Spunk, however, the RedBalls quickly found a way to adapt to their nasty swings and fought back with cocaine-fueled vengeance, and thus taking half. From the second half we saw the Balls build on their lead with patient handling and precision catches. It looked like the Spunk were reaching for the domers at 9-5, but a second wind hit and the spunk started coming back for sloppy seconds. They creatively put 3 points on in succession (the natural hat trick-that was for you North America!) thanks to some sick D's! The Redballs reached for the lube at 11-9 and scored the final 2 points to come out on top! Games like these remind me why I love this Sport. It was another fantastic game with everything ultimate frisbee is all about, arguments over rules, heckling, hard running, sick D's, incredible grabs, hammers and ofc spirit!

Clockwork Orange vs Dye Fast Tie Furious
Orange by a hair: 13-12

“Hickory dickory doc. I’ve seemed to have lost my spot. I went for the disc, fucked up my wrist, and now I drink a lot.”

Captain Timmy was again out of commission during this game so it was up to Carlos and Josh Fuller to step up their game and impart some wisdom on the ladies of Orange. This game was a battle that mirrored a war amongst the Greek gods. Captain Finny was looking to mimic Ares, God of War, by blanketing his bed with the skins of the players he has destroyed. However as we will come to read, it was Clockwork Orange who began the physicality in brutal fashion. This game was dead tight the whole way and provided us with some background on the defense of both teams. There was an example of “double happiness”, where you cause the defensive stop and then score on the next play. Locked at 12-12 with the stall count at 8, Zane let go of a fully throttled huck aiming for the end zone only to have Catherine Dehollander in the cup, jump in the air and block it. Although in pain, she went straight to the end zone and caught the winning pass! I think two Dehollanders is enough. Who brought the third? Teamwork between TJ Kelly and Josh Fuller allowed for Finny to cease any physical activity for a while. Carlos Castro (Achilles) gave Ephraim Hofsäß a black eye! It’s Hofsäß, not Hector. This game Lasted till lights out with a final score of 13-12. The Tye Dye’s cup was absolutely amazing in defense.

Green Lanterns vs. Dark Matter
Lanterns’ will power unites for a 13-8 victory

Yes, you are reading this correctly. With a limited amount of male players on the Dark Matter team and an over abundance of energy from the Lanterns, the Gods of Frisbee decided to mix up the power rankings in a big way. It was the darkest of nights and there were many who have been worshiping the Matter’s might, myself included. Yet in those times of distress, the power of the green rings came together and gave it everything they could. There is always the undying factor that any team Larson steps onto will gain a slight advantage. And to say that Larson’s help was the cause for victory would be a grave, underrated assumption. However, it was not the main source of victory for the Green team. After numerous follies in positioning, increased turnovers, and injuries, the Lanterns showcased their heart and soul and put on a cutting clinic. The Big 3 (A-O Suv, Air David, and Rebel Luke) were ran ragged and soon began to tire. Since most of the team participates in Ryan Miller’s PARKFIT, we can see where all the endurance and strength come from. Green quickly took the first three points before handing them back to Dark Matter’s determination and technical prowess to tie the game. The first half went back and forth with incredible moves and cuts from James, as well as the ever unstoppable rebel without a cause, Luke McClellan. Vega and Mitch from the Lanterns were able to break free from their defensive counterparts and go long for Larson and Peter’s hucks. Un-renounced to both teams, Sokolowski was able to gain a couple steps on both Luke and Nick during deep routes. His speed was however, rivaled not by his hands, and the disc was dropped on two occasions in the endzone, which could have made the game go by faster. What Vega and Mitch missed in points they got back in assists and defensive might. Ashley was a pure handler for the Matter coaching players to certain destinations and comfortably putting the disc in their hands. Turnovers were the reasons for loss. Matter simply made more than the Lanterns. Fabian has been showing real promise and advancement in skill. Look out for him. His learning curve is incredibly vertical, much like himself.

Lascivious Ladyfingers vs The Birds
Yellow Sex toys take it: 13-8

It was an unexpectedly tough defensive point that started the game for the Ladyfingers with Birds maintaining the majority of the possession. The Birds couldn't seem to convert during the first half due to a bunch of hail mary type throws ending up on the ground in the endzone. However, the arrival of Dane gave them a much needed confidence boost and they managed a revival getting a few more points on the board. In conjunction with this, the Ladyfingers' defense and force broke down giving way to easy points. At 6 a piece before half, a yellow timeout was called to break the run. During the break Hugh pressed about communication on the field and importance of the force. This and a much needed rest seemed to do the trick and got them out of their rut. They upped the intensity coming into the second half, timing on cuts (which improved substantially) with Jeanette, who often provided the first open cuts from the stack! The Cody and Damon handling duo worked well together and were hard to defend. Sanne decided to take on the role of the deep receiver providing a small (literally) distraction when Hugh went up for a couple of high catches. She was very close to getting squashed. Timo discovered a new love of laying-out with some epic explosive displays to clean up swilly hucks from Hugh. Janice was cleaning up a lot of stray throws on field which saved potential embarrassment for the thrower a couple of times. Claire, from the Birds, showed how to make plenty of great cuts to provide offensive movement for her team and got a few good run through defensive swats.
With the Ladyfingers managing to stay a few points up on the Birds throughout, even the arrival of the cavalry, in the form of Mark ‘F-truck’ Franich and Dane ‘Dirty Trampy Whore’ West, wasn’t enough to bring down the Hugh-Rob-Genge handling machine. Despite bringing the game to a draw, the Birds lost half-time to the Ladyfingers, with the Ladyfingers stepping it up after half to bring it home.

So that was the goings on here in the land of Oz. Soon we will be treated with the ever important “Australia vs The World” game during lecture recess. All are encouraged to participate and join in on what will definitely be the most competitive game of the season. Seriously, it gets real up in this bitch. All of your nice Aussie teammates will quickly revert to evil eyes and devilish smiles. We can combat this with World power, cool pump up songs, and an array of multi coloured flags to trance them in a daze as we run up the score.

I had an assignment to finish so I’ll try and get the Part 3 movie up tonight.

Keep fit and have fun,
The Man With the Dragon Tattoo
