Introducing to you Audrey Siple, American Correspondent. Over the past few months I have roped Audrey in to write a little for the Townsville Ultimate Blog! I haven't yet seen anything produced but I can guarantee that is what the new year will bring.
Audrey was here in the second semester of 2008 along with close friend Christy "Balls" Johnston from the land of America. She is an American. Both these girls are what I would consider to have been some of the finest already-established female players we've had land on these Townsville shores. I mention Christy because it is likely that any article written by Audrey will be done under the influence of alcohol in the company of Balls. These girls played on Townsville's 2008 entry into Mixed Nationals Hand of God (HoG for short) and were a key part. She is also tied to Hamish Pope, former Townsville Ultimate President and local player for 4 years. He is currently staying with her in America, so expect these three to have their way with the blog.
Audrey is one of the best female players I've ever actually seen play. On a basic level I used her as a scrap collector, collecting many of my errant throws in those days on the red team with Simon...(name eludes me at the moment but one fine looking team), and many of the scars on her arms and legs can be attributed indirectly to me. Apart from the layout catches, she is a great middle player in the stack, always a workhorse, the first person to cut, and who some people look to when in trouble. She even taught me how to throw a high release poppy backhand in the days when I thought throwing was for chumps. I've also seen her sky some of the guys in Townsville (not cool), as well as outrun and catch over some of the male players of the Townsville league (poor bastards). Either we have too many chumps here (quite possible) or she's a strong player (equally plausible). The most important thing I learnt from watching her play though was just the timing on the cuts, never stopping and that having rapport with a player (Balls) can be a huge advantage.
Apart from the obvious skills at the game Audrey is probably one of the most absurd people I've had the pleasure of meeting, so hurry up and write something damnit! The first 2 or more conversations I had with her took place with both of us pretending to be someone else, the first one was a character who did not speak english using only the words "noo" and "si". I took me three conversations to realise that she was to be avoided. At one time when I was quite a mess she had me convinced that Hamish had gone missing and I apparently proceeded to search the house high and low in the hope of finding the poor boy, including under the kitchen sink. Luckily he was found to be safe. Not to mention the much acclaimed welcome/farewell dance that took place with her, Christy and myself.
I look forward to her articles on Hot Girls of Ultimate and one about Fancy Dress in Ultimate or anything else that might be on her mind, even if it is actually about playing ultimate such as Playing Ultimate in America.
Cheers Audrey,
The great thing is you can write whatever you want cause there's only about 3 people that read this! New part: And if you don't write anything I will hate you forever and recruit Balls instead cause she's better at Ultimate and parties anyway!
Hugh
