One thing is for sure, this hangover knows no bounds. So after a great Friday night, and an incredibly sore and laughter filled Saturday, the frisbree crew have taken the fields and exercised their right to enjoy this Australian winter as it now comes to a close. If you really even want to call it winter. Spring is in the air and so are the discs, but this time Mother Nature had given us all a test. It was the test of patience and fortitude to ensure victory and resolve on this holiest of nights at JCU. There were some surprising scores, "uplifting" performances from beginner players, and even a close call for one of our season vets, Captain Sperm himself, Christopher Ende. Let's get to it.
RedBalls vs Green Lanterns
Balls of Red 13 - 5
Fujin’s breath was ever increasing on this dark Wednesday night, bringing upward lifts and spiraling discs. This made everyone’s throws chaotically random, and sometimes beneficial for the RedBalls given the score and some outstanding defense from the Lanterns. Case in point, Jaime Broadbent’s basketball-like attitude of swatting the disc down from a sneaky pass. “Not in my house!”, she proclaimed. Both teams showed a varied set of knowledge in offensive and defensive tactics by applying the “zone”. Although confusing at first, both teams were able to apply short passes and patience in an effort to beat the eldest of the Shinto gods. The Green Lanterns showed their coveted and robust will power and strung up some continuation plays, but in the end costly mistakes near the opponent’s endzone provided the opening for the Redballs coke-fueled offensive might. A fantastic game was played from both sides, and kudos to Dehollander and A-O Suv for the coaching tips to the young beginners of the Lantern Corp. For those still scratching their head, Fujin is the Japanese Shinto God of Wind. History teachers FTW.
Lascivious Ladyfingers vs Tie Fast Dye Furious
Ladyboys 13 - 3
This Game started off with an easy upwind point by the sexy bananas. What was even more startling was Tie Dye’s surprisingly weird choice of setting up a stack against the upward forces, which obviously didn't work on Hugh’s zone defense and thus leaving “L” squared the ability to get off to a small lead. Rob Dehollander kept his naughty team demeanor in the deep position of the zone, dominating all of Zane's deep hucks to Finny on a long point. His indecent exposure of Tie Dye’s offense flaws brought down a reign of terror to those who chose to use the wind as their 8th player. Kayler and Janice of the yellow beauties earned their stripes by playing the wings in the zone, and the guys (Junki and Timo), kept a good eye out in the short deep position and really picked it up quickly when they were needed. Stefan went on a massive scoring run, getting to straight goals and then scoring the game winner to become the night's top scorer (previously held by Sanne and Timo). Overall, it was a good dominant performance from the Ladyfingers, but there are definitely some standouts on Finny’s Tie Dyed team. Amber played a great mark in the cup. Hugh will definitely be filled with concupiscent dreams of this victory.
Spastic Spunk vs Dark Matter
The Darkness 13-6
So what do you get when you have a solid, round, immovable object being bombarded by several high velocity penetration specialists? A lot of splatter! With zone being in play, it was always going to be a tough night for both teams with the extreme wind. Spastic Spunk got off to a very solid start by creating a tough defense that made things difficult for Dark Matter. The Spunk quickly went up 2-0, but the Black Hole combatants got it back to an even score. Point of the game, and the turning point, was the incredible defensive recoveries of the Darkness. The Spunk were up 4-3 and zoning hard in one corner of the Dark endzone. This caused the Matter to have about four or so turnovers, but the team stood solid and kept getting the disc back. Winning that point basically won them the game. They took half 7-4, and after that, they scored the next few points. Chris got injured at 9-4 and we heard he's doing ok! After Chris’ ride home (ambulance) picked him up and left, the Spunk got two points back. Dark Matter took the final four points to win it 13-6. Solid play by Dark Matter against the zone, looking forward to big things! This game truly had everything in it, some pre-game heckling, plenty of aerial contests, hot-short passes, turn overs, and some savage D from both teams. Be sure to bring a stretcher next if you run into Big Nicholas and his concrete frame. What matters? Apparently Dark matters, and I don’t see them losing anytime soon.
The Birds vs Clockwork Orange
Death From above takes it: 12-10
From the limited knowledge we know of this game (which was timed out) it can be said that the intensity was very “high”, to coin a bird-like phrase. Both teams (like everyone else) decided to run a standard zone strategy. Claire emerged as a gun in the cup with her agility and speed that is only rivaled to that of a peregrine falcon. Not much is known of the details in this game, which I blame on Clockwork’s ability to freeze time and focus our minds on the games happening near the forefront of the campus. Timmy Roland was able to help his team with his other hand. A real man practices with both and complains about neither. Yet, through his leadership and Carlos’ determination, the end result was time capped and the Birds flew away as the victors in a hard fought match.
On a side note: I hope you enjoyed the teaser trailer for the videos to come. The first part is complete so look for the link on the facebook page. Also, it is important to pay your league fees ASAP. Next Wednesday is the FINAL chance to get the earlier bird special of $50 ($40 for the fees, and 10 for the new disc). You may choose to pay for just the fees if you wish. After that, the fees go up to $50 and discs return to their normal price of $20. First team to get their funds in gets a prize. Last semester it was free pizza, which is good considering it costs an arm and a leg over here in OZ. I imagine the prize will be better this semester.
Yours in Frisbee and Fun,
