The Townsville Villains' Royal Rivalry - Ultimate Frisbee Tournament

The interest in the tournament continues to grow and all our organisation appears to be coming together for a great event!

As it says on the flyer we need you to sign-up for this tournament and to do that visit www.AFDA.com and become a member by clicking JOIN. After that go to Tournaments and Register for the Townsville Villains' Royal Rivalry! There are two reasons to do this: 1. This membership will cover you for insurance at the event which is required, and 2. We can see who's playing so that enough food can be bought! It also helps us to organise teams!

One thing that wasn't mentioned was how to find the FACEBOOK event for more up to date details and discussion! Search for The Townsville Villains' Royal Rivalry - Ultimate Frisbee Tournament in the search bar and if that doesn't work, go to your friend's page and see if you can find it that way!

The tournament will be a great social event and will offer everyone a chance to meet up and play! Besides, if you don't play what will your excuse be for joining us in the River the next day for the Recovery Floating Party?

Thanks!!!

Week 7 Results

Finally, the end of Round Robins... As you can see from the standings below, the teams are still very even across the board and even 7 games cannot separate a few teams. As the teams are laid out, we can see a few surprises and a few predictions going to plan. However, with the finals coming up each game will be sudden death for most teams.

The first game that kicked off the final game of Round Robins was Blue Sharks and Mad Hatters. The Blue Sharks got off to good start taking out the half 7-5. But the determination (and help of Matt Boevink) in the Mad Hatters kept them going, and they couldn’t be denied their first victory of the season. A great win by the Mad Hatters over the Blue Sharks in Universal point 13-12.

The undefeated Tie Dye Hards took on team Yellow Snow (Plus team plus one) in a game for the ages. With Finny’s winning streak the envy of the Townsville Ultimate Frisbee community Simon was keen to put it to an end. However, Cooper and Lisa’s handling threw an aerial raid and kept them in the contest all the way to the end. But it was no match for Shelby and team plus one, taking out the victory 13-11. Leaving Simon once again going home with a win. Yellow Snow ending the undefeated streak of Tie Dye Hards 13-11.

The Ogres took on AKITD, after the Ogres lost last week they were keen for redemption against AKITD and that’s what they did. The Ogres shut out AKITD allowing them no possession throughout the game. After a mammoth amount of momentum, not even the partnership of Hugh and Amy could refuse the Ogres the victory. The Ogres up 13-6.

In the final game, the Rojo Raptures faced the Purple Cobras. The Purple Cobras got off to a great start and were looking to close this one quickly. However, the switch to Tim and Tom handling and Mike in the back proved to be more effective in offence as the Rojo Raptures mounted an epic fight back. Rojo Raptures over the Purple Cobras 13-10.

As we head into the finals, it is recommended that each team turns up early and gets throws in and warms up. Each team are now aware of every player in their team and their capabilities and it will be great to see which team can handle the pressure. However, it is also important as we head into the more important games of the season that the spirit of the game does not disappear. Though games might mean more, if the fun and spirit is lost, then there is no point in winning. Always remember, that at the end of the season, it is not the amount of points scored in each game we remember, but the friendships and memories we made along the way.

Don’t forget that Frisbee is still on next Wednesday during lecture recess and to bring a light and a dark!

Happy Throwing!

The Townsville Villain.

Week 7 Previews

In the first match the Rojo Raptures will be coming up against the Purple Cobras. After a decisive display from the Rojo Raptures in the previous week over the Blue Sharks, the Raptures will be looking to keep the momentum going come finals series. But the Cobras are proving to be a handful as they are reaching their potential in the important ends of the season. Will be an interesting match.

AKITD will be staring down the Ogres after both teams lost both previous matches 13-8 ironically. Both teams have been struggling to find consistency throughout matches as both are known to ‘slack-off’ during the late parts of the games, this game will come down to possession and handling.

