Competitions
There are many different types of tournaments. Varying number of days, beach or grass, fun, State level, National level, International, Mixed, Open's, Women's, Hat tournaments (team is picked out of a hat for duration), King and Queen Hat tournaments (individual plays on newly created teams each game), party based tournaments, "boutique" party based tournaments aka. Byron Badman's Birthday Bash in Nov.? etc etc. the list goes on!
Many non-serious competitions will usually offer a pick-up team or can slot you onto a team IF you aren't up for organising a group of 10 - 20 people to attend with you. Or with Hat tournaments, the object is not to have a team to begin with and to play with many new players, often with Worlds level players alongside you (eg. Melbourne Hat). If you know enough people from other towns and cities who want you on their team you can maybe even start doing this for more serious comps. But whatever you do, don't miss out because you don't have a team, because that's not an excuse.
Now having said this, Halibut is coming up. Halibut is the best regular Queensland Mixed Tournament and usually runs out of Brisbane around the end of July (my Birthday), though this time the beginning of August. This time Stef Rappazzo the Mayor of Slamtown, is hosting the tournament in the Gold Coast. Last year he was Tournament Director of this event and it was a beautiful affair with creative new additions from previous years including the addition of much needed new shorts, Halibut shorts. This time around it will probably be even better as he's running it from home. I believe it'll be a weekend after uni semester 2 has kicked off, but very close to the start.

So now that you know, start talking amongst your mates, see who wants to go, whether you want to go as a team or pick up on a team and learn from some new people or whatever. Pick a few other comps for later on! Melbourne Hat I would highly recommend, except it's fucking cold and wet there, but those problems can be counteracted somehow which I haven't yet figured out. Usually the limiting factor in Townsville for team formation is girls so find as many of them as you can who'll be here in August and take them to beach for a throw. Pretend it's for social reasons, but really keep that underly focus inside your head of improving their throwing technique and layout abilities so that they can be Halibut ready by August (no sexism intended). If you need extras start talking to players from the host city, usually there are people who miss out and don't get on a team...you might have to cause...shotgun, Sarah and Dee and Sam already. Anyone I missed, shotgun.
Lastly, Townsville usually gets an automatic spot for Mixed Nationals which is held in October in Melbourne this year. With the majority of Townsville's players having only just tasted tournament level ultimate at Regionals here this year, the extra experience of more tournaments is necessary to prepare you to tackle the bigger, longer, tougher ones so that you can contribute more and more to the team. Whether that experience provides a physical test of your abilities, mental strengthening, or makes you more aware of areas you can improve or are good at before next time, then it is well worth investing in to make that progression up through the ranks and to help develop Townsville Ultimate by upping your own skill level! Get your arse to some more tournaments already! What are you waiting for! Visit www.afda.com

