Welcome to the Jungle and the Best Semester of Your Life

Well I have to say I was taken back when the Frisbee gods asked me to join the blogging team. I will do my best to keep this short and sweet and leave you with some words of wisdom that hopefully brings energy and motivation to this semester. In the future I will help out with reviews of the games in action. Tonight's post will encompass a few facets of why joining the Ultimate Frisbee crew was the best decision of your life, and by the end of your reading I hope that you will do your best to be open, honest, care free, and down right extroverted to the max!

Before I go on we all need to again recognize the contributions the Board has made to make the season a success. 3 cheers for Hugh, Duncan, Finny, Zane, Ashley, Tim Roland for his "MONK" recruitment tactics, and a whole bunch of others who (as A-O Sullivan stated) "are the first to arrive and the last to leave".

For those who don't know me, let me fill you in in the simplest way I can. I joined this league during the first semester. I had no idea what I was getting into but rest assured, it was the best decision ever made. Why? Because it gave me the ability to meet everyone from across the globe, it allowed me to learn a fast and skillful game, and they took me in as family. Why would anyone not want to join this group? If you haven't seen me on campus or on Wednesdays it's because I was on practicum, teaching boarding school kids and having them laugh at my accent. I am a Canadian from the great province of Ontario. I play lacrosse, study education and hope to teach History and SOSE to these little Aussie brats for as long as I can. I was a member of the best looking frisbee team in the history of teams - THE BLACK PANTHERS! The rest you can find out on your own. I don't bite. I'm the tall, smiling, nice, funny, charming Canuck with bright tattoos. Enough about that, let me tell you what you are in for these next 4 months.

You are to expect the following: Raging parties, Facebook adds from many, nicknames being made, inside jokes being created, and bonds to last a lifetime. Other notable memories include (but are not limited to): death defying plays, a smile from ear to ear when you see Wednesday on the calendar, and one of the best games of the semester "AUSTRALIA vs. THE WORLD". All you Americans, Norwegians, Germans, French, Greek, and my fellow country men and women must all be there. I am tired of hearing the Green and Gold goat us and act the opposite of humble. Some notable memories for you all to laugh at and for some to remember:

1.) During a pool/bbq party a bat flew by and shit directly into Timmy's beer while he was actively swimming. I wish I was making this shit up but I'm not. That bat has the accuracy of a Apollo's arrows.

2.) A pub crawl where we saw more than one Superman, an interesting Hulk, a Robin Hood who dropped his bow and arrow in the Men's Stall (Ashley you pisstank lol), a Batman being asked to stop acting like he can fly from atop a bar table (know your role kiddo, Batman can't fly), a Thundercat (excellent choice in costume!), and the Red Guy from TRON...Larson your costume was EPIC!

3.) Some interesting team cheers that required the remembrance of a techno beat with Barbara Striesand, and a poetic masterpiece by Captain "Gibbo" - Creigan Gibson.

4.) An after frisbee game that required ninja focus and lightning reflexes...See Finny and David Dehollender for clarification.

5.) David's bold move of chugging Canadian Maple Syrup on Canada Day.

6.) Matt Pyne's ability to miss almost the entire season of frisbee with his Black Panther team. It's ok bud you'll always be a panther.

7.) Captain Gibbo's ability to wear one shirt every time he went out drinking. The infamous Striped Shirt

So to all of you fellow foreigners, Welcome to the Jungle! North Queensland is filled with excellent scenery, a beautiful beach, and every known poisonous organism ever known. WATCH OUT FOR DROPBEARS! But you are now part of the frisbee family, and oh how lucky you are. We will take care of you and make sure that you have the best time of your life. Life is simple. Live in the present moment, smile, realize that life has no ordinary moments. Happiness is not something to be attained in material fashion. It is a mindset. I guarantee that you will have that now that you are a part of this family.

Get ready, get set, get your f***ing game faces on! Townsville Ultimate Frisbee has commenced once more. Don't you dare hold back, and don't be the one to say: "If only I was more social, how much more fun would I have had." You get what you put into it.

Welcome to Mother Nature's Thunderdome...and congratulations on realizing this:

"Life is a book, and those who don't travel only read the first page."

And I'm going to say it again, seriously...be positive. There is no room for negativity here.

See you on the field of battle "With Faith and Honour held high!" -- It's a Black Panther thing

Sincerely yours,
The Man with the Dragon Tattoo

  4. Yeah we should have done much better lol. Would have loved to get to the grand final. At least we didn't have the wooden spoon. That's the issue with writing on the internet, sometimes sarcasm and simple, harmless jabs tend to be taken as literal fact.