Blue Sharks will come up against the Mad Hatters. The Mad Hatters although yet to win a match are ripening for the tail end of the season, as they came oh so close to clinching their first win. The Mad Hatters will be looking to a fully fit team with Bobby Jackson from America and Cowgirl Samantha Morgan both named in the starting line-up. The Sharks will be looking to get a good start and continue out with the rhythm throughout the game. Will be a great match to watch and will come down to defence on both teams.

Finally, team Yellow Snow have looked to be the team to look out for as their ‘under the radar’ tactics are finally getting attention. Tie Dye Hards are looking to finish the round robin undefeated as they are 6 on the trot. However, if any team is to stop the glory run of Captain Finny, it will be team Yellow Snow as Shelby poses a serious threat in the air against the freak. The game will come down to solid grit and commitment.

Will be looking forward to watching these matches!

TownsVillains Mixed Nats Team Barbecue!

The TownsVillains Mixed Nats Team is holding a barbecue for your drunk-feasting pleasure! This Friday night at the Uni Club will be our first barbecue. Friday night is "Bludgers" which starts off when people knock off uni and finishes when they all get too drunk and go somewhere else. We will be there from about 8:30pm onwards but feel free to quench your thirst and develop a healthy appetite before then and just head there straight after uni! This will be a great night to finally socialise with that sexy guy from that team that beat you (his name is Simon by the way, and he's been snatching all your people up, so you need to hide your kids, hide your wife, and hide your husband cause he's raping errbody out there!). No but seriously, let's do it.

Come to the back gate. There is an entry fee on this night (there's gonna be some live music) but if you can come to the back gate and accumulate, the manager has agreed to open it up every n0w and then and let ultimate frisbee people in!!! Be sure to reward yourselves for this saving on the entry fee by drinking an extra jug or two.

This Friday night (17th of Sep) at 8ish, Uni Club Bludgers! Be there!

Week 6 Results

In what seemed to be a turn around, it was discussed that zone would no longer be played on Wednesday night league nights before play. It was up to the captains to determine what type of defence and offence would best suit their style of play. After a ladder was put up last week, it showed how tight the teams all were and proved how vital every win was. However, each win should not come at the cost of losing team spirit.

The Purple Cobras took on the Mad Hatters in a match to last the ages. With the return of Bobby Jackson, the Mad Hatters looked promising and did not let down. Several longs plays saw the game on Universal point with nothing separating the teams after 24 points. However, it was the Purple Cobras who came away with the win in a close finish, 13-12. With Mad Hatters chasing a long awaited victory, their team is looking to ripen with potential just in time for finals. Look out!

In the second game, the Rojo Raptures took on the Blue Sharks. In a stunning turn of events, in point 3, Captain America had to leave the field through injury, leaving Team Plus 1, to replace him. With Simon’s pinpoint throws, he dominated possession and took over the game, allowing no breathing space for the Sharks to work with. Rojo Raptures with a decisive victory 13-7.

Team Yellow Snow were looking to get a solid win on the board and cement themselves in third spot. This week they faced a Knife in the Dark and their task was always going to be challenging. Foot blocks aplenty, the game was a thriller and it was great to see two of the games high flyers in Hugh and Shelby match it with each other. A close game with some great highlights, Yellow Snow takes out the win 13-8.

In the final game the Ogres took on the undefeated Tie Die Hards. After a continuous roll of wins, the Tie Die Hards were rolling off confidence galore as someone is yet to stand in between Captain Finny and the coveted League Cup. In what looked to be an easy decisive win to the Tie Die Hards, the Ogres mounted a mini comeback in the second half and nearly pulled of the win. However, it was the Tie Die Hards who finished strong and brought it home 13-8.

With only one more week of round robin, each team must cement their place as high as they can on the ladder to ensure a good finals run. It is imperative to ensure that all players turn up to games, as substitutions will be crucial. As we face the home straight, we must ask ourselves...