Finally.....league is back!
Game 1
Disc Jockeys vs Ginger Ninjas
In what was to be the battle of the cellar dwellers, both of these teams came out on the field with something to prove. With injury/illness doubts over the fearless leadership of both Matty Hamilton and Ashley O’Sullivan, it was sure to be a tight contest. However, the Ninjas came out very strong and never looked back! Withstanding a couple of onslaughts by the never say die Disc Jockeys, the Ninjas ended up taking this one comfortably.
Final Score: Ginger Ninjas 10 d. Disc Jockeys 1
Tie-Dye Another Day vs White Savages
Finally having a chance to use their newly made (and might I say, pretty fancy looking) jerseys, the Tye-Dyes were hoping that this would take them to victory. Unfortunately for this band of rainbow coloured players lead by Finny, the White Savages had other ideas. The Savages through smart throws, cuts and I’m sure a little bit of afro magic, ended up with the win.
Final Score: White Savages 10 d. Tie-Dye Another Day 2
Black Panthers vs Green Machine
A game that pitted former team mates Duncan “Midget” Webley and Gibbo as opposite captains was sure to a fiery encounter. With the return of James “Pinky” David to whichever team needed more subs, it was sure to be a close encounter. After a number of comebacks and surges by both teams throughout the game, the influence of James and super-sub Rob Edmond was the difference and the Green Machine powered home to victory.
Final Score: Green Machine 8 d. Black Panthers 5
Tytans vs Albino Rhinos
Having already sealed more wins in two games than in his whole last season, it looks as if the Tytans and Dave DeHollander are the goods this season. However, the clearly colour-confused Rhinos were hoping to put a stop to this. With Carlos looking as dominant as his namesake Fidel in offense, the Rhinos were powerless even with the best effort of ET “Phone Home” Hine.
Final Score: Tytans 10 d. Albino Rhinos 2
Hyper-Masculine Feminists vs Lairy Canaries
Just about the most hotly contested 60 minutes of Ultimate you will see pitted the Canaries against the Feminists. The HMF were strengthened by the return of Simon “Team +1” Urquhart after his tour of countless licensed venues overseas. Either someone forgot to tell these teams that scoring points is how you win, or some of the best defensive efforts in Townsville Ultimate were put on show in this game! Either way, it made for some great entertainment.
Final Score: Hyper-Masculine Feminists 6 drew with Lairy Canaries 6
Game 2
Disc Jockeys vs Tie-Dye Another Day
With both teams suffering heavy defeats in the first game of the night, I’m sure both of them were looking to turn the tide. With Nic Pattillo strengthening the undermanned Jockeys and Megan Lundin on fire in offense, they looked for their first victory of the season. In a close encounter and solid showing by both teams, the Jockeys took the win over a Tie-Dye team that may be partially blinded by the brightness of their shirts. Good showing by Mollando Bloom who scored a point!
Final Score: Disc Jockeys 8 d. Tie-Dye Another Day 6
Ginger Ninjas vs. Green Machine
After falling before the line in a couple of games, the Ninjas looked to keep their winning ways going against the Green Machine and their solid offensive assembly. For two very attacking teams, this turned in to a game of defense and patience for both teams. After losing Hannah at half time (who unlike Hugh Osborn, hasn’t figured out that ultimate is more important than uni), the Ninjas were reduced to 6. With this advantage in players, the Green Machine and offensive weapon Jen Newton piled on the pressure, but the Ninjas held strong to take the win in a great game.
Final Score: Ginger Ninjas 7 d. Green Machine 6
White Savages vs Tytans
Two teams in great form faced off in this top of the table clash that can only be described as “white versus basically white”. With the Savages threatening the whole time with a zone defense, and Damon Scott always a danger in offense it looked a tough task for the Tytans to keep their unbeaten streak alive. In a game that I’m told was much closer than the score line reflects seemed to come down the clutch finishing of the Tytans, in particular that of JT and the ever reliable Sammy J. Tytans took the win and kept their streak alive!
Final Score: Tytans 10 d. White Savages 3
Black Panthers vs Lairy Canaries
There is one thing Hugh Osborn likes less than losing: tying. In this game versus the never-ending bench of the Panthers, it looked like a chance for Mr. Ultimate and his Canaries to get one back. However, with James and Peter renewing their Blue Sharks days on the Panthers team, this turned out to be a tough assignment. With the engaged/doctor/all round great guy Peter putting on a Frisbee clinic, the Panthers held off the Canaries and the best efforts of Stephen Wyka and his magic headband.
Final Score: Black Panthers 8 d. Lairy Canaries 7
Hyper-Masculine Feminists vs Albino Rhinos
In another game for the colour blind, the red HMF took on the pink Rhinos. Undefeated to this point, yet somehow not on the top of the table, the Larson show hoped to carry on against the deepest cutter of them all, Rhinos captain Chris Ende. With star players Bevo and Ray Brigade on fire as usual, it looked to be one for all the feminists out there to celebrate. Although Godfrey did his best to distract the HMF with his ridiculously pink clothes, it was the Feminists who took it out.
Final Score: Hyper-Masculine Feminists 8 d. Albino Rhinos 1
Well that’s about it from me, with so many games going on during one night, I apologise for the Hugh Osborn-like essay of games descriptions! Until next week, happy throwing!

The Rain is Gone, So We Play On!!
Hey All :D,
At last the sun has come out and dried out our fields and we are good to go this Wednesday night.
As briefly mentioned last Wednesday night, this week and next weeks games will involve 2 x 75min time-capped games (or first to 10 points) in order to catch up with the league games missed.
I understand that this may seem like more work and fatigue players but when you consider most games we normally play don't finish till 930 or 10 this is pretty much the same in length of playing time.
We need everyone to be down at the fields by 7pm if not earlier so the games can start on time and not go too late.
The fees will stay at $40 for this semester, they will not go up and the prize of a pizza party is still in place for the first team to have all its players fees paid for.
The draw for this week is:
Round 1 (7.15pm to 8.30pm)
Field 1 - Disc Jockeys v Ginger Ninjas
Field 2 - Tye-Dye Another Day v White Savages
Field 3 - Black Panthers v Green Machine
Field 4 - Tytans v Albino Rhinos
Field 5 - Hyper-Masculine Feminists v Lairy Canaries
Round 2 (8.30pm to 945pm)
Field 1 - Disc Jockeys v Tye-Dye Another Day
Field 2 - Ginger Ninjas v Green Machine
Field 3 - White Savages v Tytans
Field 4 - Black Panthers v Lairy Canaries
Field 5 - Albino Rhinos v Hyper-Masculine Feminists
I know this semester has been a tough one because of the shitty weather but all looks good to round the remainder of the semester off with a bang and I encourage you all to foster your people to play this semester through and to have a fun time doing so.
Lots of Love,
