Yeah, I got drunk again. But this time I was given some information from your fearless frisbee leaders on how your games went. Hopefully I can give your excellent energy and enthusiasm the justice it deserves in the following summary of Wednesday, August 17th, 2011. Game on folks....here we go.
First on the docket:
RedBalls vs Clockwork Orange
13-9 for RedBalls
On Field #4, Matty's Redballs battled Clockwork Orange to decide who was the dominant “warm” colour of the spectrum. It was a riveting game that truly showed how beginner Frisbee is supposed to be played. Even in such a short time, these two teams came together and really started to jell. After an early lead Clockwork backed off the blistering pace to ensure that the new players received some disc time and could learn more about the game we all know and love. While Captain Timmy’s veterans tended to a stricken red player, Dave Dehollander snuck the Ballers into the lead and took the half. Red shot to 11 points after the break. However, using all the cogs in their vast machine, Clockwork orange grounded out a 5 point come back before Hannah 'Tigress' Karlson took the game point for the Reds. These are two very good teams to watch in the future, especially with Dehollander’s team making it to the finals last semester. And those clockwork fuckers are crazy, basing their name off of a deranged serial killer from Stanley Kubrick. Well done captains, because this game could have gone either way.
Dark Matter vs Lascivious LadyFingers
13-12 Dark Matter
Down 7-3 in the first half, the Darkness came back in the second. It was as if a black hole was sucking all of the discs into the hands of Luke’s deep cuts and Nick’s tireless defense. Point of the game went to Jamie-Lee and Brooke's back and forth momentum to each other from halfway to score. There was a good running match-up between Deanna (who is Townsville's amazing female player) and Sanne, who proved herself to be the Ladyfingers' scoring machine in last week's game. As it drew to a close we saw the score tied 12 all, and it was up to the coaching strategies of a sidelined James, A-O Suv, and Deanna Finn to find a winning throw. To be honest, when you have James “Air” David and Ashley taking the guys under their wings, and Dee leading her Femme Fatales, The Dark Matter are a definite team to watch out for. Don’t count out the LadyFingers. Captain Hugh leaps for those discs in a way that mimics the energy of a “lascivious” old man chasing after a sorority girl. And Robert Dehollander has some handling skills as well. Hugh, did you enjoy this “lavish” gesture of incorporating your team name to your skills? Seriously, watch out for this Luke character. Haven’t seen speed like that since last semester’s road runner, Danny Incontrera. How is it possible that Ashley gets the speedy ones?
Team Green vs The Pink Birds
13-3 - Birds
Both teams are a working title (at least the Green team is) so look for some improvement in next week’s blog. Tonight’s matchup proved to be the very essence of what Ultimate Frisbee really is. It was an incredible social experience with a tonne of new players basically being thrown onto one single team with a few vets and thus learning the fine points of the game. There was comradery, respect of each teammate on both teams, positive feedback, and motivation. That’s what it’s all about. And everyone played their hearts out. The girls of the green team have shown excellent stamina and determination for the disc. Big ups to Sophie for getting open and scoring a point, Ricky, for handling the whole game, and Larson for helping out in the first half. I see an immense amount of improvement to come, especially with Mitch’s general manager skills and trade negotiations. The Birds were dominated by Dane West with his acrobatic leaps and defensive maneuvers, Creigan Gibson’s handling skills, and Captain Damon’s leadership. The Green team has done some major restructuring so do not count them out when you see them on the schedule.
Spastic Spunk vs Tie-Dye
13-7 - Tie-Dye
The Spastic Spunk and the Tie Dye's dived straight into their game and began to tear the pants off each other. Both sides traded points and felt each other up on what can be seen as the definition of defense. Eventually the Tie Dyes found their mojo and created some much needed breathing room. In the end the Spastic Spunk's were left chasing their tails. It was a hard fought game with lots of movement around the field to all players on each team. Kudos to all that played! It should also be noted that the Spunk have what seems to be a very aggressive, competitive, energetic and diabolical female player. I think her name is Amy. Don’t be surprised if she starts scoring up a storm. The “ultimate” force is strong with that one. And I know I'm still kind of new to the family, but does Finny always choose Tie Dye? Is there some hidden joke I still don't know about? Spunk players keep notice, Captain Christopher has already changed his Facebook picture to a sperm with sunglasses. Expect some t-shirts made in the future.
So that's what happened this past week. To all of the new recruits, I can tell you that it only gets better. Day and night, it get's better and better, till you wish that every day was Wednesday. The days fly by and every hour that passes brings you closer to the action. It's a fun and harrowing feeling that rises up like a storm until the sound of thunder echoes in your mind. Its origin is not from the mind, rather, the thunder comes from your energy on that field. It resides in your ability to make the most of your time in Oz and it puts a fire in your soul that breeds and lives on positivity. This energy echoes to everyone outside of the AFL fields and lets them know what they're missing.
I hope you all had as much fun as I did, and I hope you are all eagerly awaiting next Wednesday and the pub crawl to follow.
Yours truly,
The Man with the Dragon Tattoo