Will Finny and the Tie Die Hards make it all the way to the coveted cup? Or will their Dream run end just short...
Will the Mad Hatters finally reach their potential in time for the finals?
Will the Purple Cobras start their dominance over a great win this week?
Will the Rojo Raptures ensure the fitness of their captain before finals and continue on their run?
Will the Blue Sharks finally taste glory after 2 seasons?
Will Hugh lead a Knife in the Dark on the road to the Holy Grail?
Will team Yellow Snow benefit from the American imports they purchased at the start of the season?
Or will the Ogres finally string some wins together and become a dominant force in the league...

All these questions will be answered come finals time, and the league is looking to be hotting up. I can’t wait for finals!

The Townsville Villains' Royal Rivalry TOURNAMENT!!!

Spread the word! We're set up for a great tournament right here in Townsville at the start of October for all our frisbee fanatics! Held at Queens Park in the city, not far from the beach it's gonna be fun!!!

The format will be a King and Queen hat tournament - which means there'll ideally be one male and one female winner at the end of the day! It also means you will get to play with a lot of different people which equals a lot of fun! The way this format works is teams are drawn from a hat for each game. Each game you will be on a different team to the last and every win you get will be a point towards your name! The person with the most points at the end of the day wins!

The date is set as Saturday the 9th of October, which is the weekend after lecture recess has ended. It will be an all day tournament with lunch provided. There will be great PRIZES for the King and Queen winners at the end of the day, as well as other prizes for small events during the day. This will be the best tournament that Townsville has ever had!

The following day, Sunday, will be an "Unofficial" Recovery Floating Party at Ross River!!! Many of you now know what THAT's all about!!! I look forward to it!

AN OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT WILL BE MADE TO YOU at League, but if you're keen to get started read on:

Step 1: If you know you're really keen, register for the tournament by first joining AFDA to get a membership number. Fill out this registration.

Week 5 Results

Wow, what a week it has been. Week 5 has brought some of the best Ultimate we have witnessed so far. As each team has progressed, we can start to see how each team plays, their strengths and weaknesses and who their strike players are. After very close games in week 4, Week 5 was looking to be a good one and it did not disappoint. Please note: MVP’s will be kept secret as only I will know.

The Rojo Raptures took on the Mad Hatters in what looked to be a very tight game at the start. With the Mad Hatters not only playing savage, but with a man down as well, their team of 6 was actually leading. However, only time told as they looked to tire down and slip in the second half, with Dave’s team leaving wondering what could’ve been. Though the Mad Hatters should have their heads held high as the return of Bobby Jackson and Ellie Heywood will be in force as of next Wednesday. Look forward to seeing that! Rojo Raptures pull off the great escape, up 13-10.

In the second game, the Blue Sharks were keen to get two wins on the board as they focused on speed to try and work around the unusually tall team of the “lenken” Purple Cobras. With a very quick first half, it was hard to separate both teams, however it was Blue Sharks who came away with the victory by implementing a Zone Force in the second half. The Blue Sharks on two straight wins, up 13-6.

A Knife in the dark were looking to end the Tie Dye Hards unbeaten streak with the duo of Hugh and Aaron, however even with Simon playing it wasn’t to be. The Tie Dye Hards looked sensational and the game turned out to be a cracker. As the Townsville Villain predicted, Universal point it was, with the Tie Dye Hards taking it out, 13-12 in a thriller.

Lastly, the Ogres were looking for revenge against Yellow Snow. With Duncan incredibly tall as usual, the Ogres were keen for some action. However, with Paula out Yellow Snow fell behind in the first half. After a courageous effort by Shelby and a game winning catch by Rob Edmonds, Yellow Snow completed the second half comeback leaving the Ogres wondering “Maybe we need more than matching shirts...” Yellow Snow winners 13-9.

After what was a crazy week on the field, the attention will turn to next weeks games. Being Week 6 next week, there will only be two more games until finals time. This is where all the teams will fine tune their offence and defence as they will be looking to get the best combinations down for their team in order to bring the best for the finals. I wish all the teams the best of luck and how to see you on the field next week, exams or not!

The Townsville Villain.

*Please note: To all captains, MVP’s after games to remain secret and to inform James at the end of each game along with score.

Round 5 Preview...

The match ups for Round 5 are as follows:

Field 1:
Rojo Raptures v Mad Hatters

Good strong game, will come down to possession and handling. The trick to this contest is making sure Bob’s throws are accurate and the return of Bobby Jackson is waiting. With Ellie running around, the Mad Hatters might be on target for an upset if they are up to the task.

Field 2:
Purple Cobras v Blue Sharks

This game will come down to sheer speed and agility. With the likes of Dane West and Peter Roach on the same field, grass is bound to be torn up. Will be interesting to see how each team plays their offence and defence. Will be worth watching.

Field 3:
A Knife in the Dark v Tie Dye Hards

The Tie Dye Hards are coming into this contest as heavy favourites as they are the only undefeated team in the competition. With the aerial capabilities of both captains, the game will come down to handling abilities and being able to spot the right pass at the right time. Will be a great match up.

Field 4:
Ogres v Yellow Snow

With team Yellow Snow heavily developing and keen to get revenge from a half time slump from the previous week, their players will be looking to “carve up” (for you Paula) on the Frisbee field. However, with the Ogres on a little bit of a roll, they will be keen to get another win on their belt. They will not let slide easily. This game will simply come down to who wants it more. Good old fashion grit and determination.

Round 4 Results

Round 4 saw the continuation of the round robin matches as we were to decide whether the Tie Dye Hards were going to continue on their undefeated streak or if the Mad Hatters were going to win a game...

The games started of with the Blue Sharks taking on Yellow Snow. With Yellow Snow taking the half 7-5 fairly convincingly and Zane getting injured, the Sharks knew that had to work something out. With James returning from injury, he grabbed a quick fire 7 points over Deanna’s 3 and turned the game up-side down. Sharks taking the victory an 8-1 point turn around. 13-8.

Blue Sharks MVP
Peter & Deanna

Yellow Snow MVP
Shelby & Paula

A Knife in the dark took on Rojo Raptures on field 1 as the best in the sky came together. With Hugh and Mike’s aerial battles, it was hard to see what was going on. However it was Rojo Raptures who came out on top 13-7.

Rojo Raptures MVP
Nick P & Eilidah

AKITD MVP
Hugh & Amy

The Tie Dye Hard went up against the Mad Hatters, and it was the undefeated versus the defeated. As Bob tried incredibly hard to end the streak, it was to no avail as the Tie Die Hards strangled them to defeat. Tie Dye Hards remaining undefeated with a convincing 13-6 win.

Tie Dye Hards MVP
Finny & Lisa

Mad Hatters
Matt & Ellie

Finally, the Purple Cobras took on the Ogres. With the Ogres taking control of the game early, the Purple Cobras found it hard to keep up. However, with Sam Jones playing hard, it was always going to be a long contest. Ogres up 13-5

Purple Cobras MVP
JC & Sam Jones

Ogres MVP
Carlos & Echo

After this week, MVP’s will know be unknown with the exception of The Townsville Villain, as the awards will be unknown until finals night. Be sure to be there!

A link to the rules and some cool diagrams which make you feel smart

Once again, it's always useful to point out that Ultimate is self-refereed. You are a referee (yeah Finny you're not the only one who's special). So that means, like Finny attends all his state basketball competitions and sucks up to the big bosses by being so smart, you too must try to be as smart and knowledgeable as you can be - BY KNOWING THE RULES. Sure it's really helpful in a game if you're good at getting your way and winning arguments, this is great, as long as it's done within the rules and guided by your fair intentions which can be found here: http://ultimaterules.co.cc/?page_id=1535

Also, there's plenty of other things to look at while you're on the WFDF webpage, such as this diagram explaining the pull. Pretty cool and very easy to use! There are a number of other diagrams explaining the processes behind picks, travels, and different fouls and infractions.
